  • The most of the design engineers for construction has academic background of bachelors degree. Theories for advanced composite structures are too difficult for such engineers and some simple but accurate enough methods are necessary. The senior author has reported that some laminate orientations have decreasing values of D$_{16}$, B$_{16}$, D$_{26}$ and B$_{26}$ stiffnesses as the ply number increases. Such plates behave as special orthotropic plates and simple formulas developed by the author can be used. Most of the bridge and building slabs on girders have large aspect ratios. For such cases further simplification is possible by neglecting the effect of the longitudinal moment terms(M$_{x}$) on the relevant partial differential equations of equilibrium. In this paper, the result of the study on the subject problem is presented.ented.d.

  • This paper uses loop-star basis functions to overcome the low frequency breakdown problem in method of moments (MoM) based on electric field integral equation(EFIE). In addition, p-Type Multiplicative Schwarz preconditioner (p-MUS) technique is employed to reduce the number of iterations required for the conjugate gradient method(CGM). Low frequency instability with Rao Wilton Glisson(RWG) basis functions in EFIE can be resolved using loop-start basis functions and frequency normalized techniques. However, loop-star basis functions, consisting of irrotational and solenoidal components of RWG basis functions, require a large number of iterations to calculate a solution through iterative methods, such as conjugate gradient method(CGM), due to high condition number. To circumvent this problem, in this paper, the pMUS preconditioner technique is proposed to reduce the number of iterations in CGM. Simulation results show that pMUS preconditioner is much faster than block diagonal preconditioner(BDP) when the sparsity of pMUS is the same as that of BDP.

  • This paper investigates inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of stepped beams subjected to uniformly distributed load and end moments. A three-dimensional finite-element program ABAQUS (2007) and a regression program MINITAB(2006) were used to analytically develop new design equation for singly and doubly stepped beams with simple boundary condition. The flanges of the smaller cross-section in the stepped beams were fixed at 30.48 by 2.54 cm, whereas the width and thickness of the flanges of the larger cross-section varied. The web thickness and height of the beams were kept at 1.65 cm and 88.9 cm, respectively. The ratios of the flange thickness, flange width, and stepped length of beam are considered with analytical parameters. Two groups of 27 cases and 36 cases, respectively, were analyzed for doubly and singly stepped beams in the inelastic buckling range. The combined effects of residual stresses and geometrical imperfection on inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of beams are considered. The distributions of residual stress of the cross-section is same as shown in Pi and Trahair (1995) and the initial geometric imperfection of the beam is set by central displacement equal to 0.1% of the unbraced length of beam. The comparisons between results from proposed equations and the results from finite element analyses were presented in this paper. The maximum differences of two results are of 13% for the doubly stepped beam and 10% for the singly stepped beam. The proposed equations definitely improve current design methods for the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling problem and increase efficiency in building and bridge design.

  • Through a series of analyses of specific structures it is shown that incremental collapse may be the critical design criterion and that shakedown analysis can be used as a design tool. Using shakedown analysis technique, a nonlinear structural optimization program has been developed. This incorporates: (i) design constraints on elastic stresses and deflections: (ii) constraints for the prevention of incremental collapse and soft story failure: and (iii) the constraint on the fundamental period of structure. A five-step design procedure is proposed by using the program to obtain the optimum design that satisfies all the requirements of comprehensive earthquake-resistant design.

  • This paper describes new analytical modeling for steel moment connections with welded straight haunch. Among a variety of new details for seismic steel moment connections proposed after the 1994 Northridge and the 1995 Hyogo-Ken Nanbu earthquake, one viable solution was to strengthen the connection by adding a triangular haunch on the bottom side of the beam. However, a simpler design has been called for because of the increased labor associated with fitting the triangular haunch. Adding a straight haunch is one alternative. But a mathematical model that forms the design basis is not available. A simplified analytical model that considers the force interaction and deformation compatibility between the beam and haunch is developed in this study. The proposed modeling predicted quite reasonably the interaction forces at the beam-haunch interface and the flexural stresses in the beam and haunch flange groove welds.

  • Based on the continuum approach, an investigation is made to get the forces and displacements of laterally loaded outrigger braced structures with a pair of coupled cores, and to show the effect of stiffening outriggers on the behavior of the structure. From the condition that the rotation of the core at the outrigger level is matched with the rotation of the corresponding outrigger, the outrigger restraining moment is derived analytically. From this, the core moment diagram, the column axial forces, and the horizontal displacements of the structure may be determined. Comparisons with the results by the program MIDAS-GEN for the structural models, have shown that this analysis can give reasonably accurate results for outrigger-braced structures with a pair of coupled cores. And a lateral displacement at the top of the structure is influenced by the outrigger location than the core location. Although the formulae are accurate only for idealized outrigger braced structures, they have a useful practical purpose in providing a guide to the behavior, and for making approximate estimates of the forces and displacements, in practical outrigger braced structures with a pair of coupled cores.

  • This paper presents a numerical study for developing the moment magnifier method that is applicable to RC flat plates subject to combined axial compressive and floor load. For the nonlinear finite element analysis, a computer program addressing material and geometric nonlinearities was developed. The flat plates to be studied are designed in accordance with the Direct Design Method in Korean Building Code for Structural Concrete. This paper proposes the buckling force and the moment magnification factor for the flat plate under the governing load condition that is the combined vertical and subsequently applied uniaxial compressive load. The buckling force is defined with two ingredients: the buckling coefficient and the effective flexural rigidity. Parametric studies are performed to investigate variations of the buckling coefficient and the effective flexural rigidity. Based on the numerical results, this paper provides the design values of the buckling coefficient and the effective flexural rigidity, and the design procedure for the moment magnifier method.
