  • This study was conducted to determine the PSL and TL properties of foods irradiated with electron beam and gamma-ray. 5 kinds of food including cereal, pulse, fish powder, dried vegetable and tea were irradiated at 0 to 10 kGy by electron beam accelerator or $^{60}Co$ gamma-ray irradiator. The PSL analysis showed negative results for most of the non-irradiated samples. Non-irradiated shrimp powder showed intermediate result. Irradiated samples gave negative or intermediate or positive value which presented the limitation of PSL technique. In TL analysis, there were TL glow curves at around $300^{\circ}C$ with low intensity on non-irradiated samples. Maximum peak in the range of $150-250^{\circ}C$ was appeared on irradiated samples. TL ratio obtained by re-irradiation with 1 kGy was less than 0.1 on non-irradiated samples and higher than 0.1 on irradiated samples. Therefore, in PSL measurement, electron-beam irradiated samples could obtain more clear results. TL analysis showed obvious difference between non-irradiated and irradiated samples. But the identification was impossible for the sample of rice and lemon tea. Because of it's low contents of mineral.

  • Background: The pathogenesis of silicosis has been focused on the interaction between alveolar macrophages and silica particle. Although fibrosis in silicosis has been studied extensively, the mechanism is still not fully understood. There is increasing evidence that monokines and arachidonic acid metabolites macrophage are involved in pathogenesis of silicosis. Recently, it was reported that prostaglandin E2 produced from macrophage counteracts the stimulatory effects of other monokines on fibroblast proliferation or collagen production. Until now, it was remained uncertain by which mechanism silica particle may activate alveolar macrophage to an enhanced release of prostaglandin E2. Methods: In order to investigate the relationship between the activity of alveolar macrophage and the production of $PGE_2$ from activated alveolar macrophage, the authors measured hydrogen peroxide and $PGE_2$ from alveolar macrophages activated by silica in vitro and from alveolar macrophages in the silicotic nodules from rat. Experimental silicosis was induced by intratracheal infusion of silica($SiO_2$) suspended in saline(50 mg/ml) in Sprague-Dawley rats. Results: produced by 1) The silicotic nodules with fibrosis were seen from the sections of rat lung at 60 days after intratracheal injection with 50 mg aqueous suspension of silica(Fig. 1). 2) In vitro, silica caused the dose dependent increase of hydrogen peroxide(p<0.05, Fig. 2A) and $PGE_2$(p>0.05, Fig. 2B) release from alveolar macrophages. Alveolar macrophages from rat with silicotic nodules released more hydrogen peroxide and $PGE_2$ than those of control group(p<0.05, Fig. 3). Conclusion: These results suggest that silica particle could activate macrophage directly and enhanced the release of $PGE_2$ and hydrogen peroxide from the alveolar macrophage.

Methods : Adenoviral respiratory infection was diagnosed by viral culture in HEp-2 cell and indirect immunofluorescent technique with nasal aspirates. Isolated adenoviruses were typed by neutralization test. Retrospective chart review was done in patients with adenoviruses were typed by neutralization test. Retrospective chart review was done in patients with adenoviral lower respiratory tract infection, who were brought to Seoul National University Children's Hospital from November 1990 through February 1998. Results : Adenovirus was isolated in 87 cases. Of 84 cases serotyped, type 1 was recovered in 3 cases, type 2 in 13 cases, type 3 in 13, type 4 and 5 in 4 cases each other, type 6 in 1 cases, type 7 in 36 cases, type 11 in 1 case and the other types in 9 cases. Adenoviral lower respiratory infection occurred sporadically throughout the year but from November 1995 through February 1998, an outbreak of adenovirus type 7 lower respiratory infection was observed in number upto 36 case. The incidence of adenoviral infection peaked in young children between 6 months and 5 years of age and the mean age was 1 year 11 months old. There were 10 cases of mixed infection with another pathogen. Clinical diagnosis were pneumonia(88%), acute broncholitis(5.4%), acute tracheobronchitis(5.4%), croup(1.3%). The clinical features of adenoviral lower respiratory infection were severe especially in type 3 and 7 infections in aspect of fever duration, ventilator care. Extrapulmonary manifestations were gastrointestinal symptoms in 23 cases(31%), hepatomegaly in 36 cases(53%), seizure and mental alteration in 13 cases(20.3%). In chest radiographic findings, parahilar and peribronchial infiltration were in 49 cases(67%), hyperaeration in 21 cases(29%), atelectasis in 14 cases(19%), consolidation in 39 cases(53%) and bilateral pneumonic infiltration in 28 cases(38%). Among thirty six adenovirus type 7 LRTI, 15 patients(41.6%) had pleural effusion and 3 patients had chest tube insertion. Number of fetal cases related to adenovirus were 9 cases(12%) and fetal cases due to ventilatory failure were 7(11%). Conclusion : During 7 year period of studying adenoviral lower respiratory infection, we identified the serotypes of adenovirus. Among the serotypes, adenovirus type 7 were epidemically isolated. Adenovirus were isolated in severe lower respiratory infection of young children aged between 6 months and 5 years and related to death of the patients, especially when the patients had underlyng diseases or were infected by adenovirus type 7.

