  • This study investigates aspects of the zone of proximal development (ZPD), the distance between the actual development and the potential development. Out of 18 university students taking a geometry course, two students with the same actual developmental level in the van Hiele model in the pre-test and post-test were interviewed for measuring their potential developmental level. Based on the communicational approach to cognition, the characteristics of the two interviewees' discourse on 3D reflective symmetry were identified. There were considerable differences between the two interviewees in terms of their potential developmental level. Methodological implications for how to investigate students' ZPD in mathematics education research were addressed.

  • Given that the number of people with developmental disabilities is continuously increasing in Korea, we need to pay attention to the lives of parents who rear the children with developmental disabilities. Accordingly, this study examined the effects of parenting stress on the quality of life in parents of children with developmental disabilities, and moderating effects of information application in the process. This study conducted a survey to 194 parents who rear such children in Chungnam and Chungbuk provinces. This study utilized PASW Statistics 18.0 for analysis, and the study results are as follows. First, it was found that parenting stress was more than average level, and information application was somewhat lower than average level. Quality of life was found to be lower than average level, and the level of relationship with neighborhood and emotional condition was relatively lower than other sub-factors. Second, influential factors of life quality were parenting stress, disability degree, information application, residential area, and disability type. Third, information application was found to have moderating effects on the relationship between parenting stress and quality of life. Based on such empirical analysis results, this study suggested concrete and comprehensive working strategies to improve quality of life in parents of children with developmental disabilities.

  • This study looked into changes in the parenting stress and the depression of mothers whose children at the age of three or younger have been suffering from developmental risk, and discussed how the parenting stress would constantly influence the depression. In order to achieve the research goal, the study used the data from the Panel Study of Korean Children. According to the findings of the study, first of all, the parenting stress increased significantly for the next four years after the childbirth. The study also understood that there are personal differences among the mothers in relation to how much the stress gets worse overtime. Second, more severe the parenting stress during the year of the childbirth, the greater the depression during the same year, and this parenting stress's being intensified even more greatly for the four years right after the childbirth turned out to have a significant effect on how much the depression develops. What this study has found out so far confirms that the depression of the mothers will get reduced when the mothers of the children with the developmental risks before the age of three try to efficiently deal with their parenting stress.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of climacteric women's attitude to developmental phenomena and their menopausal symptoms on their meaning of life in an attempt to provide some information on the improvement of climacteric women's quality of life. The subjects in this study were 313 women who resided in different regions involving a large city D and another city C. They were aged between 40 and 60 and were going through their menopause. They were aged between 40 and 60 and were going through their menopause. The subjects were selected by convenient sampling, which was one of nonprobability sampling methods. The collected data were analyzed by the statistical package SPSS. The major findings of the study were as follows: First, the climacteric women didn't take a positive attitude toward developmental phenomena. They occasionally suffered severe menopausal symptoms, and they didn't find a great meaning in their life. Second, the climacteric women found a more meaning in their life when they took a more positive attitude to developmental phenomena, and those who underwent severer menopausal symptoms found a less meaning in their life. Third, the climacteric women's meaning of life was under the influence of their attitude toward developmental phenomena and menopausal symptoms. Specifically, their attitude to menopause and mental symptoms had a large impact on that. Given the findings of the study, social welfare intervention should be provided for climacteric women to promote their physical health related to menopausal symptoms and psychological health related to attitude toward developmental phenomena to find a more meaning in their life. Besides, local welfare centers should be open to climacteric women as one of governmental policies so that they could lead a healthy life. Education should be provided for them to be ready for their own menopause, and social welfare counseling service should be offered from diverse angles

  • This study verified the effects of violent PC games and aggressive personality on aggressive behavior and aggressive intention as predicted by GAM in Anderson and Bushman (2002), and a correlational study and experimental research were carried out to corroborate a differences of the effects of the two variables according to the developmental levels. The correlational study showed that aggressive personality was an explanatory variable for aggressive behavior; however, exposure to violent PC games was not a significant factor, contrary to the predictions by GAM. It has been clarified that the effects of the two variables influenced aggressive behavior in a different way according to the developmental levels. Further, no positive relation existed between repetitive (chronic) violent PC game plays and aggressive personality. The experimental research analyzed the differences of aggressive intention in each of the experimental conditions designed with a 2(PC games types: violent vs. non-violent) x 2(aggressive personality: high vs. low) x 2 (developmental levels: middle school boys and college students) between-subjects factorial design. As a result, violent PC games had an effect on aggressive intention for the middle school boy group, while it was supported that aggressive personality had an effect on aggressive intention for both middle school and college students. Noticeably, the primary hypothesis in the study has been supported that the effects of violent PC games and aggressive personality on aggressive intention vary according to different age groups. In conclusion, the effects of violent PC games and aggressive personality as predicted by GAM have been confirmed in parts; however, future studies on GAM must be necessarily supplemented with the developmental perspectives, as it has been ascertained that the effects of the variables vary according to the developmental levels.

  • This study examined the longitudinal relationship between paternal depressive symptoms and maternal depressive symptoms simultaneously. This study also identified the interplay of paternal and maternal depressive symptoms for predicting elementary children's language development, their problem behaviors and their school adjustment. Using the data from the Panel Study on Korean Children for the 4th-8th years (2011~2015 year), this study used the Latent Growth Curve Model, which is helpful for examining longitudinal relationship differences among variables. The sample subjects were 1,754 parents and children. The results are as follows. The initial level of paternal depressive symptoms had a positive impact on the rate of change in maternal depressive symptoms. The initial level of maternal depressive symptoms had a negative impact on the rate of change in maternal depressive symptoms. Mothers' depressive symptoms showed not only the mothers' own depression problem. but also the self-effect and counterpart effect of depression on the fathers' depression problem. The rate of change in maternal depressive symptom mediated the relation between the initial level of parental depressive symptoms and children's receptive language, internalizing/externalizing problems, and school adjustment. Therefore, depression prevention and intervention programs for both fathers and mothers are needed for the healthy development and school adaptation of school-age children.

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze the mathematical tasks of length measurement in two different perspectives, the level of cognitive demands and learning trajectories, and restructure the mathematical tasks so that the students' conceptual learning is promoted and students are able to have opportunities to think more broadly. Ten lessons with the restructured mathematical tasks were implemented for a class of 2nd grade elementary students. Also a qualitative and in-depth study was conducted with 4 students of the target group. The study shows that firstly, the restructured tasks requiring high level of cognitive skills, had positive effects in increasing the students' level of thinking and reasoning. Secondly, the tasks modified according to the learning trajectories of Szilag, Clements & Sarama(2013) in length measurement, have proven to promote students' concept learning and elaborate the students' level of thinking.
