  • In order to detect the internal defects which occur in welding parts of pressure vessel and structures, radiographic testing and ultrasonic testing is applied. However, because of the risks of radiation exposure and film processing, radiographic testing takes a relatively long time to verify the test results and it has affected in the production process. Typically, the manual ultrasonic testing is not easy to reproduce the result and it is highly dependent on the tester's skills. The TOFD technique, one of the automatic ultrasonic testings is spreading alternatively. This research describes the comparing test results by applying radiographic testing and TOFD technique to a mock-up specimen incruding the flaws. The TOFD technique will contribute to improve the objective reliability of the ultrasonic technique.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the radiation dose-response of micronucleus frequencies in Tradescantia pollen mother cells. The number of micronuclei increased in the tetrads as a result of chromosome deletion after irradiation. The maximal frequency of micronuclei showed a good dose-response relationship in the range of dose $0{\sim}50$ cGy. On the basis of the relationship, a dose of 1 cGy results maximally in two additional micronuclei in 100 tetrads. The radiation dose-response relationship of micronucleus occurrence is prerequisite to biological monitoring of radiations. The micronucleus assay can be applied to biological risk assessment of environmental toxicants, and to integrity test of water or soils of interest.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of radiation shielding on the thyroid organ dose and image quality during Chest PA examination using automatic exposure control system. This study was conducted in the patient posture and examination conditions such as Chest PA using human model phantom. An experiment without shielding was set as a control group (non) and the cases of using paper coated with a contrast agent (contrast) and bismuth (bismuth) were used as experimental groups. Compared to non-shielded(non), the dose at bismuth increased about 7% in C(cervical vertebrae)5 and C6 and 14% in C7 and contrast showed dose increases of about 17 to 19% in C5 and C6 and about 21% in C7. As a result of the image quality comparison, when measured in the center of the cervical vertebrae, both SNR and CNR in bismuth increased about 40% higher than non, and contrast showed about 8 to 9% improvement. Compared with soft tissues of the cervix, bismuth reduced SNR by about 15% and CNR by about 13%, in contrast, SNR decreased by 11%, and CNR decreased by about 10%. In the Chest PA using AEC, the method of using the shield in front of the collimator has the advantage to observe the anatomical structure of the neck area well compared to the method using the lead. However, the dose at the neck can be increased by 7-21% depending on shielding materials.

  • When a metal oxide field effect transistor (MOSFET) is exposed to ionizing radiation, electron/hole pairs are generated in its oxide layer. The slow moving holes of them are trapped in the oxide layer of p-MOSFET and appear as extra charges that change the characteristics of the transistor. The radiation-induced charges directly impact the threshold (turn-on) voltage of the transistor. This paper describes the use of the radiation-induced threshold voltage change as an accumulated radiation dose monitoring sensor. Two kinds of commercial p-type MOSFETS were tested in a Co-60 gamma irradiation facility to see their capabilities as a radiation dosimeter. We found that the transistors showed good linearity in their threshold voltage shift characteristics with radiation dose. The results demonstrate the potential use of commercial p-MOSFETS as inexpensive radiation sensors for the first time.

  • In this study, we studied the gamma-radiation effect of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) on the high temperature annealing condition after grating inscription using a KrF UV laser (248 nm). The FBGs were fabricated in a different annealing temperature using the same commercial Ge-doped silica core fiber (SMF-28e) and exposed to gamma-radiation up to a dose of 31 kGy at the dose rate of 115 Gy/min. The high temperature annealing procedure for grating stabilization was applied to change the radiation sensitivity of the FBGs. According to the experimental data and analysis results, the gratings that were stabilized at different temperatures at 100, 150 and $200^{\circ}C$ have clearly shown that exposure to higher temperatures increases their radiation sensitivity. The radiation-induced Bragg wavelength shift (BWS) was shown a difference of up to about a factor of two depending on the annealing temperature conditions of the gratings.

  • This study confirmed the usefulness of the copper filter according to the mode change by comparing and analyzing the energy change according to the application of the copper filter and the change in effective dose and image quality according to the distance to the subject in the DR(Digital Radiography) system. The average energy increased when the copper filter was applied and the reduction rate by 50% of mAs was increased as the thickness of the copper filter increased according to the application of the 10 kVp rule in AEC mode. The effective dose decreased as the thickness increased when the copper filter was applied in AEC(Automatic Exposure Control) mode and manual mode according to the application of the 10 kVp rule, and the decrease rate decreased with increasing 10 kVp increments. As a result of analyzing the dicom images for AEC mode and manual mode with Image J. the PSNR(Peak Signal to Noise Ratio) values were approximate values of less than 30 dB for each mode and for each copper filter thickness. When the copper filter was applied, the average energy increased, so when the 10 kVp rule was applied, the mAs for each mode could be reduced, and the effective dose could also be reduced. However, as the distance and tube voltage increased, the reduction rate of mAs decreased, and the quality of the image was found to decrease when the copper filter was applied, but there was no difference in quality of the image when the copper filter thickness increased.

