A modal method is presented for the investigation of the effects of measurement errors in damage detection for dynamic structural systems. The structural modifications to the baseline system result in the response changes of the perturbed structure, which are measured to determine a unique system in the inverse problem of damage detection. If the numerical modal data are exact, mathematical programming techniques can be applied to obtain the accurate structural changes. In practice, however, the associated measurement errors are unavoidable, to some extent, and cause significant deviations from the correct perturbed system because of the intrinsic instability of eigenvalue problem. Hence, a self-equilibrating inverse system is allowed to drift in the close neighborhood of the measured data. A numerical example shows that iterative procedures can be used to search for the damaged structural elements. A small set of selected degrees of freedom is employed for practical applicability and computational efficiency.

This study focused on the design of the reflecting layer of a light trapping system fora thin film solar cell using topology optimization based on the phase field method. Therefore, incident light was caused to propagate in the desired direction by reflecting it from this layer, which is the design domain. The same method was applied to the conceptual design of an infrared stealth structure in near infrared range. The results using the phase field method were compared with those using the density method. The design objective was to maximize the Poynting vector value representing the energy flux, which was measured in a measuring domain to control the reflected wave direction. A finite element analysis and optimization process were performed using the commercial package COMSOL combined with the MATLAB programming.

In the present work, isogeometric analysis in linear elasticity problem is conducted using the basis functions from NURBS. The objectives of isogeometric analysis introduced is to integrate both geometric modeling(CAD) and computational analysis(CAE), and this can be accomplished from direct usage of geometric modeling by NURBS as the computational mesh. The merit of the isogeometry analysis is that NURBS surface are able to represent exact geometry from the control points and knot vectors, and also subsequent refinement is relatively simple relatively. In order to verify the computer codes developed in this study, it has been applied to two structural models of which geometry are simple ; 1) circular cylinder subjected to the constant internal pressure loading, 2) square plate with circular hole at center subjected to uniform tension. The exact solutions of these two models are available. Convergence of the approximate solutions by the present code for the isogeometry analysis are investigated by mesh refinement with inserting knots (h-refinement) and by mesh refinement with order elevation of the basis functions (p-refinement).

In this paper, infrared reflector design targeting infrared stealth effect is presented using structural optimization based on the phase field method. The analysis model was determined to accomplish the design that an incident infrared wave was reflected to a desired direction. The design process was to maximize the objective value at the measuring domain located in a target region and the design objective was set to the Poynting vector value which represents the energy flux. Optimization results were obtained according to the variation of some parameter values related to the phase field method. The model with a maximum objective value was selected as the final optimal model. The optimal model was modified to eliminate the gray scale using the cut-off method and it confirmed improved performance. In addition, to check the desired effect in the middle wave infrared range(MWIR), the analysis was performed by changing the input wavelength. The finite element analysis and optimization process were performed by using the commercial package COMSOL combined with the Matlab programming.

In this study, the reduced system for the dynamic analysis is proposed and the selection criterion of the primary degrees of freedom is presented considering the relation between natural frequency and external loading frequency. A well-constructed reduced system can assure the accurate representation of the dynamic behavior under arbitrary dynamic loads. For selecting the primary degrees of freedom of the reduced system, we employ the robust two-level condensation scheme of which the reliability has been proven through previous study. In the numerical examples, the reliability of the dynamic analysis based on the reduced system is demonstrated through comparing with those of global system.

Finite element analysis of fluid flow with moving free surface has been carried out in two and tree dimensions. The new VOF-based numerical algorithm that has been proposed by the present authors was applied to several 2-D and 3-D free surface flow problems. The proposed free surface tracking scheme is based on two numerical tools that have been newly introduced by the present authots; the orientation vector to represent the free surface orientation in each cell and the baby-cell to determine the fluid volume flux at each cell boundary. The proposed numerical algorithm has been applied to 2-D and 3-D cavity filling and sloshing problems, which demonstrated versatility and effectiveness of the new free surface tracking scheme as well as the overall solution procedure. The proposed numerical algorithm resolved successfully the interacting free surface with each other. The simulated results demonstrated the applicability of proposed numerical algorithm to the practical problems of large free surface motion. Also, it has been demonstrated that the proposed free surface tracking scheme can be easily implemented in any irregular non-uniform grid systems and can be extended to the 3-D free surface flow problem without additional efforts.

