  • On January 1, 2005, the Special Act on Metropolitan Air Quality Improvement, known as the Blue Sky 21 Program, entered into force. This Special Act is aimed at reducing the annual average concentrations of $PM_{10}$ and $NO_2$ to $40{\mu}g/m^3$ and 22ppb, respectively, from their current levels of $76{\mu}g/m^3$ and 36ppb, within the next 10 years. While the main focus of the Act is to reduce $PM_{10}$ and $NO_2$ emissions, the government also anticipates that these reductions would lessen high ozone occurrences and improve visibility. However, reducing local PM emissions would not decrease $PM_{10}$ concentrations as much as expected since other significant sources, such as continental inflow and/or secondary formation from photochemical reactions, exist. This is corroborated by the fact that $PM_{10}$ in the greater Seoul Metropolitan area during the ozone season is mostly in the form of $PM_{2.5}$, which is secondarily formed on a regional scale. Furthermore, many modeling results indicate so-called '$NO_x$ disbenefits,' referring to the fostering of an increase in ozone concentrations from a decrease in $NO_x$ emissions, over an extensive area. In this paper, the current status of air quality in the Seoul Metropolitan area is reviewed, and several other issues, including the effect of long-range transport, photochemical characteristics, and tasks for successful implementation of the Special Act are discussed.

  • In order to predict the performance of biological wastewater treatment plant, the kinetic parameters and stoichiometric coefficient must be known. The theories and experimental procedures for determining the biological kinetic parameters were discussed in this study. Respirometric analysis in the batch reactor was carried out for the experimental assessment of kinetic parameters. A simple procedure to estimate kinetic parameters of heterotrophs and autotrophs under aerobic condition was presented. The difficulties in the interpretation of COD and VSS measurements encouraged the conversion of respirometric data to growth data. Maximum specific growth rate, yield coefficient, half saturation constant and decay rate of heterotrophic biomass were obtained from OUR(Oxygen Uptake Rate) data. Maximum specific growth rate of autotrophic biomass was obtained from the increase of nitrate concentration. The aim of this paper is to estimate the kinetic parameters of heterotrophic and autotrophic biomass by means of the respirometric analysis of activated sludge behavior in the batch reactors. These procedures may be used for the activated sludge modeling with complex kinetic parameters.

  • The basic mechanistic aspects of the interaction and practical considerations related to polymer ablation were briefly reviewed. Photochemical and photothermal effects, which highly depend on laser wavelength have close correlation with each other. In this study, multi-scanning laser ablation processing of polymer with a DPSS (Diode Pumped Solid State) 3rd harmonic Nd:YVO$_4$ laser (355 nm) was developed to fabricate a three-dimensional micro shape. Polymer fabrication using DPSSL has some advantages compared with the conventional polymer ablation process using KrF and ArF laser with 248 nm and 193 nm wavelength. These advantages include pumping efficiency and low maintenance cost. And this method also makes it possible to fabricate 2D patterns or 3D shapes rapidly and cheaply because CAD/CAM software and precision stages are used without complex projection mask techniques. Photomachinability of polymer is highly influenced by laser wavelength and by the polymer's own chemical structure. So the optical characteristics of polymers for a 355 nm laser source is investigated experimentally and theoretically. The photophysical and photochemical parameters such as laser fluence, focusing position, and ambient gas were considered to reduce the plume effect which re-deposits debris on the surface of substrate. These phenomena affect the surface roughness and even induce delamination around the ablation site. Thus, the process parameters were tuned to optimize for gaining precision surface shape and quality. This maskless direct photomachining technology using DPSSL could be expected to manufacture tile prototype of micro devices and molds for the laser-LIGA process.

  • Modern aircraft fighters improve the maneuverability and performance with the RSS (Relaxed Static Stability) concept and therefore these aircrafts are susceptible to abrupt pitch-up in the transonic and moderate Angle-of-Attack (AoA) flight region where the shock wave is formed and the mean aerodynamic center is moved forward during deceleration. Also, the modeling of the aircraft flying in this flight region is very difficult due to complex flow filed and unpredictable dynamic characteristics and the model-based control design technique does not fully cover this problem. In this paper, we analyzed the performance of the TPMC (Transonic Pitching Moment Compensation) control based on the model-based IDI (Incremental Dynamic Inversion) and the Hybrid IDI based on the model and sensor based IDI during the SDT (Slow Down Turn) in transonic region. As the result, the Hybrid IDI had quicker response and the same maximum g suppression performance and provided the predictable flying qualities compared to the TPMC control. The Hybrid IDI improved the performance of the Over-G protection controller in the transonic and moderate AoA region

  • This study aims to provide a predictive model based on climate models for simulating continuous daily rainfall sequences by combining bias-correction and spatio-temporal downscaling approaches. For these purposes, this study proposes a combined modeling system by applying conditional Copula and Multisite Non-stationary Hidden Markov Model (MNHMM). The GloSea5 system releases the monthly rainfall prediction on the same day every week, however, there are noticeable differences in the updated prediction. It was confirmed that the monthly rainfall forecasts are effectively updated with the use of the Copula-based bias-correction approach. More specifically, the proposed bias-correction approach was validated for the period from 1991 to 2010 under the LOOCV scheme. Several rainfall statistics, such as rainfall amounts, consecutive rainfall frequency, consecutive zero rainfall frequency, and wet days, are well reproduced, which is expected to be highly effective as input data of the hydrological model. The difference in spatial coherence between the observed and simulated rainfall sequences over the entire weather stations was estimated in the range of -0.02~0.10, and the interdependence between rainfall stations in the watershed was effectively reproduced. Therefore, it is expected that the hydrological response of the watershed will be more realistically simulated when used as input data for the hydrological model.