  • Compton cameras overcome several limitations of conventional mechanical collimation based gamma imaging devices, such as pin-hole imaging devices, due to its electronic collimation based on coincidence logic. Especially large-scale Compton camera has wide field of view and high imaging sensitivity. Those merits suggest that a large-scale Compton camera might be applicable to monitoring nuclear materials in large facilities without necessity of portability. To that end, our research group have made an effort to design a large-scale Compton camera for safeguard application. Energy resolution or position resolution of large-area detectors vary with configuration style of the detectors. Those performances directly affect the image quality of the large-scale Compton camera. In the present study, a series of Geant4 Monte Carlo simulations were performed in order to examine the effect of those detector parameters. Performance of the designed large-scale Compton camera was also estimated for various monitoring condition with realistic modeling. The conclusion of the present study indicates that the energy resolution of the component detector is the limiting factor of imaging resolution rather than the position resolution. Also, the designed large-scale Compton camera provides the 16.3 cm image resolution in full width at half maximum (angular resolution: $9.26^{\circ}$) for the depleted uranium source considered in this study located at the 1 m from the system when the component detectors have 10% energy resolution and 7 mm position resolution.

  • The applicability of photostimulated-luminescence (PSL) and thermoluminescence (TL) for the detection of 12 food materials (potato, onion, garlic, dried pumpkin, black mushroom, black soybean, Cheongkukjang powder, sea mustard, pepper powder, Ramyun soup, corn tea, and green tea powder) irradiated with an electron beam, gamma ray, and X ray at a range of 0.15 to 10 kGy was investigated. For PSL, negative results (less than 700 photon counts (PCs)) were observed from non-irradiated foods while the irradiated foods showed intermediate (879 to 2,414 PCs) and/or positive (19,951 to 65,919,035 PCs) values. In all irradiated samples, the maximum peak of the TL glow curve was observed between 150 and $250^{\circ}C$. Our findings demonstrate the successful application of PSL and TL to determine whether food items were irradiated or not. However, there were no significant differences among the radiation sources.

  • In animal studies, Magnesium (Mg) - incorporated oxidized implants showed significant enhancement of the bone response. This prospective clinical trial was performed to investigate the success rate, implant stability and marginal bone loss of Mg oxidized clinical implant. The experimental protocol was approved by Institutional Review Board of the Gangneung-Wonju National University Dental Hospital. Fifty healthy patients had partial edentulism were included in this study. Mg oxidized clinical implants (Implant M, Shinhung, Korea) were installed and restored with conventional protocol. The patients were recalled at 1, 3, 6 months after functional loading. Implant stability quotient (ISQ) was measured and periapical radiographic images were obtained. Amount of marginal bone loss was calculated with calibrated images from periapical radiographs. Repeated measured analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey test were used to compare the mean ISQ and bone level. A total of 101 implants were analyzed. The mean ISQ values increased continuously with time lapse from 68.4 at fixture installation to 71.5 at 6 months after loading. Implant stability was correlated with gender, fixture diameter, bone quality and implant sites. The mean marginal bone loss during 6 months after loading was 0.26 mm. There was no failed implant and six-month success rate was 100%. Within the limitations of this study, the six-month success rate of Mg oxidized implant was satisfactory. The implant stability and marginal bone level were excellent. However, further longer clinical studies will be needed to confirm the success of Mg oxidized clinical implant.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effect of floor type of finishing building and increasing market weight of finishing Pigs on Performance, carcass traits and pork quality. Four hundred and forty-four finishing pigs were confined and administered with different floor type(concrete slat and bedded with sawdust) and increasing market weight(110kg to 130kg) of finishing building. The result obtained from this study were summarized as follows; 1. There was no significant difference between the floor type of finishing building in the body weight gain, feed intake and gain per feed. And also increasing market weight of finishing pigs was not affected the performance of finishing pigs. 2. Increasing market weight of finishing pigs affect the carcass yield. The market weight at 130kg showed more amount of each cut of carcass, especially the belly portion was higher, but backfat thickness was not different. 3. Carcass traits did not show any significant difference due to the difference of market weight of finishing pig and floor type of finishing building. 4. There was no significant difference in the chemical compositions and meat color of pork loin between the floor type of finishing building and increasing market weight of finishing pigs.

