  • Recently, leading edge companies use the Supply Chain Management as a competitive weapon to secure and maintain customer loyalty. As a consequence, they are concentrating resources on the company's core business and employing strategic alliances with third-party providers to ensure the company provides its customers' desired logistics service levels at acceptable costs. Under this circumstances, this paper surveys the third party logistics as a loading edge logistics industry coping with the progress of the supply chain management. The status and the type of the TPL including the Forwarder are analyzed in the view point of global logistics. Also, the development strategy of third party logistics in the future is suggested.

  • Logistics outsourcing businesses consist of the three main stages of bidding, contracting, and operations. This study focuses on the impacts of factors in the logistics outsourcing stages on outsourcing performance. Key factors in each stage may have direct influences on logistics partnerships and performance. Also, factors of each stage may impact the factors of subsequent stages. The relationships were examined using a structural equation model and verified by PLS (partial least square)-SEM methodology. Study results were as follows. First, the uncertainty of the shipper in the bidding phase affects the flexible contract in the contracting phase, and thus, affects the satisfaction of the logistics outsourcing services. Second, the uncertainty of the shipper in the bidding phase affects operations through contracts, and positively affects logistics outsourcing satisfaction through trust and cooperation.

  • The automotive supply chain is increasingly complex as automakers seek more profitable solutions with global out-sourcing and manufacturing strategies. In the automotive industry, using returnable plastic containers (RPCs) is very common for domestic operations, but for internationally, it has not been considered by many companies because of issues such as overall distance and difficulty of control. The results of this simulation can help to analyze the interactive and coherent behavior of packaging and supply chain systems. The data obtained from the model can be applied to make substantial decisions for choosing the most profitable packaging types, at the same time as it can lead to designing an optimum supply chain for RPCs used in international supply chains.

  • The third party logistics(3PL) is generally understood as the logistics activities providing a comprehensive logistics services, all or partly outsourced by the customers on a larger term contract basis, ranging from making logistics strategies to implementing information technology services. A lot of companies in advanced countries such as the U.S.A. or some of the European countries have actively outsourced to logistics service providers in efforts to increase the efficiencies in logistics operation rather than doing themselves. In light of these environments, outsourcing to third parties has become a strategic issue demanding greater attention in corporate boardrooms. First, after deciding their logistics outsourcing, the companies have to set up their aims of 3PL through the development of logistical strategies. Second, the companies must decide service provider that fits to their business environment and conditions. As it is reported that 3PL services will bring a high rate of return and its potential will be more signigicant, providers and users of 3PL services and government ministry should prepare the way of improvement of logistics institution and plan to activate 3PL services to reach the advanced foreign countries level.

  • As the logistics management becomes more important with the enormous amount of competition at every level of apparel retailing, the Korean apparel companies are expanding logistics outsourcing for providing to consumers better service. This paper studied about apparel logistics service quality, focusing on the transport part. The results of this study showed that the apparel companies evaluated highly their logistics outsourcing service quality that provided from the logistics companies. The logistics companies were providing high quality logistics service to the apparel companies with relatively advanced service infrastructures such as transportation management system and logistics network, as well as improved service abilities such as exact transport and relationship management. Also, it was identified that the satisfaction with apparel transport service quality gave positive influence on recontract intention toward the logistics companies.

  • Reverse logistics (RL) covering the flow of products/parts in a reverse direction from product returns to product disposal. Companies are faced with a decision on whether to manage RL in house or to outsource it to a RL third party service provider (3PSP). A survey was conducted in 2004 to study RL outsourcing practices. Through the survey, various RL functions outsourced in industry are identified, and the factors considered to decide between in-house vs. outsourcing RL management are studied along with their importance. In addition, this research presents the performance measures of a 3PSP and problems faced by companies while managing RL in-house and outsourcing.

  • Although the outsourcing of logistics is one of the most widely discussed contemporary topics in the field of business logistics, efforts to organize them in an integrated broad-based body of knowledge have so far been rather limited. In order to develop and implement the outsourcing of logistics effectively and efficiently, this paper presents the procedure for establishment of outsourcing logistics systems. Several case studies including 7 firms from X Group in glass manufacturing industry and 1 firm from Y Group in chemical industry, respectively are introduced to determine the benefits of outsourcing according to some criteria, such as performance evaluation of before-outsourcing and after-outsourcing logistics.
