  • The heat transfer characteristics from a solid sphere in a fluctuating air flow is simulated numerically in the range of the Reynolds numbers, $1\;{\leqslant}\;Re\;{\leqslant}\;40.$ Such a situation may be encountered in forced convection from a heated spherical particle in a sound field or oscillat-ing flow. The amplitude and phase delay in the heat transfer response to the flow oscillation are computed for a small amplitude flow. The instantaneous response of heat transfer is simulated for the large amplitude oscillation and compared with the quasi-steady response. The effect of the oscillation on the time - mean value in the local and overall heat transfer rate is discussed along with the change in the flow .field.

  • Endovascular embolization technique using a steno is currently used to treat the wide neck aneurysm. Since intraaneurysmal flow characteristics affect thrombus formation and embolisation process. flow visualization technique incorporating photochromic dye was used to elucidate hemodynamic changes by stenting Inside the fusiform aneurysm models. Qualitative observation of flow field and measurement of wall shear rates were Performed at five aneurysm wall locations under pulsatile flow. Intraaneurysmal flow motion was reduced and sluggish vortical motion was maintained during late deceleration phase by stenting. Also wall shear rates were reduced and OSI's were increased in the stented model. These flow characteristics Provide hemodynamic environment favorable for thrombus formation and intimal hyperplasia. The results of this study show hemodynamic changes by stenting Promote thrombus formation and aneurysm embolisation.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of high voltage pulsed current stimulation (HVPCS) on the healing rate of a dermal wound in a rat. We also determined the mechanism of promoting healing by HVPCS. Twenty male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into two group; HVPCS group (n=10) and control group (n=10). The HVPCS rats received electrical stimulation with a current intensity of 50 V at 100 pps for a duration of 30 minutes, while the control group was given the same treatment without electricity for a week. The biopsy specimens were fixed in formalin, embedded in paraffin and stained with Masson's trichrome, hematoxylin and eosin (H&E). The fibroblasts and collagen density were counted using a light microscope and computerized image analysis system and calculated as the density and the percent. A Student t-test showed a significantly higher wound healing rate of the HVPCS group than control (t=-4.161, p<0.001). The fibroblasts in the HVPCS group were higher than in the control group (t=-4.921, p<0.001). The density of collagen in the HVPCS group was also higher than in the control group (t=-4.367, p<0.001). These results indicate that the HVPCS accelerated the rate of healing in dermal wound, and increased fibroblasts and collagen density in the regenerative dermis. These findings suggest that the HVPCS may activate fibroblasts by alteration of the electrical environment, and it may increase collagen synthesis in the regenerative dermal wound.

  • The aim of this study is to point out the uniqueness of Doppler optical coherence tomography (DOCT) for use in a probe station for (in vivo) visualization of microscale flow and structure and to maximize the effectiveness of DOCT by overcoming its limitations. Conventional DOCT produces images of only one of the velocity components that is parallel to the incident light. In this study, a multi-angle DOCT to quantify a velocity vector field is proposed; this is an extension from a velocity scalar field to a vector field. Quantifying an instantaneous three-dimensional velocity field in a pulsating flow is another challenge because of its limited frame rate. The in-vivo pulsating blood flow is measured by using an electrocardiogram-gated multi-angle DOCT in a hamster cheek pouch model. It is shown that the aliasing problem caused by a relatively low frame rate is resolved by using this method of measurement.

  • The four most common types of congenital malformations involving the right atrium(RA) and the coronary sinus(CS) are congenital enlargement of the RA, single RA diverticulum, multiple diverticula of the RA, and aneurysm of the RA or CS. A previously healthy 6year-old child was presented with signs of upper respiratory tract infection. Chest X-ray and echocardiogram revealed a severely isolated right atrial enlargement. The abnormally dilated right atrim was widely resected under cardiopulmonary bypass. Pathology revealed multifocal myocardial loss associated with mild fibrotic changes of the endocardium and epicardium Our experience on this rare congenital disease is presented along with a review of the literature.

  • It is known that the non-planar model of bypass is more profitable to suppress the development of intimal hyperplasia that tends to occur preferentially in regions of low time averaged shear stress and rapid temporal changes in wall shear stress. In this study it was numerically simulated the blood flow in an coronary artery grafted by artificial bypass to determine the flow characteristic variations due to the anastomosis angle changing. 5 different non-planar anastomosis angle models such as 45°, 60°, 90°, 120° and 135° were considered. When the anastomosis angle is higher, the backward flow region is spatially extended near the downstream region of the anastomosis because of the development of horseshoes vortex. For the case of the nan-planar 45° and 60° of anastomosis, the area of low-OSI zone was decreased by 26% and 13% respectively and the time averaged wall shear stress was increased by more than 55% as compared with 45° of planar model. However, both of the area of the low-OSI zone and the time averaged wall shear stress of 90°, 120° model were significantly increased.

  • In this paper, the fundamental equations are developed for the pulsatile laminar flow generated by changing the oscillatory flow with $0{\leq}f{\leq}48Hz$ into a steady one with $0{\leq}Re{\leq}2500$ in a rigid circular pipe. Analytical solutions for the wave propagation factor k, the axial distributions of cross-sectional mean velocity $u_m$ and pressure p are schematically derived and confirmed experimentally. The axial distributions of centerline velocity and pressure were measured by using Pitot-static tubes and strain gauge type pressure transducers, respectively. The cross-sectional mean velocity was calculated from the centerline velocity by applying the parabolic distribution of the laminar flow and it was confirmed by using the ultrasonic flowmeter. It was found that the axial distributions of cross-sectional mean velocity and pressure agree well with theoretical ones and depend only on the Reynolds number Re and angular velocity $\omega$.

  • This paper presents the new control strategy that can minimizes the torque ripple by considering the magnetic nonlinearity and phase torque averlapping intervals, and describes the whole SRM drive system using proposed control method implemented by DSP(Digital Signal Processor). To do this, inductance and torque are, at first, measured according to the variation of rotor position angle while current is kept constant at predetermined several values. From these measured values, the entire inductance and torque for any current and rotor position are inferred by using neural network. And the waveform of the reference phase torque is determined for the torque ripple to be minimized considering the torque overlap between phases. The controller is designed for the actual torque obtained by the inferred torque look-up table using measured current and rotor position angle to track the predetermined reference phase torque by delta modulation technique. To perform a real time processing and ensure the reliability of the controller, DSP is implemented.
