  • Based on digital geologic and geomorphic maps of 1 : 250,000 scale, distributive ratios of rock types were obtained by ArcGIS 9.0 program in the Gyeonggi, Seoul and Incheon areas of the Gyeonggi province. In the Gyeonggi area, 37 rock types are developed, and their geologic ages can be classified into Precambrian, Age-unknown, Triassic, Jurassic, Cretaceous and Quatemary. Among them, distributive ratios are decreasing in the order of Jurassic Daebo granites, Precambrian banded gneiss of Gyeonggi gneiss complex and Quatemary alluvium, all of which comprise about 83.7% of the rock types in the area. In the Seoul and Incheon areas, 10 and 15 rock types are developed, respectively., with the firmer being classified into Precambrian, Jurassic and Quatemary, and the latter into Precambrian, Jurassic, Cretaceous and Quatemary. In the Seoul area, distributive ratios are decreasing in the order of banded gneiss of Gyeonggi gneiss complex, Daebo granites and alluvium, which consist of 95.5% of the rocks in the area. In the Incheon area, distributive ratios are decreasing in the order of alluvium, Daebo granites, banded gneiss of Gyeonggi gneiss complex, reclaimed land, and schists of Gyeonggi gneiss complex, which occupy about 96.2% of the rocks in the area. The ratio of alluvium in the Incheon area is greater than that of Gyeonggi and Seoul areas, and the ratio of reclaimed land in the Incheon area is greater that of the Seoul, which can be attributed to the recent reclamation of the land for the industrial results such as new town development along the coastline of the Gyeonggi Bay.

  • The purpose of this study is to predict appropriate leachate rates and leachate transport velocity through weathered zone and basement rock on the transient condition at Nanji waste landfill. The leachate transport in the Nanji waste landfill is analyzed using MODFLOW(A Modular 3-D Finite Different Groundwater Flow Model) model which simulates three dimension groundwater flow and MT3D(A Modular Three Dimentional Transport Model) model which describes three dimensional transport for advection, dispersion and chemical reaction of dissolved constituents in groundwater system on the transient condition. Leachate production rates are estimated by HELP(Hydraulical Evaluation of Landfill Performance) model and used weather records for recent 10 years. Leachate transport is predicted by a change of leachate level to after/before established HDPE, established slurry wall and wells.

  • In this study, GIS(Geographic Information System), a new approaching method, is proposed to effectively manage long-term settlements in the big reclamation sites. To verify an applicability of the proposed method, the prediction of long-term settlements which may occur in the overall soft deposits of the Incheon International Airport is carried out. During the process of the prediction of long-term settlements, measured settlement data obtained from an early stage of preloading are analyzed in detail. For purposes of the analysis, an estimation of the recompression index is also made based on the Nagaraj's research results. The coefficient of the secondary consolidation is further determined based on the relationship presented by the Mesri & Godlewski, which defines a ratio between the coefficient of the secondary consolidation and the recompression index.

  • For anchored system applications, each ground anchor is tested after installation and prior to being put into service to loads that exceed the design. This load testing methodology, combined with specific acceptance criteria, is used to verify that the ground anchor can carry the design load without excessive deformations and that the assumed load transfer mechanisms have been properly developed behind the assumed critical failure surface. After acceptance, the ground anchor is stressed to a specified load and the load is locked-off. The two types of load tests conducted during the research program included performance test and creep test which were carried out in accordance with testing procedures by AASHTO(AASHTO 1990) and FHWA(Weatherby 1998) at Samsung-Dong 00 Site. Form the measurements, ultimate load and creep rate of anchors are proposed for straight shaft pressured grouted anchors in waste landfill. The load distribution on the grout was obtained from the measured strain data at each fraction of the ultimate load during the load tests.

  • In this study an effective stress analysis was performed to evaluate liquefaction potential and ground settlement for reclaimed sites. The effective stress model can simulate the stiffness degradation due to excess pore pressure and resulting ground deformation. It is applicable to a wide range of strain. An equivalent linear analysis suitable for low strain levels was also carried out to compare the effective stress analysis. Shear stress ratio calculated from an equivalent linear analysis was used to determine SPT blow count to prevent liquefaction. Depending on the magnitude of potential earthquake and fine contents, the SPT blow count was converted into an equivalent cone tip resistance. It was compared with the measured cone tip resistance. The measured elastic shear wave velocity and cone tip resistance from two reclaimed sites in Incheon were used to perform liquefaction analyses. Two liquefaction evaluation methods showed similar liquefaction potential which was evaluated continuously. The predicted excess pore pressure ratio of upper 20 m was between 40% and 70%. The calculated post-shaking settlement caused by excess pore pressure dissipation was less than 10 cm.

