  • The Pump/Motor Selection Program for optimized selection of regional water supply facilities was developed based on a flowchart compiled from basic operational data, total head requirement, initial pump/motor specification selection etc.. This program was developed in Visual Basic. The program accepts, as in the flowchart, operational requirements of pumps and other system requirements and calculates specific speed based on flow rate, total head and na Then the calculated specific speed is used to select pump types and rpm Prior to determining likelihood of cavitation occurring at the calculated NPSH. Power requirement is then calculated for safe operation of pump to assist final pump selection. Test results of the program matches very closely to the design values of Paldang intake pump station(3rd stage) proving that the program can be used as an effective and practical aid for designing new regional water supply systems.

  • The spindle is the main component in machine tools. The static and dynamic characteristics of the spindle directly affect the machining accuracy of workpieces. The characteristics of the spindle depend on the shaft size, bearing span, built-in motor location, and so on. Therefore, the appropriate selection of these parameters is important to improve the spindle characteristics. This paper presents the analysis of the static and dynamic characteristics and optimization design of a 40,000-rpm high-speed spindle. Statistical analysis for optimization and finite element analysis were performed. This study uses the response surface method to optimize the objective function and design factors. The targets are the natural frequency and displacement. The design factors are the shaft length, shaft diameter, bearing span, and motor location. The optimized design provides better results than the initial model, and these results are expected to improve the static and dynamic characteristics of the spindle.

  • In this study, optimal design of direct-drive VCMs (Voice Coil Motor) for a missile fin actuator is carried out. The torque performance and the characteristics of the VCM are predicted by commercial electromagnetic analysis software, ANSYS Maxwell. The optimal design is obtained at the minimum and maximum actuating angles where the aerodynamic load acting on the fin is the largest in the operating range. The critical variables of the actuator is designed and the RSM (Response Surface Method) is used for the optimization. The response surface model consists of second-order functions and its experimental points are selected by a central composite design. This design is widely used for fitting a second-order response surface. The adjustment regression coefficients is computed for adequacy checking of the response surface model. Finally, the torque values obtained by the RSM and the ANSYS Maxwell are shown in good agreement.

  • For drones to be used for industrial or agricultural applications, it is necessary to increase the payload and endurance. Currently, the payload and endurance are limited by the battery technology for electric powered drones. In addition, charging or replacing the batteries may not be a practical solution at the field that requires near continuous operation. In this paper, a procedure to optimize the power system of an electric hybrid drone that consists of an internal combustion engine, a generator, a battery, and electric motors is presented. The example drone for crop dusting is sized for easy transportation with a maximum takeoff weight of 200 kg. The two main rotors that are mechanically connected to the internal combustion engine provides most of the lift. The drone is controled by four electric motors that are driven by the generator. By analyzing the flow of the energy, a methodology to select the optimum propeller and motor among the commercially available models is described. Then, a procedure of finding the optimum operational condition along with the proper gear reduction ratios for the internal combustion engine based on the test data is presented.

  • In this study, a basic durability assessment was performed by selecting the main part of a trial product of a shale shaker, which is one of components for a mud circular system. For a preliminary durability assessment, it was assumed that the lifetime of the bearing for the vibrator motor and the stiffness of the support spring are affected by the vibration when the motor operates continuously. In the case of the motor, the initial p-p level was 0.72 g, but after 100 hours of operation, the p-p level was rapidly increased to 1.26 g. Bearing defects could be estimated through ball defect frequency analysis. In the case of the spring, the stiffness of the spring was reduced by approximately 3.78% at the end of 2,000 hours of the fatigue-durability test by applying excitation conditions to shale shaker body. In the future, we will analyze the influence of the particle removal efficiency of the shale shaker.

  • Engine test as well as unload test of starting motor itself was performed to evaluate the braking characteristics of starting system used for initial spin-up of gas turbine for power generation. Through the experimental evaluation of the braking performance with the capacity of braking resistor of the starting motor, we have achieved quantitative data to secure robust braking characteristics in emergency during the starting period of the gas turbine. It is possible to establish a capacity selection criterion of braking resistor to ensure the starting reliability of the gas turbine.

  • The vibration, which often occurred in a two inertia motor system, makes it difficult to achieve a quick response of speed and disturbance rejection. This paper provides an autonomous pole assignment technique for three kinds of speed controllers (I-P, I-PD, and State feedback) using GAs(Genetic Algorithms) for a two-inertia motor system. Firstly, the optimal parameters are chosen using GAs in view of reducing overshoot and settling time, then those are used in computing the gains of each controller. Some simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed design. The proposed controller is expected to be the autonomous design way for controlling a two-inertia motor system with flexible shaft.

  • The EHA(Electro-hydrostatic Actuator) reveals completely different characteristics from the conventional valve-controlled Electro-hydraulic actuators. In this paper, its mathematical model including nonlinear elements was derived to be verified by experiments. Based on this, a simulation program was developed for the EHAs consisting of an electric motor driven hydraulic pump, pipe lines and a cylinder. The influence of important design parameters such as peak motor torque and rotational inertia moment of the hydraulic pump on control performance was investigated, where the test condition was intentionally selected so that the motor torque was saturated during the transient phase. As a result, design requirements for improving the control accuracy under full speed operation conditions of the EHAs were investigated.
