  • Since second half of 1990s, Korean "Han-Ryu" focuses international attention, which means Korean cultural industries increase their exports. However, traditional theories of international trade in cultural industries could not explain this phenomenon of increasing cultural goods from developing countries. Using the fact that Becker(1996)'s 'consumption capital' can increase productivity in cultural industries as well as contribute to form 'taste' for new cultural goods. This study suggests the proper conditions for catching-up of developing countries in cultural industries through comparative statistics.

  • This study explores how married migrant women in Korea create social capital in their everyday lives, and how their social capital influences cultural acculturation. This study performs a structural equation model, using two-year data of female migrant women. The results suggest that network elements, including official supports from public organizations and unofficial supports from personal ties, contribute to creation of perceptual elements, including social trust, community involvement and relations. Also, these two elements of social capital have positive impact on acculturation of married migrant women in Korea. The longitudinal analysis provides a basic understanding of the creation of social capital and the relationship between social capital and acculturation of married migrant women and also clearly suggests the importance of public supports rather than personal supports from family or friends.

  • In this study, we will examine that the social class is reproduced by the school curriculum from the viewpoint of cultural reproduction theory by Pierre Bourdieu. Specially, we will examine the sociality of the curriculum, the social control of cultural capital, and how these make class reproduction possible. This means that the school curriculum has social character and is closely related to the cultural capital of the ruling class.

  • Given the growing changes in media environment and cultural consumption, globally popular contents of Korean Wave(Hallyu) has also been transformed in its forms and genres. Moreover, extant research on Hallyu has focused on any single respective genre, mostly on East-Asian countries, or studied from Korea-centered perspective. This study examined the social capital effect of Korean Wave in users' own counties, especially in non-English European societies. Survey analysis results reveal that both narrative and non-narrative contents in Hallyu had negative impact on social trust and trust toward people of their own country, whereas positive effect on trust toward Koreans. In contrast, K-pop Hallyu showed positive effect on all types of social trust toward their own country and Koreans, as well as on social participation and bridging/bonding social networks.

  • This paper intends to find the determinants of the occupational aspirations of college students in Korea. According to Wisconsin model, the occupational aspiration of youth has a statistically significant influence on his or her actual education level and occupation choice implying that the more motivated with high-level occupational aspiration will obtain the higher level of occupation. The analysis for this study is based on the survey of undergraduate students' perception, attitude and lifestyle in Korea 2004, which was conducted against 1,947 respondents, and multiple regression model was utilized. The dependent variable for occupational aspirations was measured by the Standard International Occupational Prestige Scale (SIOPS) of Donald J. Treiman. Independent variables include social capital and cultural capital as well as demographic variables, socio-economic status, and human capital variables. Social capital variable was measured by the position generator scale of Nan Lin and Mary Dumin, and cultural capital variable was done to our original index. This study shows that social and cultural capitals are factors having significant influence on occupational aspiration, in addition to the well-known factors such as gender, human capital and the occupation of father.

  • This study aims to analyze the determinants of culture and art consumption of one person households using 「2019 National Art and Culture Activity Survey」. Based on previous research, cultural and economic capital, health perception, and residence were selected as independent variables, and 1,755 single household data on cultural attendance, art education, and demographics were extracted to analyze the relationships. Zero-inflated negative binomial model was employed as cultural attendance variable includes many zeros. It was found that education has a significant impact on cultural attendance possibility and frequency. However, art education in childhood, income, health perception, and residence were found to have selective effects, and unique characteristics of single households influences the findings. This study contributes to developing relevant research by focusing on the single households and provides implications to boost cultural consumption. Finally, directions for future research, such as considering psychographic variables, were suggested.