  • Dose creep is one of clinical errors that arises from the tester's inexperience or carelessness, and according to Task Group #116 of American Association of Physicists in Medicine, its continued occurrence is being reported in the digital method. At this point, the demand for an automatic exposure control device that minimizes the dose creep phenomenon and can improve reproducibility is increasing. In this study is to consider the automatic exposure control device sensor that can is not only easy to produce, but also reduce the dose creep phenomenon by conducting a research on high-efficient semiconductor sensor. As a result, the Intrinsic-type and PIN-type sensors have excellent optical property compared to Ref sensor, would have less shading effect, and have relatively low sensitivity, but would provide accurate feedback signals to automatic exposure control device with its consistent tendency according to exposure condition changes.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the difference of dose and image quality according to the material of the additional filter plate by selecting copper and nickel. First, the absorbed dose was measured using a Rando phantom setting the additional filter plates of copper and nickel None, 0.1 mm, 0.2 mm, and 0.3 mm under 120 kVp, and 6.3 mAs. Second, We acquired image according to filter thickness of copper and nickel. by changing the tube voltage of 90 kVp, 100 kVp, 110 kVp, 120 kVp and exposure indexes of 400, 800 and 1600. Third, we obtained the SNR and CNR values using the Image J program and evaluated quantitatively and then evaluated image quality. As a result, Absorbed dose measurements showed that nickel was higher than copper, and the absorbed dose decreased as the thickness increased(p<0.05). Furthermore, Quantitative analysis of images showed no significant difference between the two images according to change the voltage and the exposure index(p>0.05). In conclusion, this study confirms that the nickel addition plate can maintain the current image quality while reducing the exposure dose compared to copper.

  • As modern science is developed and advanced, examination and number of times using radiation are increasing daily. General diagnostic X-ray generator is installed on stationary form, But X-ray generator was developed because patient who is in the intensive care unit, operation room, emergency room can not move to general x-ray room. What we examine patient by x-ray generator is certainly necessary, So patient exposure is inevitable. but reducing radiation exposure is highly important matter about radiation technology, guardian, patient in the same hospital room, nurse etc. For this reason, rule regarding safety control of diagnostic x-ray generator revised for radiation worker, patient and protector proclaim that mobile diagnostic x-ray shield must placed in case of examine different location excluding operation room, emergency room, intensive care unit. But, radiogical technologist is having a lot of difficulties to examine with mobile x-ray generator, diagnostic x-ray shield partition, image plate and lead apron. So, when we use x-ray generator, we manufacture shield tools can be attached to the mobile x-ray generator On behalf of x-ray shield partition and conduct analysis and in comparison to part of body and distribution of dose rate and find way to reduce radiation exposure through distribution of dose rate of patient within the radiogical technologist, medical team. Mobile x-ray generator aimed at SHIMADZU inc. R-20, We manufactured equipment for shielding x-ray scattered x-ray by installing shielding wall from side to side based on support beam on the mobile x-ray generator. Shielding wall when moving can be folded and designed to expand when examine. Experiment measured five times in each by an angle for dose rate of eyes, thyroid, breast, abdomen and gonad on exposure condition of upper and lower extremity, chest, abdomen which is examined many times by mobile x-ray generator. We used dosimeter RSM-100 made by IJRAD and measured a horizontal dose rate by body part. The result of an experiment, shielding decreasing rate of the front and the rear showed 77 ~ 98.7%. Therefore using self-production shielding wall reduce scattered x-ray occurrence rate and confirm can decrease exposure dose consequently. Therefore, through this study, reduction result which is used shielding wall of self-production will be a role of shielding optimization and it could be answer about reduction of medical exposure recommended by ICRP 103.

  • Purpose: Effective half life of I-131 ($T_{eff}$) in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer treated by I-131 is must-know value for dose calculation and determination of release time from isolation room. There has been no report about $T_{eff}$ in Koreans. Thus, author tried to measure dose rate without radiation exposure to faculty members and calculated $T_{eff}$. Methods: Probe of radiation survey meter was fixed at the wall of isolation room, and body of survey meter was placed outside the room. With this simple arrangement, author could measure radiation frequently without radiation exposure to faculty members in 68 patient (F=55, M=13, age=$47{\pm}13.7$) treated by I-131 ($3.7{\sim}7.4\;GBq$) for differentiated thyroid cancer from Jan 2006 to Dec 2006. From this data, $T_{eff}$, 48 hr retention rate, and the time necessary to whole body retention of I-131 become less than 1.1 GBq were calculated. Serum creatinine levels were measured before and after thyroid hormone withdrawal. Results: $T_{eff}$ was $15.4{\pm}4.3\;hr$ ($9.4{\sim}32.5\;hr$). There was a loose correlation between $T_{eff}$ and serum creatinine concentration (r=0.45). 48hr retention was $4.9{\pm}4.2%$ ($1{\sim}23%$). Time necessary to whole body retention of I-131 become less than 1.1 GBq was calculated as $47.1{\pm}13.2\;hr$ for 9.25 GBq, $42.1{\pm}11.9\;hr$ for 7.4 GBq, $35.7{\pm}10.0\;hr$ for 5.55 GBq, and $26.7{\pm}7.5\;hr$ for 3.7 GBq dose of I-131. Conclusion: Author successfully measured radiation dose rates in isolated patients treated by high dose of I-131 without radiation exposure to the faculty members with simple arrangement of survey meter probe. Using those data, $T_{eff}$ and some other indices were calculated.
