The Effects of Multicultural Experience on Empathy in Adolescents: Focused on Mediating Effect of Multicultural Acceptance and Cultural Empathy (청소년의 다문화경험이 공감능력에 미치는 영향: 다문화수용성과 문화적 공감의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among multicultural experience, multicultural acceptance, cultural empathy, and empathy in adolescents. Moreover, the study attempted to reveal that how multicultural experience had an effect on empathy and whether multicultural acceptance and cultural empathy had an indirect effect. Based on previous researches, a study model was established. Data were collected and analyzed from 266 adolescents. The results were as follows. There was positive correlation between main variables and adolescents' multicultural experience had an effect on empathy via the path of mediating multicultural acceptance and cultural empathy. Therefore, it was suggested to develop programs which improve multicultural acceptance and cultural empathy. However, they should be offered differentially and implemented sustainedly in stages.

Influence of Multicultural contact Experience and Ethnocultural Empathy on Multicultural acceptance among Nursing Students. (간호대학생의 다문화접촉경험과 문화적 공감이 다문화수용성에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of multicultural contact experience and ethnocultural empathy on multicultural acceptance in nursing students. Participants were nursing students in 3 universities in C city and data were collected from November 15 to December 20, 2017. Data were analyzed by t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, multiple regression analysis using SPSS Win 23.0. It was found that: (a) multicultural acceptability had a positive correlation with emotional empathy(r=.56, <.001), cognitive empathy(r=.40, <.001), and experience of multicultural contact(r=.16, p=.040; (b) factors influencing multicultural acceptance were emotional empathy and cognitive empathy with 37.3% explanatory power. This study shows that emotional and cognitive empathy have positive effect on multicultural acceptance. This result may be useful in developing new strategies for enhancing multicultural acceptance.

The Effects of Humanistic Knowledge and Empathy Ability on Cultural Competence of Nursing students (인문학적 소양과 공감능력이 간호대학생의 문화적 역량에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted in order to examine the effects of humanistic knowledge and empathy ability on cultural competence of nursing students. A convenience sample of 250 nursing students were recruited. The average scores were 2.50 for humanistic knowledge, 3.40 for empathy ability, and 3.33 for cultural competence. Humanistic knowledge had positive correlation with cultural competence. Also, the empathy ability was positively correlated with humanistic knowledge and cultural competence. Finally, cultural competence, empathy ability and level of academic score have shown to influence cultural competence. The research founds that humanistic knowledge, empathy ability and level of academic score influenced cultural competence of nursing students. Therefore, this study provides the basic information for improving the curriculum and quality of nursing for nursing students' cultural competency enhancement.

The Effect of Cultural Empathy and Personality on Cultural Competence among Occupational Therapy Students (문화적 공감태도와 성격특성이 작업치료 전공 학생의 문화적 역량에 미치는 영향)

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of cultural empathy, and personalities on cultural competence among university students of occupational therapy. Methods : One-hundred and fifty-five university students of occupational therapy in Jeollanamdo and Gwangju completed questionnaires consisting of a demographic questionnaire, the Scale of Ethnocultural Empathy(SEE), Big Fie Inventory(BFI), and (CCAI). To determine the relationships among demographic variables, cultural empathy, personalities, and cultural competence, descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, and regression analysis were analyzed by using SPSS 24.0 for Windows. Results : The results of the study showed the differences in neuroticism and conscientiousness by gender. Also, there were positive correlations between cultural empathy, personality, and cultural competence. Lastly, cultural empathy(β=.357), openness(β=.252), and school year(β=-.148)were significant predictors of cultural competence. Conclusion : The results of this study clarified the relationships among cultural empathy, personality, and cultural competence, and will provide data for the education program to enhance the cultural competence of undergraduates of occupational therapy.

The Influence of Empathy and Communicative Competence on Cultural Competence in Nursing Students (간호대학생의 공감능력과 의사소통능력이 문화적 역량에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between empathy, communicative competence, and cultural competence among nursing students and investigate the factors influencing cultural competence. The subjects of the study consisted of 173 nursing students. Data were analyzed based on Pearson's correlations, and multiple regressions using the SPSS 18.0 program. The mean value of cultural competence was 3.44, showing significant positive correlations with empathy(r=.450, p<.001) and communicative competence(r=.579, p<.001) in nursing students. Empathy, communicative competence and foreign language skill accounted for 37.1% of the total variance in cultural competence among nursing students. Overall cultural competence can be improved by empathy, communicative competence enhancement program.

