  • This study is to investigate particle size and velocity profile of gasoline port injector using Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer (PDPA). In this experiment, a GV 250 Delphi port injector used for motorcycles was used for liquid injection. The injector consists of four holes and has a static flow rate of 2.13 g/s. The fuel used in the injection was N-heptane, which is similar to gasoline, as an alternative fuel. The test fuel was injected at an atmospheric temperature of $20^{\circ}C$ and an open atmosphere of 1 atm. The injection time was 10 ms and the injection pressure was 3.5 bar in PDPA experiment. The experimental target position was fiexd at 30, 50 and 75 mm from the nozzle tip and data were collected for a total of 10,000 samples. The experimental results show that the length diameter (D10), the Sauter mean diameter ($D_{32}$), and the mean droplet velocity (MDV) are $45-54{\mu}m$, $99-115{\mu}m$ and 15-21 m/s, respectively.

  • Solid base catalysts for biodiesel production were synthesized by impregnating basic metal species on two support materials with large specific surface area : zeolite and pyrolysis char. KL zeolite and Undaria pinnatifida char were impregnated with KOH aqueous solution and calcium nitrate solution, respectively, to enhance the basic strength. The catalysts synthesized were characterized using Hammett indicators and $CO_2$-TPD analysis. Biodiesel was produced using soybean oil and methanol over the catalysts synthesized. The content of fatty acid methyl esters was measured to evaluate the catalytic activity. Generally, the catalytic activity increased with increasing quantity of basic metal impregnated but impregnation of excessive amount of metal could cause reduction in the activity.

  • A filamentous cyanobacterium, Limnothrix sp. KNUA012, was axenically isolated from a freshwater bloom sample in Lake Hapcheon, Hapcheon-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea. Its morphological and molecular characteristics led to identification of the isolate as a member of the genus Limnothrix. Maximal growth was attained when the culture was incubated at 25℃. Analysis of its lipid composition revealed that strain KNUA012 could autotrophically synthesize alkanes, such as pentadecane (C15H32) and heptadecane (C17H36), which can be directly used as fuel without requiring a transesterification step. Two genes involved in alkane biosynthesis-an acyl-acyl carrier protein reductase and an aldehyde decarbonylase-were present in this cyanobacterium. Some common algal biodiesel constituents-myristoleic acid (C14:1), palmitic acid (C16:0), and palmitoleic acid (C16:1)-were produced by strain KNUA012 as its major fatty acids. A proximate analysis showed that the volatile matter content was 86.0% and an ultimate analysis indicated that the higher heating value was 19.8 MJ kg−1. The isolate also autotrophically produced 21.4 mg g−1 phycocyanin-a high-value antioxidant compound. Therefore, Limnothrix sp. KNUA012 appears to show promise for application in cost-effective production of microalga-based biofuels and biomass feedstock over crop plants.

  • To evaluate agronomic characteristics for the use of biodiesel crop, 328 collections of sunflower (Helianthus annus L.) were obtained from Genebank in Rural Development Adminstration (RDA). The necessary days from seeding to emergence of collections were from 7 to 12 days, and the days to flowering were widely distributed from 55 to 86 days. Stem length ranged from 131 to 345 cm with a mean of 259 cm, and the mean maturing days were 35 days. The number of head flower was 1~23 ea per plant, and the mean size of head flower was 17.6 cm with a range from 14.7 to 21.3 cm (72.8%). The mean seed number per head flower was 1,430 ea, and the weight of seed per plant ranged from 23 to 379 g with a mean of 91.4 g. The mean seed length was 11.7 mm with a range from 9.0 to 21.5 mm, and the mean diameter was 6.4 mm. The mean weight of seed per litter, 1000 grain weight and seed weight per plant were 322.5 g, 63.3 g and 204 g, respectively. Variation of number of head per plant was largest and weight of grain per plant was large in next among growth and grain characteristics. At the results of correlation analysis among characteristics, the seed diameter was getting bigger and the days for flowering dates were prolonged in the higher stem length plant, but the days to maturing and growth duration was shortened.

  • Due to the increase of oil price and the environmental issue such as the emission of volatile organic compounds, the necessity for developing alternative resins of petroleum-based adhesive resins, which have extensively been used for the manufacture of wood-based products, has been speculation since the early 1990. In our study, rapeseed flour (RSF), which is the by-product of bio-diesel produced from rapeseed, were hydrolyzed by enzymes. As a crosslinking agents of the RSF hydrolyzates, phenol-formaldehyde prepolymers (PF) were prepared. The RSF hydrolyzates and PF were mixed to complete the formulation of RSF-based adhesive resins, and the resins were applied to make the laminated veneer lumber (LVL). The physical and mechanical properties of the LVL were measured to examine whether RSF can be used as raw materials of adhesive resins for the fabrication of LVL or not. The average moisture content and soaking delamination rate of the LVL bonded with RSF-based adhesive resins exceeded the minimum requirement of KS standard. Moreover, thermal analysis of the RSF-based resins showed similar tendencies except for the RSF-based adhesive resins formulated with pectinase-hydrolyzed RSF. The bending strengths of the LVL were higher than that of the LVL made with commercial PF resins. These results showed the potential of RSF as a raw material of alternative adhesives for the production of LVL. Further works on the optimal conditions of RSF hydrolysis and spreading characteristics for RSF-based adhesive resins is required to improve the adhesive performance of RSF-based resins.