  • Induced polarization (IP) was first published in a Korean academic journal in 1973, and it was soon applied to coal and metal ore exploration. Then, in universities and research institutes, IP modeling studies using the finite element approach and experimental studies on IP responses for artificial samples were conducted. In the mid-1980s, the spectral IP (SIP) measurement module was introduced to Korea, and physical scale modeling and inversion approaches were developed. Due to the decline of the mineral resource industry, this method was not actively applied. However, the SIP method was not applied In the 1990s, IP exploration was applied in the investigation of hydrothermal deposits of sulfide minerals and bentonite mineralization zones, as well as to areas where the groundwater was contaminated by intruding seawater. In the 2000s, three-dimensional inversion of the IP approach was developed, and high-precision geophysical exploration was required to secure domestic and overseas mineral resources, so SIP experiments on rock samples and approaches for field exploration were developed. The SIP approach was proven useful for the exploration of metal deposits containing sulfide minerals by applying it to explore the mineralization zone of gold-silver deposits in the Haenam region. The IP method is considered to be effective in exploring critical minerals (lithium, cobalt, and nickel) in high-tech industries. It also is expected to be useful for environmental and geotechnical investigations.

  • In this study, experiential STEAM program using 3D printer was produced focusing on the content elements of 'solar' in the 2015 revised science curriculum, and in order to find out the effectiveness of the STEAM program, analyzed creative problem solving, STEAM attitude, and STEAM satisfaction by applying it to two middle school 77 students simple random sampled. The results of this study are as follows. First, a solar tactile model was produced using a 3D printer, and a program was developed to enable students to actively learn experience-oriented activities through visual impairment experiences. Second, in the response sample t-test by the difference in pre- and post-score of STEAM attitude tests, significant statistical test results were shown in 'interest', 'consideration', 'self-concept', 'self-efficacy', and 'science and engineering career choice' sub-factors except 'consideration' and 'usefulness / value recognition' sub-factors (p<.05). Third,, the STEAM satisfaction test conducted after the application of the 3D printer-based STEAM program showed that the average value range of sub-factors were 3.66~3.97, which improved students' understanding and interest in science subjects through the 3D printer-based STEAM program.

  • Boron(B) is a rare resource used for various purposes such as glass, semiconductor materials, gunpowder, rocket fuel, etc. However, Korea depends entirely on imports for boron. Considering the global boron reserves and its current production rate, boron will be depleted on earth in 50 years. Thus, a process including proper adsorbent materials recovering boron from seawater is demanded. This research proposed carbonized nanofibers prepared from electrospun PAN(polyacrylonitrile) mats as promising materials to adsorb boron in aqueous solution. First, the mechanism of boron adsorption on carbonized nanofibers was investigated by DFT(density functional method)-based molecular modeling and the calculated energetics demonstrated that the boron chemisorption on the nitrogen-doped graphene surface by a two-step dehydration is possible with viable activation energies. Then, the electrospun PAN mats were stabilized in air and then carbonized in an argon atmosphere before being immersed in the boric acid aqueous solution. Analytically, SEM(scanning electron microscopy) and Raman measurements were employed to confirm whether the electrospinning and carbonization of PAN mats proceeded successfully. Then, XPS(X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) peak analysis showed whether the intended nitrogen-doped carbon nanofiber surface was formed and boron was properly adsorbed on nanofibers. Those results demonstrated that the carbonized nanofibers prepared from electrospun PAN mats could be feasible adsorbents for boron recovery in seawater.

  • Post-spill monitoring of hazardous noxious substances accidents is essential in the event of a spillage of significant quantities of pollutants and for the management of the marine environment resulting from the long-term effects of the persistent toxic substances. The accidental introduction of a sinker into the marine environment can create harmful anaerobic conditions in the benthic ecosystem and spread over the seafloor by the topography and currents. Through case studies, most post-spill monitoring includes modeling, remote sensing, and chemical analyses of the sediment and benthic organisms. The monitoring also evaluates the effectiveness of restoration and recovery activities and assesses damages and compensation.

  • Hydrochemical characteristics and microbial communities of spring (Samtong), surface water, and groundwater in Cheorwon, Korea, were analyzed. Field surveys and water quality analyses were undertaken at 10 sampling points for five spring, two surface, and three groundwater samples on 15 December 2022. Hydrochemical analysis revealed that most water samples were Ca-HCO3 type and that water-rock interactions were the predominant mineral source. Radon concentrations were <1 kBq m-3 for surface water, 1~10 kBq m-3 for spring water, and 1~1,000 kq m-3 for groundwater. Microbial cluster analysis showed that the main phyla were Proteobacteria, Planctomyceta, Verrucomicrobia, Acidobacteria, and Actinomycetota.Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) analysis indicated that water temperature, pH, and Si content were closely related to microorganism content. NMDS and canonical correspondence analysis results revealed that environmental factors affecting spring water were temperature, and Mg and Si concentrations, particularly for Acidobacteria and Proteobacteria, and Pseudomonas brenneri. Both hydrochemical and microbial community analyses yielded similar results at some spring and groundwater sampling points, likely due to the effects of a basalt aquifer.