  • This study analyzed the influence of cultural empathy and analysis on the cultural sensitivity and understanding of multicultural education and the relationship between the attitudes and cultural empathy and understanding of multicultural education and the multicultural sensibility and attitudes of pre-service early childhood teachers. We conducted a survey on cultural sensitivity, multicultural education and understanding attitude among Early Childhood Education College and enrolled 165 infants with pre teachers in pre-service early childhood teachers who are able to sympathize with cultural areas of the Y. The data were subjected to Pearson correlation analysis with multiple regression analysis performed using the SPSS 21.0 program. From the data analysis, first, cultural empathy and multicultural sensitivity showed a significant positive correlation with understanding and attitudes of multicultural education pre-service early childhood teachers. Second, cultural empathy of the pre-service early childhood teachers was a significant variable for predicting the susceptibility multicultural, multicultural education and understanding attitude. Since cultural empathy can change according to various factors, future investigation of these factors is needed to increase the cultural sensitivity of pre-service early childhood teachers by conducting follow-up studies that apply these findings to educational programs. Cultural empathy shouldn't be limited to multicultural education or simply a means to access the field of experiencing the arts, but should be expanded to include research in teaching and learning on how cultural empathy can be applied to the overall educational curriculum.

Empathy and Cultural Competence of College Female Students Majoring in Aviation and Tourism Service (항공 및 관광서비스 전공 여대생의 공감능력, 문화적 역량에 관한 연구)

  • This study is intended to check the empathy and cultural competence of female college students majoring in aviation and tourism service. The number of study subjects was 274. And the descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, and pearson correlation coefficient of data was analyzed through SPSS 20.0. According to the results of study, an average mark of empathy was $3.72{\pm}0.35$, and an average mark of cultural competence was $3.48{\pm}0.47$. When the level of difference in empathy and cultural competence was examined according to the general characteristics, the level of empathy showed a significant difference in the purpose of visiting foreign countries and foreign language skills. And the level of cultural competence showed a significant difference in religion, foreign language skills, foreign friend, experience in international exchange, experience in cultural education abroad, a method of cultural education abroad, and a necessity for cultural education abroad. With regard to correlation, there was a positive correlation between empathy and cultural competence(r=.425, p<.001). And in case of sub-attribute, it was shown that the cognitive factor and emotional factor of empathy has a positive correlation with cultural competence. It was verified that an education plan making it possible to improve cultural competence is required by checking a mutual relationship between empathy and cultural competence through these study results.

Awareness of Contents Scene as a Cultural Empathy of Cities: A case of 'Contents Tourism' (도시의 문화적 공감대로서 콘텐츠씬의 인식: 콘텐츠 투어리즘 사례를 중심으로)

  • Empathy is the ability to feel, understand, and respond to the emotions of others from the standpoint of others. Recently, 'sympathy' has emerged as an important issue not only in emotional empathy in relation to individuals but also in 'social empathy', which sees sympathy as a basic principle for maintaining society. This study focuses on the issue of empathy as a new driving force for modern society and focused on 'urban scene' as a spatial application for cultural empathy in the city. Urban scenes approach the city as a space of consumption, classify it according to its inherent attributes, and analyze its characteristics. This study approaches the existing urban scene theory in terms of empathy. In addition, as a way to consume city images reflected on contents, a concrete example of 'contents tourism'is examined, and a 'contents scene' is proposed as a new urban scene and its meaning and possibility are presented.

The Influence of Compassion Fatigue, Compassion Satisfaction and Nursing Organizational Culture on Burnout in Integrated Nursing Care Units Nurses (간호·간병 통합서비스 병동 간호사의 공감피로, 공감만족 및 간호조직문화가 소진에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the influence of compassion fatigue, compassion satisfaction and nursing organizational culture on burnout in integrated nursing care units nurses. The participants were 170 nurses working in integrated nursing care units of three general hospitals located in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. Data were analyzed using independent t-test, ANOVA, Scheffé, Pearson's correlation and stepwise multiple regression analysis. Burnout was significantly different according to turnover intention, job satisfaction, health status. Burnout showed a positive correlation with compassion fatigue and a negative correlation with compassion satisfaction and relation oriented culture. Regression analysis revealed that compassion fatigue, compassion satisfaction, relation oriented culture and age were significant variables affecting the burnout, and the lower the age, the higher the burnout. Therefore, strategies to decrease compassion fatigue and to enhance compassion satisfaction and positive aspects of relation oriented culture for lower age nurses group are needed.

Collectivism's Effect on Volunteerism, A Case Study of Japanese employees (일본의 집단문화의 봉사정신의 관계: 글로벌 IT기업 직원 중심으로)

  • In this research, Collectivism's influence on Japanese employee's volunteerism in IT Multinational Enterpise (MNE) was investigated with empathy mediating. Previous research on Hofstede's cultural dimensions were mostly conducted at national levels. However, in this study, Yoo's Cultural value Scale (CVSCALE) was used to analyze colletivistic tenedencies at individual levels and its influence on volunteerism. A total of 220 self-administering online surveys were distributed to IT MNE employees in Tokyo, Japan for three weeks period. 160 usable surveys were collected and analyzed with SPSS 21.0. Findings indicate collectivism positively influenced volunteerism in individuals with empathy as possible antecent of volunteerism. In conclusion and application, the significance of this research lies in indicating collectivism's positive influence on volunteerism and empathy as possible antecedents of volunteerism in Japanese employees even though Japan has displayed stronger individualism than the rest of East Asian neighbors.