  • To develop new varieties of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.), the seeds of three varieties 'Naehan', 'Tammi', and 'Halla' were treated with proton ion beams and gamma rays (0~2,000 Gy), and then the characteristics of the mutants induced were examined up to $M_5$ generation to select the lines with fixed useful traits. In $M_5$ generation, we had selected several lines that were highly fixed for some useful traits such as plant height, maturity and flower size; one line with both earlier maturity and shorter stem than wild type, one line with only earlier maturity, two lines with shorter stem, one line with large flower, and one line with chlorophyll mutation. Among them, NP600-1-1-198-2 (induced from variety 'Naehan' was treated with proton ion beams 600 Gy) was superior for its distinction from the original variety, uniformity and stability. The unique characteristics of NP600-1-1-198-2 were dark green leaves, green stem, yellow flower, and black seed coat. Its flowering date was April 14, eight days earlier than its original variety, while seed maturity date was June 16 (five days earlier) and plant height 105 cm (shorter by 10 cm). NP600-1-1-198-2 has 52 silique per panicle, 6.2 cm silique length, 23 seeds per silique, 4.2 g per 1000 seeds and 45.9% oil content. The seed oil contained 67.8% of oleic acid, 16.7% of linoleic acid and 7.3% of linolenic acid but no erucic acid.

  • The interest to develop adhesives from renewable resources is growing to substitute petroleum-based adhesive resins in the manufacture of wood based panels. In our study, rapeseed flour (RSF), which is the by-product of bio-diesel produced from rapeseed, were hydrolyzed with acid and alkali. As a crosslinking agents of the RSF hydrolyzates, phenol-formaldehyde prepolymers (PF) were prepared. The RSF hydrolyzates and PF were mixed to complete the formulation of RSF-based adhesive resins, and the resins were applied to make the medium density fiberboard (MDF). The physical and mechanical properties of the MDF were measured to examine whether RSF can be used as raw materials of adhesive resins for the manufacture of MDF or not. The average moisture content and density of the MDF made with RSF-based adhesive resins satisfied the minimum requirement of KS standard, but the thickness swelling was not. The bending strengths of the MDF made with RSF-based adhesive resins were lower than that of the MDF made with commercial UF resins, but the internal bonding strengths of tested MDF in some make-up conditions of RSF-based adhesive resins were higher than that of MDF made with commercial UF resins. These results showed the potential of RSF as a raw material of adhesives for the production of MDF. Future works on the optimal manufacturing process conditions of MDF made with RSF-based adhesive resins are required to improve the performance of MDF made with RSF-based resins.

  • During a last decade, the introduced traits in commercialized GM crops have been diversified from a simple trait such as herbicide resistance gene or insectresistance gene which are related to the crop production into more complicated traits such as modification of fatty acid or essential amino acid composition, modified coloring pattern of flower. In addition, it was investigated that several other GM crops bearing more refined traits expected to lead next generation are also awaiting for risk assessment (RA) or under field test for the preparation of RA in the near future. These GM crops include abiotic stress resistance including drought or cold, increased biomass, production of bioethanol or diesel, production of pharmaceuticals or functional materials for industrial. In particular, in 2008 and 2009, it was reported that the highest number of GM crops for molecular farming are under developed in laboratory or green house level in all the world. Likewise, in Korea, 171 events from 49 plant species are under developed to introduce several important traits. At present, about 10 events are under field test to select elite lines for RA application. For the first time, herbicide resistance turfgrass developed by Korean research team has been submitted for RA and currently under requested for additional data. Moreover, GM rice resistant to leaf roll (folder) disease is expected as a next event to be submitted for RA application.

  • Camelina sativa L., known as popular names "gold-of-pleasure" or "false flax" is an alternative oilseed crop that can be grown under different climatic and soil conditions. Up to date, however, the genomic information of Camelina has not been studied in detail. Therefore, a cDNA library was constructed and characterized from young leaves. The constructed cDNA library incorporated of 1334 cDNA clones and the size of the insertion fragments average was 736 base pair. We generated a total of 1269 high-quality expressed sequence tags (ESTs) sequences. The result of cluster analysis of EST sequences showed that the number of unigene was 851. According to subsequent analysis, the 476 (55.9%) unigenes were highly homologous to known function genes and the other 375 (44.1%) unigenes were unknown. Remaining 63 (7.4%) unigenes had no homology with any other peptide in NCBI database, indicating that these seemed to be novel genes expressed in leaves of Camelina. The database-matched ESTs were further classified into 17 categories according to their functional annotation. The most abundant of categories were "protein with binding function or cofactor requirement (27%)", "metabolism (11%)", "subcellular localization (11%)", "cellular transport, transport facilities and transport routes (7%)", "energy (6%)", "regulation of metabolism and protein function (6%)". Our result in this study provides an overview of mRNA expression profile and a basal genetic information of Camelina as an oilseed crop.
