  • The collection of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, features a sansu folding screen that was created in 1940 to commemorate the sixtieth birthday of Soseok Kang Jin-Koo. It was created by six oriental painters, who were among the ten best painters in that era. The folding screen has been previously repaired and restored; however, owing to damage such as twisting of its wooden frame, abrasion, and moisture stains, rigorous conservation treatment is required. Hence, scientific research was conducted to analyze the textile, paper and pigments employed while creating the folding screen, to identify the associated material properties. Results showed that the textile used in the screen's picture and janghwang comprise synthetic fibers and natural fibers such as cotton and silk. Various types of papers were used in the folding screen, such as those from mulberry, herbaceous, and coniferous fibers. Furthermore, calcite deposits were found on the base of every picture, and certain colors employed by the artists appear to be produced from different pigments.

  • In this study, metal properties were compared by preparingthree iron knives from steel ingots produced via traditional iron-making, and ingot which jointed the steel of modern times. Metal microscope and SEM-EDS analysis revealed fine ferrite and pearlite structures of the hypo-eutectoid steel of Fe-C alloys. All samples also exhibited martensite on the blade of the knife. By Vicker's hardness analysis, the hardness of the sand iron knife (K1) was 533.38 HV, sand iron-nickel steel knife (K3) was 514.8 HV, and sand iron-carbon steel knife (K2) was 477.02 HV. The mass reduction due to wear was 0.058% for K1, 0.059% for K3, and 0.144% for K2. EPMA(Electron probe micro-analyzer) analysis of the surface pattern of the specimens confirmed that the patterns were exposed due to differences in the content of C or the chemical composition. Additional research on heat treatment processes is needed to increase the abrasion resistance of blades. Traditional steel ingots could produce high-quality steel if combined with nickel steel.

  • This study focused on analyzing solid brown cosmetic residues that were excavated from the tomb of the Hwahyeop princess. The cosmetics had been buried in 1752 in Cheonghwa Baekja (small porcelain jars) within a Huigwakham (a stone box sealed with lime). A literature search and chemical analyses of the relics were conducted at the National Palace Museum of Korea. Based on the results of these analyses, raw materials and manufacturing methods for reproduction of the cosmetic were selected and then cream-form cosmetics were prepared. Aging tests using heat, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and CO2 were carried out to emulate the deterioration of the excavated cosmetics. Further chemical analyses and functionality tests were performed to evaluate changes from the tests and the effect as a cosmetic. As heat aging progressed, among the reproduced cosmetics, the one which has a high proposition of oil showed a color difference value of 32; the oxidation of oils involved chemical changes in O-H and C=C groups. As the cosmetic cream deteriorated under UV aging, the pH value became acidic. The result of the functional coverage test of the reproduced cosmetic cream was lower than the standard coverage ratio of modern cosmetics.

  • We observed changes in the properties of the glaze layer according to the content of iron oxide and inferred the composition, content, and environment of the materials used in the past during the production process of black ware. First, experiments were conducted using different ratios of iron oxide, feldspar, calcite, and ash at different temperatures and firing environments; the characteristics of glaze were classified into five groups in the oxidation environment. Different properties were identified in the reducing environment above 1200℃. The crystal identified in the experiment was similar to the glaze characteristics in the excavated black ware. The crystal phase appeared in four groups: band shape, circular, arborescent phase, and needle crystal, depending on the change in the content of iron oxide. However, the difference in crystals did not appear significantly at high temperatures. In addition, crystals of glaze were divided into two groups depending on the component ratio. The presence or absence of feldspar is thought to affect crystallinity and amorphous iron oxide and the changes in the glaze layer changed substantially depending on the amount of iron oxide. In particular, it was confirmed that the aspects of iron oxide in the oxidation and reduction environments were different and, therefore, crystallization due to the firing environment also affected the optical characteristics.

  • This study discusses the architectural space's phenomenology, focusing on the physical environment and psychological behavior. Kim, Ju-Tae House, which is divided by special relationship, was analyzed by method of constructing space, and behavioral meaning with the perspective of visual structure. Kim, Ju-Tae House was constructed in a clear way by reflecting the users social, and cultural relationship. It has a relational and independent territories by physically surrounding Chae and wall. Each independent limited space is suggesting the space being opened by accessing the space stage by stage. This method of constructing the space makes the user aware of the relative difference from the induced space experience, and recognize the incremental strong isolation. Between the yard, which is located in the center of the house, forms a three-dimensional layer between Sarangchae and Anchae, emphasizing the spacial depth. The physical space is relatively small but because of the environmental conditions, such as the positioning of the observer's perspective, short cycle reorientation, and overlapped layer, it is recognized as far or deep compared to the actual size. This is the relative method as a visual perspective that is intended, and is understood as an active element that induces the psychological attitude by the recognized environment affordability of the user.

  • Lentils (Lens culinaris) are a nutritious and popular food throughout the world. This review provides an overview of the nutritional and functional properties of lentils. Lentils have high nutritional value: high protein, high fiber, low fat, and a variety of minerals. The addition of lentils to other foods could enhance their health benefits. Additionally, there is no decrease in the amino acid content in lentils when cooked; rather, the amino acids increased and the phytic acids decreased. Lentils are generally known to have biomedical functions including antioxidative, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, and thrombolytic properties. The data presented here show that fermentation would increase the amount of bioactive substances in the beans. Therefore, fermentation techniques could be a new approach to produce lentil-based foods. They are also eco-friendly, cost-effective, and feasible processes. This review has suggested a future development of new lentil-related foods using traditional fermentation technology.

  • This study deals with the visual quality in the future urban landscape and architectural environment, and as such, aims to identify a scientific and objective aesthetic and visual quality from the perspective of empirical aesthetics. The empirical aesthetics provides a framework that can be utilized in understanding human perception, consciousness, and behavior and a way to categorize the visual quality and to explain and predict its effect. The study examines various theories on environmental perception, cognition, and some new approaches to environmental aesthetics, and tries to present aesthetic properties that can be applied to environmental design. First, the aesthetic experience in visual perception can be defined as a combined effect of psychobiological properties and human activity, i.e. an interaction between the formal and symbolic signs in environment and the conceptual framework of man. The effect of visual quality differs and varies a great deal, depending on the sociocultural, personal and collective value system, so it is hard to define it in absolute terms. Second, the impact of visual quality and its aesthetic effect has to do with pleasure, preference, the aptitude for survival, and self regulation. Third, aesthetics is one of the areas that can benefit a great deal from an interdisciplinary approach. and an empirical study such as this can be used as a basis for design, planning, and evaluation.

  • What sports have in common is that they must use their bodies to play and lead to victory. The use of the body differs in many ways depending on the event, which part should be used as the focus. The commonality of all sports is that sports can achieve the best results by using and using parts of the body in harmony. The use of strength or muscles varies depending on the type of sport or the type of sport, so the use of the body or the results of athletic events also varies. Sports are premised on the organic use of the body, but the implications of sports can be found in that the degree of organic use does not apply equally to all sports. Sports demand organic balance and flexibility. Depending on the type of sport, you can explore which organic harmony produces more effective effects and find out which events are more beneficial to the human body. This study aimed to find out whether the organic harmony of the body actively contributes to the development of sports and a healthy mental culture. In this study, we proposed the hypothesis that the modern Pentathlon will induce the most desirable organic harmony as a global Olympic sport, and tried to verify that the hypothesis is valid and verifiable. In order to do this study, I tried to find out the organic viewpoints centered on the Miletos school, re-examine the meaning of the modern Pentathlon of games as an Olympic event, and conduct organic harmony and exploration of the modern Pentathlon of games in terms of sports.