Numerical simulation of fluid flow with moving free surface has been carried out. For the free surface flow, a VOF(Volume of Fluid)-based algorithm utilizing a fixed grid system has been investigated. In order to reduce numerical smearing at the free surface represented on a fixed grid system, a new free surface tracking algorithm based on the donor-acceptor scheme has been presented. Novel features of the proposed algorithm are characterized as two numerical tools; the orientation vector to represent the free surface orientation in each cell and the baby-cell to determine the fluid volume flux at each cell boundary. The proposed algorithm can be easily implemented in any irregular non-uniform grid systems that are usual in finite element method (FEM). Moreover, the proposed algorithm can be extended and applied to the 3-D free surface flow problem without additional efforts. For computation of unsteady incompressible flow, a finite element approximation based on the explicit fractional step method has been adopted. In addition, the SUPG(streamline upwind/Petrov-Galerkin) method has been implemented to deal with convection dominated flows. Combination of the proposed free surface tracking scheme and explicit fractional step formulation resulted in an efficient solution algorithm. Validity of the present solution algorithm was demonstrated from its application to the broken dam and the solitary wave propagation problems.

Using an isogeometric approach, a continuum-based shape design optimization method is developed for steady state power flow problems at high frequencies. In case the isogeometric method is employed to the shape design optimization, the NURBS basis functions used in CAD geometric modeling are directly utilized to embed the exact geometry into the computational framework so that the design parameterization for shape optimization is much easier than that in the finite element method and consequently provides the enhanced smoothness of design perturbations. Thus, exact geometric models can be used in both the response and the shape sensitivity analyses, where normal vector and curvature are continuous over the whole design space so that enhanced shape sensitivity can be expected. Through numerical examples, the developed isogeometric sensitivity is compared with finite difference one to provide excellent agreement. Also, it turns out that the proposed method works very well in the shape optimization problems.

The structures, which are made up with the huge number of degrees-of-freedom and the assembly of substructures, have a great complexity. In order to increase the computational efficiency, the analysis models have to be simplified. Many substructuring techniques have been developed to simplify large-scale engineering problems. The techniques are very powerful for solving nonlinear problems which require many iterative calculations. In this paper, a modal derivatives-based model order reduction method, which is able to capture the stretching-bending coupling behavior in geometrically nonlinear systems, is adopted and investigated for its performance evaluation. The quadratic terms in nonlinear beam theory, such as Green-Lagrange strains, can be explained by the modal derivatives. They can be obtained by taking the modal directional derivatives of eigenmodes and form the second order terms of modal reduction basis. The method proposed is then applied to a co-rotational finite element formulation that is well-suited for geometrically nonlinear problems. Numerical results reveal that the end-shortening effect is very important, in which a conventional modal reduction method does not work unless the full model is used. It is demonstrated that the modal derivative approach yields the best compromised result and is very promising for substructuring large-scale geometrically nonlinear problems.

It was used boundary element method(BEM) and analysed axisymmetric problem to solve hydraulic cylinder for large vessel acting uniform internal pressure(25N/m super(2)) within elastic limit. This paper was utilized the carbon steel tubes for machine structural purposed model, inner radius was 150mm and outer radius was 250mm, axial length was semi-infinite and the isoparametric element was used. The important results obtained in this study were summarized as follows. Radial, tangential and shearing stress occured the maximum stresses(48, -20 and 34MPa) at the inner radius and the minimum stresses(32, -4 and 18MPa) at the outer radius of the hydraulic cylinder for large vessel. But negative signs have meaning compressive stress and stress diminution ratio was about 0.15MPa/mm. The use of isoparametric element raised accuracy and the increment of input data lessened the error in internal point but computer run-time was increased. The double node was improved the internal solutions to settle discontinuity at corner and the double exponential formula lessened error of stress value at boundary neighborhood. And then coincidence between the analytical and exact results is found to be fairly good, showing that the proposed analytical by BEM is reliable.
