  • As a recent spatial structure have become long-spaned and light, stiffness of out-plane is reduced significantly. Due to this, it is necessary to calculate natural frequency correctly to check if structure is flexible or vortex-induced vibration is occurred. However, formula of frequency in domestic and foreign spatial structure has not been performed deeply. In this study, approximated formula obtained by eigenvalue analysis of seven domestic spatial structure is compared with two suggestions based on Japanese standard and formula by measurement of 28 spatial structure in Japan. Natural frequency of roof has a tendency to be reduced as the span of structure increases. Natural frequency of domestic structure is generally less than that of analysis and measurement of spatial structure in Japan. Therefore, it is confirm that roof of domestic spatial structure is relatively rather flexible than that of Japan.

  • The propagation characteristics of a mechanical wave in human soft tissue depend on its elastic properties. Investigation of these propagation characteristics is of paramount importance because it may enable us to diagnose cancer or tumor from the vibration response of the tissue. This paper investigates and compares displacement patterns generated in soft tissue due to several forms of low-frequency vibration sources placed on a surface. Among vibration sources considered are a normal load, tangential load, and antiplane shear load. We derive analytical expressions for displacements in viscoelastic single layers, and calculate displacement patterns in half space and infinite plate type tissue. Also, we simulate the vibration response of a finite-sized tissue using finite element method. The effects of the type of stress, the size and frequency of vibration sources, and medium boundaries on displacement patterns are discussed.

  • This paper deals with friction-induced vibration of disc brake system under constant friction coefficient. A linear, finite element parameter model to represent the floating caliper disc brake system is proposed. The complex eigenvalues are used to investigate the dynamic stability and in order to verify simulations which are based on the FEM model, the experimental modal test and the dynamometer test are performed. The comparison of experimental and simulation results shows a good agreement and the analysis indicates that mode coupling due to friction force is responsible for disc brake squeal. And squeal type instability is investigated by using the parametric rotor simulation. This indicates parameters which have influence on the propensity of brake squeal. This helped to validate the FEM model and establish confidence in the simulation results. Also they may be useful during real disk brake model.

  • Wind tunnel test results and their interpretations, which were performed to study the aerodynamic stability of tower of self-anchored suspension bridge, are presented in this paper. Tower and full models were tested under smooth and turbulent flow conditions. In the case of the tower with inclined two columns, the vibration due to wakes were occurred at wide velocity zone because the wakes with various frequencies were generated by inclined upstream column. It has to be emphasized that the vibration characteristics of the tower in the self-anchored suspension bridge may be very sensitive to the longitudinal boundary conditions of the girder at the supports. Because of the two natural frequency of the tower, out-of-plane bending and torsional, were not well separated, coupled motions were observed in a wide range of wind velocity. The effectiveness of corner cut, countermeasure to reduce the tower vibrations, was also studied. It has been found that 1:10, comer cut size to column width, may be the most effective ratio for reducing the vibrations.

  • This research presents a three-dimensional modeling technique for a flexible sheet. A relative coordinate formulation is used to represent the kinematics of the sheet. The three-dimensional flexible sheet is modeled by multi-rigid bodies interconnected by out-of-plane joints and plate force elements. A parent node is designated as a master body and is connected to the ground by a floating joint to cover the rigid motion of the flexible sheet in space. Since the in-plane deformation of a sheet such as a paper and a film is relatively small, compared to out-of-plane deformation, only the out-of-plane deformation is accounted for in this research. The recursive formulation has been adopted to solve the equations of motion efficiently. An example is presented to show the validity of the proposed method.

  • The effect of initial combined load on the lateral free vibration of arches is investigated. For the analysis, P-M interaction curves for the arches are obtained. The arches are circular arches which have constant cross-section and simply supported. Also, the arches are subjected both radial uniform distributed load which results in an axial compression on the cross-section and end moments that cause uniform bending action at the same time. All analysis are performed by finite element method based on Kang and Yoo's curved beam theory.

  • In this paper, we present a thin circular beam finite element for the out-of-plane vibration analysis of curved beams. The element stiffness matrix and the element mass matrix are derived respectively from the strain energy and the kinetic energy by using the natural shape functions which are obtained from an integration of the differential equations of the finite element in static equilibrium. The matrices are formulated with respect to the local polar coordinate system or to the global Cartesian coordinate system in consideration of the effects of shear deformation and rotary inertias. Some example problems are analysed. The FEM results are compared with the theoretical ones to show that the presented finite element can describe quite efficiently and accurately the out-of-plane motion of thin curved beams.

  • This paper presents a method for analysis of the mechanical behavior of a crankshaft in a four-cylinder internal combustion engine. The purpose of the analysis was to study the characteristics of the shaft in which the pin and arm parts were assumed to have a uniform section in order to simplify the modal analysis. The results of natural frequency transfer function and mode shape were compared with those obtained by experimental work. The results obtained from the comparison showed a good agreement with each other and consequently verified the analysis model. Furthermore, a prediction of crankshaft characteristics under the firing condition, by using the model, was performed. This study describes a new method for analyzing the dynamic behavior of crankshaft vibrations in the frequency domain based on the initial firing stages. The new method used RMS values to calculate the energy at each bearing journal and counter weight shape modification under the operating conditions.
