Surgical Repair of Rostral Hemimandibular Fractures with Canine Tooth Luxation in a Dog (개에서 견치 탈구를 동반한 앞쪽 하악골 골절의 수술적 정복 1례)

  • A sexually intact female Alaskan Malamute, 5-year-old weighing 25.2 kg presented to the Hangang Animal Hospital, following hit-by-car. On initial presentation, the dog had severe salivation and the right canine tooth luxation. Radiographs revealed fractures of the right rostral hemimandible with the right canine tooth luxation and symphyseal separation. Surgical repair of fractures was performed by use of an interdental wiring technique and external fixation technique that included pins, an acrylic connecting bar, and polymethyl methacrylate bone cement. Post-operative radiographs revealed that bridging callus was well formed over cortices of the fracture area. Pins and an acrylic connecting bar were removed 7 weeks post-operatively. The dog exhibited evidence of normal mastication.

Complete Fracture of Totally Implantable Venous Catheter (완전 거치형 정맥도관의 완전 절단)

  • The patient was a 42-year-old female with breast cancer who had an implantable central venous catheter inserted percutaneously into left subclavian vein for chemotherapy. The postinsertion chest x ray revealed that there was no compressive sigh of catheter. Three months after insertion of the catheter, the patient was admitted to the hospital for 4th chemotherapy. The port was accessed but blood could not be aspirated and the catheter could not be flushed. A chest x ray revealed that the catheter was completely transected at the point where the catheter passed under the clavicle. Percutaneous removal of the distal fragment of the catheter was accomplished. The patient was discharged after successful removal of fragment of catheter.

A STUDY OF THE MANDIBULAR CONDYLE SHAPE ON THE INDIVIDUALIZED CORRECTED TMJ TOMOGRAPH AND SUBMENTOVERTEX RADIOGRAPH (이하두정방사선사진과 개별화 단층방사선사진을 이용한 하악과두의 형태에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to observe mandibular condyle shape in an asymptomatic population. In order to carry out this study, 96 temporomandibular joints in 48 adults(22 males, 26 females), who were asymptomatic for temporomandibular disturbances and had no history of prosthodontic or orthodontic treatments, were selected, and radiographed using the Sectograph(Denar Co., U.S.A.) for lateral and frontal individualized corrected TMJ tomograph and submentovertex radiograph. Mandibular condyles were classified morphologically, and measured medioateral and anteroposterior dimensions and condylar angulation. The obtained results were as follows. 1. In the classification of condyle shape on lateral tomographs, 94.8% were convex type and 5.2% were angled type. 2. In the classification of condyle shape on frontal tomographs, 45.3% were convex type, 32.0% were round type, 16.0% were flat type, and 6.7% were angled type. 3. In the classification of condyle shape on submentovertex radiographs, 34.5% were flat-convex type, 22.9% were flat-flat type, 20.8% were concave-convex type, 19.8% were convex-convex type, and 1.0% were concave-flat type and convex-flat type. Concave-concave type, convex-concave type, and flat-concave type were not observed. 4. The average mediolateral legth of the condyle was 19.3㎜ and the average anteroposterior length was 9.4㎜. The average angle between the long axis of condyle and the coronal plane made on submentovertex view was 19.6 degrees.

  • About twenty years ago the computer was introduced into orthodontic, but not in clinics because it was inconvenient in cost, size, capacity and operation. But recent advances in the technology of electronics have produced a personal computer which is suitable for use in clinics. We have developed useful program for cephalometric Ax, model analysis and patient management. The computer program greatly aided in saving time & effort and performed well in the management & searching for patient data. But further studies about three dimensional analysis, S.T.O. and derivation of automatic treatment planning from analysis are needed.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the level of radiopacity of esthetic dental restorative materials and determine the optimum level of radiopacity in pediatric dentistry. Disks of 8 dental restorative material groups as the experimental group, 7mm in diameter and 2mm thick, were radiographed with intact human deciduous teeth and aluminum stepwedge standard. Radiopacity was evaluated with an image analysis program following the digitization of the radiographs using a flatbed scanner with transparency unit. All materials and tooth structure also the significant difference except FP, VB, VM. For the radiopacity of esthetic restorative dental materials to exceed that of enamel, it should be greater than 1.7mm of equivalent thickness of aluminum.

  • Transcranial radiograph is widely used in the diagnosis of craniomandibular disorder because it can be used by the dentist with relative ease in spite of image distortion. But correct information can be obtained only when one know the image change by projection angulation. The author compared the condyle position in the 3 groups of transcranial radiographs (horizontal angulation - 0°, 5°, individualized) with that in the individualized corrected lateral tomogram by objective and subjective evaluation methods. The results were as follows: 1. Among 3 transcranial groups, the condyle position in individualized group showed the highest concordance rate with that in the tomogram group in objective and subjective evaluation methods. 2. Correlation coefficient between individualized transcranial group and tomogram group in objective evaluation method was highest (P≤0.01). 3. Image clarity in individualized transcranial group was worse than that of the other two transcranial groups.

  • Subtraction is an essential technic to improve imaging quality in various radiological procedures. The limitations of subtraction, however, are well known. Blurred under-subtraction (BUS) method has been suggested to overcome and compensate these limitations. Ten cases of angiography were subtracted by conventional subtraction and BUS technic. Results of this study revealed that BUS method is simple to perform and imaging quality obtained by BUS is excellent. Comparing to conventional subtraction, BUS method has advantages. For example, BUS need no mask film or no immobilization of patient during examination. Improvement of imaging Qualify is achieved by edge enhancement, homogeneous blurring of background density and increasing contrast. With emphasis of its simplicity in technic, we would report that BUS method is a useful adjunct imaging technic in various radiological procedures.

  • There are various kinds of methods to estimate the image quality of x-ray film. The Hawlet-chart is one of the methods to estimate the depiction power of x-ray film image. Authors made a test using the Hawlet-chart in clinical field and demonstrated the superiority of utility value.

  • The reproducibility of cephalography in repeated exposures were studied by tracing and photographic subtraction. The materials consisted of 50 pairs of 'same day' radiograph taken under identical conditions. The evaluation included skull, cervical column, hyoid bone, pharynx, tongue, soft tissue profile resulting 43 items in tracing, and 19 items in photographic subtraction. The results obtained from the differences between each pair were as follows: 1. The means and standard deviations by tracing of skull, cervical column, hyoid bone, pharynx, tongue, soft tissue profile were 0.34±0.62㎜, 1.02±1.59㎜, 1.37±1.78㎜, 0.55±1.16㎜, 0.51±1.51㎜, 0.15±0.3㎜ each. 2. The means and standard deviations by photographic subtraction of skull, cervical column, hyoid bone, pharynx, tongue were 0.09±0.35㎜, 0.70±0.95㎜, 1.22±1.33㎜, 0.53±0.86㎜, 0.27±0.41㎜ each.