  • Positional accuracy of the on-board imager (OBI) isocenter with gantry rotation was presented in this paper. Three different type of automatic evaluation methods of discrepancies between therapeutic and OBI isocenter using digital image processing techniques as well as a procedure stated in the customer acceptance procedure (CAP) were applied to check OBI isocenter migration trends. Two kinds of kV x-ray image set obtained at OBI source angle of $0^{\circ},\;90^{\circ},\;180^{\circ},\;270^{\circ}$ and every $10^{\circ}$ and raw projection data for cone-beam CT reconstruction were used for each evaluation method. Efficiencies of the methods were also estimated. If a user needs to obtain an isocenter variation map with full gantry rotation, a method taking OBI image for every $10^{\circ}$ and fitting with 5th order polynomial was appropriate. However for a mere quality assurance (QA) purpose of OBI isocenter accuracy, it was adequate to use only four OBI Images taken at the OBI source angle of $0^{\circ},\;90^{\circ},\;180^{\circ}\;and\;270^{\circ}$. Maximal discrepancy was 0.44 mm which was observed between the OBI source angle of $90^{\circ}\;and\;180^{\circ}$ OBI isocenter accuracy was maintained below 0.5 mm for a year. Proposed QA program may be helpful to Implement a reasonable routine QA of the OBI isocenter accuracy without great efforts.

  • This study was performed to investigate the correlations between steroids and TGF-${\beta}_1$ levels and delayed parturition in SCNT clone calving. The recipients pregnant by AI were used as control (AI-R). All AI-R were labored by natural delivery (n=5, day $284{\pm}0.71$ of pregnancy). The recipients pregnant by SCNT embryo (SCNT-R) showing no signs of delivery about 10 days after expected date were operated by Caesarean section (n=5, day 292). The blood and placentome samples were obtained and weighed at parturition. The concentrations of plasma progesterone (P4) and Estradiol-$17{\beta}$ (E2) were measured by radioimmunoassay (RIA). The levels of plasma and placental TGF-${\beta}_1$ levels were examined by ELISA. The placentomes from SCNT-R were overweight (p<0.05) compared to those of AI-R. The plasma P4 (p<0.01) level in SCNT-R at parturition was significantly higher compared to that of AI-R. In contrast, the plasma E2 level in the SCNT-R was significantly lower compared to that of AI-R (p<0.05). The plasma and placental TGF-${\beta}_1$ protein levels in the SCNT-R were significantly higher than those of AI-R at parturition, respectively (p<0.01). Based on these results, aberrant expressions of steroid hormones and high levels of plasma and placental TGF-${\beta}_1$ protein at parturition may be one of the key indicators on delayed parturition of SCNT clone calving.

  • Background: The alveolar macrophage may metabolize arachidonic acid through cyclooxygenase- and lipoxygenase- catalyzed pathways to produce a variety of metabolites of arachidonic acid. The production of these metabolites of arachidonic acid may enhance the defensive ability of the challenged lung. However, continued stimulation with the consequent production of proinflammtory metabolites of arachidonic acid, may ultimately enhance the disease process by contributing to chronic bronchoconstriction, fibrosis, and the persistent release of toxic oxygen species. Silicosis is an example of a disease process resulting from chronic exposure of the lung to foreign particles. This study was carried out to evaluate the changes of arachidonic acid metabolites from macrophages in experimental silicosis. Methods: We measured $PGE_2$, and $LTB_4$ in cultured macrophages taken from rats by radioimmunoassay at 24 and 48 hours after stimulation by silica dust, natural carbon dust, lipopolysaccharide, calcium ionophore (A23187) and medium (RPMI) as a control. For the experimental silicosis, 50 mg silica in 0.5 ml saline was administered intratracheally into the rat and grown to 20 weeks and measured $PGE_2$, and $LTB_4$ in the cultured macrophages lavaged from that rat. The used stimulants were the same as above. Results: 1) The amount of $PGE_2$ in the cultred macrophages from normal rat was significantly decreased in the group which was stimulated with silica dust for 48 hours compare with control non-stimulated group. 2) In the experimental silicosis group, $PGE_2$, release in cultured macrophages after 48 hours incubation with silica and natural carbon dust tended to be lower than those of non-stimulated group. 3) There were marked changes of $LTB_4$ in the groups of normal rats which were incubated with silica for 24, 48 hours and natural carbon for 48 hours compared with non-stimulated group. 4) In the experimental silicosis group, the release of $LTB_4$ was significantly increased macrophages cultured with silica and natural carbon dust after 24 and 48 hours incubation compared with non-stimulated group. Conclusion: The results of these studies suggest that the in vitro exposure of rat alveolar macrophge to silica and coal dust results in an alteration in alveolar macrophage metabolism of arachidonic acid that may promote an inflammatory reaction in lung tissue.
