  • This study was conducted to review the literature and examine the factors related to problem behaviors among students of multicultural families in Korea. A systematic review of the literature was conducted using domestic documents retrieved through July 4, 2018 based on online searches of domestic databases (the Research Information Sharing Service, Korean Studies Information Service System and the National Diet Library). A total of 2,084 studies were searched, and 21 studies were used for analysis. The factors related to problem behaviors were related to individual factors (gender, school record, self-esteem, etc.), family factors (family type, parent support, mothers' enculturation stress, etc.) and environmental factors (friend support, teacher support, social support). The variables measured the problem behaviors among students of multicultural families were school life adjustment (10), psychological, social adjustment or maladjustment (4), and emotional problem behavior (3). Overall, the results indicate that social and policy efforts are needed to improve individual, family, and environmental factors based on more specific and consistent theoretical definitions related to problem behaviors among students of multicultural families in Korea.

The results were as follows: First, young children's temperament were found to affect young children's problem behaviors directly and indirectly though teacher-child relationship. 'Negative emotionality' and 'attention span/persistence' temperament were found to be important for externalizing problem behaviors, and 'activity level' temperament to be important for internalizing problem behaviors. Second, teacher-child relationship was found to affect young children's problem behaviors directly and to mediate between young children's temperament and problem behaviors. Additionally teacher-child conflict relationship was found to be the most important variable predicting young children's externalizing and internalizing problem behaviors.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the structural relationships between preschooler's temperament, externalizing behavior problems and mother's parenting competency. The 5th Panel Study of Korean Children by Korea Institute of Child Care and Education were analyzed in this study by using the structural model. The major findings are as follows, First, preschoolers' emotionality temperament were found to have a negative effect on mothers' parenting competency. Preschoolers' activity and sociability temperament had a positive influence on mothers' parenting competency. Second, preschoolers's emotionality temperament also had a direct impact on their externalizing problems behavior, otherwise preschoolers's activity and sociability temperament were unrelated to that. Third, mothers' parenting competency had a negative influence on preschoolers' externalizing problems behavior. Finally, mothers' parenting competency had mediating effects between preschoolers' temperament and their externalizing problems behavior. These findings suggest that parental education should be concerned about parenting competency based on the understanding of preschooler's temperament.

In addition, the mediating effect of anger thought in relation to perfectionism and problem behaviors was investigated. Methods: Data were collected from 807 students in a girls' high school, and descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and hierachical multiple regression were used with SPSS/PC 18.0 program to analyze the data. Results: There were significant differences in anger thought (primary and secondary anger-thought) and problem behaviors between the upper 25% and lower 25% group for perfectionism. Primary and secondary anger-thought had a significant mediating effect in relation to perfectionism and problem behaviors. Conclusion: For effective management and prevention of adolescent women's problem behaviors, programs including perfectionism and anger thought should be developed. Further research is necessary in order to draw a consensus on cognitive factors as mediators between the related factors of problem behaviors.

The summaries of the results of the study are as seen below. First, the child's gender and mother's education were statistically significant variables in explaining the variance in problem behavior of young children. More boys than girls showed more problem behaviors and children of mothers who graduated university showed less problem behavior. Second, teacher-child relationship was the most predictive variable in problem behavior of young children. Children who had good relationships with their teachers showed less problem behavior and children who had poor relationships with their teachers showed more problem behavior. The results of this study can provide basic data for consulting and developing program to prevent and treat the problem behavior of young children to consider the development of children.

The study also indicates that as youths have higher self-esteem their behavior problem levels are reduced. Secondly, by examining the relationships of youth's psychological anxiety and appearance-oriented attitude based on their self-esteem, the self-esteem gives a positive mediated effect on psychological anxiety and behavior problem whereas the self-esteem affects as negative mediated effect on the appearance-oriented attitude and behavior problem. Lastly, the study indicates there is a causal interaction between youth's appearance-oriented attitude and behavior problem which differs by genders and different school classes. Based on the results of the research, the theoretical and practical applications were suggested to prevent and relax the adolescent's behavior problems.

  • Among many other factors associated with anger expressions and problem behaviors, the effect of temperament has not been much investigated in adolescents. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between temperament and problem behaviors in adolescents, and whether dysfunctional anger expressions mediated this relation. A total of 360 students in either middle or high school participated but only data from 354 surveys were analyzed. We found that temperament was associated with dysfunctional anger expressions and problem behaviors, and the relationship between temperament and problem behaviors was mediated by dysfunctional anger expressions. Temperament adaptability was shown to be negatively related with dysfunctional anger expressions and problem behaviors, while temperament approach was shown to be positively related with anger-out expression and externalized problem behaviors. This study suggests that appropriate intervention of anger related issues in adolescents considering their temperament should is needed.