  • This paper presents a quasi-analytical method using integral equations to obtain head distributions in unsaturated porous media with different hydrogeologic properties. One-dimensional soultion algorithms were developed for two cases of boundary conditions at the top: 1) constant head and 2) constant flux. Water table elevation at the bottom was assumed known for both cases. The methodology was applied to a fly ash disposal facility in an alluvium area. The results showed that the pressure head distributions had high nonlinearity with large gradients slightly above the interface of two media which made preliminary numerical solutions implausible. The developed method helped to structure finite element grids for improving convergence and accuracy.

  • This article is a case study for the example of the foundation design, in the project area of the silty sand layer that is spread shallowly with loose status, to make the site for a structure and build it up. The site is located on the dredged and reclaimed land in Gun-San and In-Cheon that is formed the silty sand layer with loose status range around 10 meters underground level, the solid ground for the lower pile is shown around 20 meters underground level. Therefore, this area has to be done by ground improvement when applying for the shallow method of foundation. Dynamic compaction method considering the conditions of the design loads in each zone has to be decided through comparative review on the method of foundations and pilot field test was conducted, and drilling investigation and plate bearing test were achieved as well. The analysis results of the tests prove that stability against bearing capacity was acquired by ground improvement effect.

  • This paper describes the influence of rainfall on contamination at stream around the developed quarry. The investigation results are analyzed to evaluate the relationship rainfall and heavy metals (or water pollution). In the relationship rainfall and heavy metals, the result showed that the heavy metal contaminations are caused by boulder stone, waste residue and stone sludge, which is reacted with the direct contamination source, in the burried layer. It also found that the water flow change of stream according to the rainfall increase affected the large effect to a contamination level of heavy metal. the water pollution was increased by time changed from the rainy season to the dry season. That is, a lot of suspended solids had been discharge from the developed quarry due to rainfall increase, and then pollution level of water increases as the undercurrent of suspended solids is generated in stream due to rainfall decrease. Therefore, it analyzed that continuous causes of heavy metal contamination and water pollution in stream are materials in the burried layer and a discharge of pollution source from the developed quarry due to rainfall.

  • The IIA(Inchon International Airport) which will function as the HUB airport in the northeast Asian region in the upcoming 21th century will be located in the reclaimed land with sand dredged in the vicinity of project area between Youngjong and Yongyu islands. The original ground is composed of soft clayey silt (ML) or silty clay (CL). The reclaimed land is classified as being SP-SM and having poor gradation of Cu<3 which resulted in the anticipation for difficulty in compaction (compaction index = 0.6~0.7). This anticipation shedded light on the necessity of performing test compactions for the thickness of 3~5meters of reclaimed land, aiming at the discovery of effective and economical compaction method. Upon the call for the test compaction performance 4 different compaction methods have been selected for trial from the research done on the international and local academic papers, past experience with compaction works, and their written materials. For the precise interparetation of test results, the ground survey and measurements have been performed. The Hydraulic Hammer Compaction has been chosen as the most optimum in accordance withe the test results.

  • In the Vicinity of the Sindae-dong waste disposal site in Taejon, the average Cu, pb and Zn concentrations in soils are higher than those in other Korean soils but these are not high enough to cause any harmful effect to human and animal through the crop plants. Copper, Pb and Zn are not detected in the groundwater samples and F, Cl, $NO_2$, $NO_3$ and $SO_4$ concentrations in groundwater samples are lower than drinking water standards. However, the pH of groundwater sample in site D is 5.58 which is not suitable for the drinking water. With the electric resistivity method, the water-containg layers are found in contaminated soils and the resistivity values are considerably low because of the dispersion of plume by the leak of leachates. According to the results from the magnetic survey method, the anomalous values of the total geomagnetic fields and their gradients are found in the sampling site of low resistivity and high trace element concentrations.
