  • In the Ice Valley, it freeze in summer season. However, there is no ice during winter. In order to clarify the phenomenon of unusual temperature, numerical experiments were conducted using the coupled equations of fluid flow and heat transfer. The results demonstrated that temperature inversion in the Ice Valley is primarily due to delay of the groundwater temperature. Also, the results of the simulation suggest that major factors affecting the delay are the topographical configuration, geological factors and groundwater flow system, combined with groundwater recharge and discharge systems.

  • In response to anthropogenic global warming due to a buildup greenhouse gas, the effect of the air temperature on water temperature has been noticed. Therefore, effects have been made to build an air/water temperature relationship at three study regions using the data collected by the Ministry of the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MOMAF). The air/water relationship varies with time-scale and weekly time-scale was chosen for the study. The data were fitted to the S-shaped non-linear relationship, and the parameters for the S-curve were derived using a single-criteria multi-parameter optimization scheme. Separate regression curves were fitted to consider seasonal hysteresis at the Masan site. The study results support the S-shaped non-linear relationship is the best fit for the air/water relationship at the Korean coastal zone. This study will contribute to determine the future policy regarding water quality and ecosystem for the decision-driving organization.

  • Future impact of anthropogenic climate-induced change on ecological regime has been an issue and information on water temperature is required for estimating coastal aquatic environment. One way to induce water temperature is to relate water temperature to air temperature and GCM is able to provide future air temperature data to do this. However, GCM data of low spatial resolution doesn't incorporate local or sitespecific air temperature in need of application, and downscaling processes are essential. In this study, a linear regression is used to relate nationally averaged air temperature to local area for the time period of 2000-2005. The RMSE for calibration (2000-2005) is 1.584, while the RMSE for validation is 1.675 for the year 2006 and 1.448 for the year 2007. The NSC for calibration (2000-2005) is 0.962, while the NSC for validation is 0.955 for the year 2006 and 0.963 for the year 2007. The results show that the linear regression is a good tool to relate local air temperature to nationally averaged air temperature with $1.0{\sim}2.0^{\circ}C$ of RMSE. The study will contribute to estimate future impact of climate-induced change on aquatic environment in Korean coastal zone.

  • Recently, climate change around the world due to global warming has became an important issue and damages by climate change have a bad effect on human life. Changes of Sea Surface Temperature(SST) is associated with natural disaster such as Typhoon and El Nino. So we predicted daily future SST using Statistical Downscaling Method and CGCM 3.1 A1B scenario. 9 points of around Korea peninsular were selected to predict future SST and built up a regression model using Multiple Linear Regression. CGCM 3.1 was simulated with regression model, and that comparing Probability Density Function, Box-Plot, and statistical data to evaluate suitability of regression models, it was validated that regression models were built up properly.

  • A local or site-specific water temperature is downscaled from the nation-wide air temperature that represents simulation by General Circulation Model (GCM). Both two-step and one-step method are tested and compared in three sites: Masan Bay, Lake Sihwa, and Nakdong River Estuary. Two-step method uses a linear regression model as the first step that converts nation-wide air temperature into local air temperature, and the corresponding coefficient of determination is in the range of 0.98~0.99. The second step that converts air temperature into water temperature uses a nonlinear curve, so called S-curve, and the corresponding root mean squared error (RMSE) is 2.07 for rising limb in Masan Bay, 1.93 for falling limb in Masan Bay, 2.59 for Lake Sihwa, and 1.58 for Nakdong River Estuary. In a similar way, one-step method is performed to directly convert nation-wade air temperature into local water temperature, and the corresponding RMSE is 2.28 for rising limb in Masan Bay, 1.89 for falling limb in Masan Bay, 2.55 for Lake Sihwa, and 1.52 for Nakdong River Estuary. Consequently both methods show a similar level of performance, and one-step method is recommendable in that it is simple and practical in relative terms.

  • This study tried to analyze the impact of climate change on ecological habitat. In this regard, the Rhynchocypris Kumgangensis was selected among the CBIS(Climate-sensitive Biologocal Indicator Species) suggested by the Ministry of Environment. And ecological habitat and restrictive conditions for its survival was surveyed. Future runoff and water quality in the upstream of Pyungchang river were simulated by appling climate change scenarios to SWAT model which is able to simulate water quality. The estimated results explained characteristics on the increase of runoff, BOD, and water temperature and the decrease of DO in the future. The restrictive condition on ecological habitat of the Rhynchocypris Kumgangensis was used water quality during the April to May spawning season since BOD and DO were satisfactory as the first grade of water criteria in the estimated result of future water quality. As a result, it was analyzed that habitat of the Rhynchocypris Kumgangensis in the present was possible about 50~60% of the river. But the habitat would be decreased gradually in the future and would be possible in a very small part of the river in the long term.

  • From the climate change scenario experiments of 21 models participating in Coupled Climate Model Inter-comparison Project Phase 6, future changes of sea surface temperature (SST) and Kuroshio in the Northwest Pacific were analyzed. The spatial feature of SST change was found to be related to the change of the current speed and spatial distribution of Kuroshio. To investigate the relationship between the change in latitude of the Kuroshio extension region, which flows along the boundary between the subtropical gyre and the subarctic gyre in the North Pacific, and the large-scale atmospheric circulation due to global warming, the zero-windstress curl line for each climate change experiment from 9 out of 21 models were compared. As the atmospheric radiative forcing increases due to the increase of greenhouse gases, it was confirmed that the zero-windstress curl line moves northward, which is consistent with the observation. These results indicate that as the Hadley Circulation expands to the north due to global warming, the warming of the mid-latitudes to which the Korean Peninsula belongs may be accelerated. The volume transport and temperature of the Tsushima Warm Current flowing into the East Sea through the Korea Strait also increased as the atmospheric radiative forcing increased.

  • We investigated the effects of water temperature, salinity and irradiance on the growth of the harmful algae Chattonella ovata isolated from South Sea, Korea. C. ovata grew under all combinations of water temperatures and salinity, except for all the salinity conditions at the water temperature of $10^{\circ}C$, with the salinity of 7.5 psu and 10 psu at $15^{\circ}C$, and 7.5 psu at $20^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$. The maximum specific growth rate was $0.62\;day^{-1}$ at the combination of $30^{\circ}C$ and 30 psu. The results of two-way ANOVA indicated that growth rate depended greatly on the water temperatures while not being affected by interactions with the salinity. This indicates that C. ovata is a stenothermal and euryhaline organism, preferring high water temperatures. C. ovata did not grow at irradiance ${\leq}30\;{\mu}mol$ photons $m^{-2}s^{-1}$. Photoinhibition did not occur at $800\;{\mu}mol$ photons $m^{-2}s^{-1}$, which was the maximum irradiance used in this study. The irradiance-growth curve was described as $\mu$ = 0.74(I-16.0)/(I+43.9) at $30^{\circ}C$ and 30 psu. The half-saturation light intensity ($K_s$) was $75.9\;{\mu}mol$ photons $m^{-2}s^{-1}$ and compensation photon flux density ($I_c$) was $16.0\;{\mu}mol$ photons $m^{-2}s^{-1}$, especially this value was comparatively lower than those of Skeletonema costatum and other flagellates previously reported. Therefore, our results indicate that C. ovata has advantageous physiological characteristics for interspecific competition at the embayment and coastal areas of Korea in summer.
