  • Increasing the problem solving power in school mathematics is the most important task of mathematics education. It is the ultimate goal of mathematics education to help students develop their thinking and creativity and help solve problems that arise in the real world. In this study, we investigated the contents of problem solving according to mathematics curriculum goals from the first curriculum to current curriculum in Korea. This study analyzed the problem-solving contents of the mathematics textbooks reflecting the achievement criteria of the revised curriculum in 2015. As a result, it was the first curriculum to use the terminology of problem solving in the mathematics goal of Korea's curriculum. Interest in problem solving was most actively pursued in the 6th and 7th curriculum and the 2006 revision curriculum. After that, it was neglected to be reflected in textbooks since the 2009 revision curriculum, We have identified the problems of this problem-solving instruction and suggested improvement direction.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify characteristics which are related with design problem solving. For this, an effective problem solver and an ineffective problem solver have been compared and analyzed in terms of the process of design problem solving with a population of students who are enrolled in College of Engineering. This study can be concluded as follows. First, the process of design problem solving was performed in non-linear form and it was varied depending on individuals. Second, the results of problem solving could be varied according to the qualitative level of performance in each stage rather than according to the differences of consumption time by each stage. Third, the main activities in process of design problem solving were identifying a design brief, identifying requirements, exploring a problem solution, and idea modeling. Fourth, the making activities took place most frequently and the longest time in the entire process, meanwhile exploring a problem solution was related to the results of design problem solving.

  • The main purpose of STEM education is to understand methods of inquiry in each discipline to develop convergent problem solving skills. To do this, we must first understand the problem-solving process that is regarded as an essential component of each discipline. The purposes of this study is to understand the relationship between the problem solving in science (S), engineering (E), mathematics (M), and computational thinking (CT) based on the comparative analysis of problem solving processes in each SEM discipline. To do so, first, the problem solving process of each SEM and CT discipline is compared and analyzed, and their commonalities and differences are described. Next, we divided the CT into the instrumental and thinking skill aspects and describe how CT's problem solving process differs from SEM's. Finally we suggest a model to explain the relationship between SEM and CT problem solving process. This study shows how SEM and CT can be converged as a problem solving process.

  • This study is to investigate student's processes of problem solving using open-ended Geometric problems to understand student's thinking and behavior. One 8th grader participated in performing her learning in 5 lessons for June in 2006. The result of the study was documented according to Polya's four problem solving stages as follows: First, the student tended to neglect the stage of "understanding" a problem in the beginning. However, the student was observed to make it simplify and relate to what she had teamed previously Second, "devising a plan" was not simply done. She attempted to solve the open-ended problems with more various ways and became to have the metacognitive knowledge, leading her to think back and correct her errors of solving a problem. Third, in process of "carrying out" the plan she controled her solving a problem to become a better solver based on failure of solving a problem. Fourth, she recognized the necessity of "looking back" stage through the open ended problems which led her to apply and generalize mathematical problems to the real life. In conclusion, it was found that the student enjoyed her solving with enthusiasm, building mathematical belief systems with challenging spirit and developing mathematical power.

  • The purpose of this study is to reconsider of teaching mathematics problem solving in Korea's elementary school through an analysis of mathematics curricula and mathematics textbooks of the elementary school. As a result, it is found that the problem solving had been emphasized continually from the 4th curriculum to the 2009 revised curriculum. However, contents in their textbooks did not reflect the intent of the mathematics curricula properly. And amount of contents related to teaching about problem solving in the textbooks reached the peak in the 6th mathematics curriculum. Then teaching about problem solving had been weakened gradually. And it is also revealed that there had been a movement to change to teaching for problem solving in the textbooks of the 2007 and 2009 revised curricula. Teaching via problem solving had not been carried out appropriately so far.

  • Informatics curriculum has been revised for informatics principles and concepts to effectively teach. According to the revised curriculum, researches are verifying the educational effects of algorithmic thinking and problem-solving abilities using programming language by applying it to various area. However, researches in programming education considering the level of student are yet incomplete. This research has analyzed the impact of the perceived level of problem solving on the performance of project completeness. As results of difference of project completeness, a high perceived level of problem solving group's performance of project completeness was higher than a low perceived level of problem solving group's one. Analysis of the impact of the perceived level of problem solving on the performance of project completeness, 'problem finding' factor had a significant impact. This research suggested the importance of 'problem finding' and self-reflecting introspective 'reviewing' stages in problem solving process using programming language.abstract of your study in English.
