  • A volume integral equation method (VIEM) is used to calculate the plane elastostatic field in an isotropic elastic half-plane containing multiple isotropic or anisotropic inclusions subject to remote loading. A detailed analysis of stress field at the interface between the matrix and the central inclusion in the first column of square packing is carried out for different values of the distance between the center of the central inclusion in the first column of square packing of inclusions and the traction-free surface boundary in an isotropic elastic half-plane containing multiple isotropic or anisotropic inclusions. The method is shown to be very accurate and effective for investigating the local stresses in an isotropic elastic half-plane containing multiple isotropic or anisotropic inclusions.

  • In this paper, numerical scattering analysis for submerged scatterers is performed using finite and infinite elements. Unbounded domain is truncated into finite domain and finite elements are used in the domain. Infinite elements, So called Infinite Wave Envelope Elements (IWEE) which possess wave-like behavior, are used to take into account the infinite domain on the truncated boundary Scattering from rigid sphere is taken as an example and the effects of the order and mesh size of finite elements, size of finite element model and the order of IWEE are investigated. Quadratic finite element, refined mesh and higher order IWEE are recommended to improve the non-reflection boundary condition in the numerical scattering analysis.

  • Variation of seismic wave field in a multi-layered attenuating elastic half space is studied by the propagator matrix method and point source models of which fault-slip functions are defined as ramp functions. In this paper, the earth is modeled as being composed of horizontally stratified layers, with uniform material properties for each layer. The partial differential equations for the seismic motion in each layer are solved using a Fourier Hankel transform approach. Time histories and frequency contents of accelerations and displacements due to a vertical dip-slip and strike-slip point source located in the underlain half space are calculated at the layer interfaces using the developed programs and their characteristics are represented.

  • The boundary element analysis has been attempted for investigating the singular stress at the interface edge of infinitely layered structure. The subdomain technique has been employed and the analysis model has been divided into two subdomains, which are respectively homogeneous elastic zones. The boundary element equation has been formulated using the equilibrium and continuity conditions at the common interface. The numerical results of example problem has been presented.

  • A procedure which may be useful in dealing with problems of half plane is considered. Boundary elements are combined with nonlinear finite elements to facilitate their merits. Boundary elements for semi-infinite region are composed using the Melan's solution for half plane. Nonlinear finite elements are used to model irregularity or nonhomogeneity of elasto-plastic materials, which is usual in underground structures. In order to verify the procedure, a shallow tunnel under internal pressure is analysed using the nonlinear finite element method and combined method. It is shown that the developed procedure is accurate enough compared with other method.
