  • Empiricism has characterized the traditional methods of pile design; in essence, pile design recommendations are based on the accumulated knowledge of pile behaviour based on the construction and subsequent load testing of piles in soil and rock. In this paper, the traditional approaches to design of piles in rock will be briefly reviewed. It will be shown that the unrelated empirical relationships developed fur rock lead to considerable uncertainty in the design of piles. A new method for predicting the shaft resistance of piles socketed into rock, and based on fundamental principles is outlined. It is shown that the shaft resistance predictions of this method agree well with the field test data for rock and hard soil. It is demonstrated by way of a limited parametric study that shaft roughness and socket diameter are critical factors in the performance of piles constructed in these materials. The application of the method to piles socketed into the granites and gneisses of Korea is discussed by way of a case study and by reference to recent direct shear tests on these rocks.

  • This study was conducted to find out the rational and appropriate design of drilled shaft. In other words, in order to find out the variation of ultimate bearing capacity according to the change in the support layer of drilled shaft, back analysis was performed using the bi-directional pile load test performed on drilled shaft. Based on the back-analyzed data, numerical analysis of the pile head load was performed, and the ultimate bearing capacity in the target ground was evaluated using the Davisson method. As a result of numerical analysis of one case where the end of the pile was seated on the top of the weathered rock layer, and three cases where the end of the pile was embedded at different locations in the weathered soil, it was found that sufficient ultimate bearing capacity was secured in all cases. In other words, the case where the end of the pile is seated on the top of the weathered rock layer, not embedded the weathered rock, and the drilled shaft embedded into the weathered soil also have sufficient bearing capacity, so it can be used as a support layer for drilled shaft.

  • The load distribution and deformation of pile subjected to axial loads are evaluated by a load-transfer method. The emphasis is on quantifying the effect of coupled soil resistance that is closely related to the ratio of pile diameter to soil modulus $(D/E_s)$ and the ratio of total shaft resistance against total applied load $(R_s/Q)$, in rock-socketed drilled shafts using the coupled load-transfer method. The proposed analytical method that takes into account the soil coupling effect was developed using a modified Mindlin's point load solution. Through comparisons with field case studies, it was found that the proposed method in the present study estimated reasonable load transfer behavior of pile and coupling effects due to the transfer of shaft shear loading, and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of load deflections of drilled shafts.

  • In this study, static load test and dynamic load test were performed to evaluate pile-filling material (ZA-Soil) of soil-cement injected precast pile method which was developed by using the ash of circulating fluidized boiler as a stimulant for alkali activation reaction of blast furnace slag. As a result of the static load test, the allowable bearing capacity of pile was 1,350 kN, which was the same as the result of using ordinary portland cement. And total settlement was 6.97 mm, and net settlement was 1.48 mm. These are similar to the total settlement, 7.825 mm, and net settlement, 2.005 mm of ordinary portland cement. As a result of the dynamic load test and CAPWAP analysis, the skin friction was 375.0 kN, the end bearing capacity was 3,045.9 kN, and the allowable bearing capacity was 1,368.36 kN. These results are similar to the results of using ordinary portland cement as pile-filling material.

  • Skin friction of prebored and precast pile may be one of the most critical factors affecting the bearing capacity and settlement. Special attention was given to the interface behavior of pile-cement milk-surrounding soil when the load is acting on the prebored and precast pile. The cases of single pile were analyzed through a three-dimensional finite element approach and pile loading tests. A series of numerical analyses of the interface of pile-cement milk-soil was conducted with the proposed t-z curve and field measurements. It is shown that the use of cement milk around the pile increases the skin friction and reduces the pile settlement. It is also known that the suggested t-z curve between the cement milk and the soil, enhances the accuracy of the numerical analysis results.

  • Shear load transfer characteristics of rock-socketed drilled shafts were analyzed. The constant normal stiffness (CNS) direct shear tests were performed to identify the major influencing factors of shaft resistance, i.e., unconfined compressive strength, borehole roughness, normal stiffness, initial confining stress, and material properties. Based on the CNS tests, shear load transfer function of drilled shafts in rocks is proposed using borehole roughness and the geological strength index (GSI), which indicates discontinuity and surface condition of rock mass in Hoek-Brown criterion (1997). The proposed load-transfer function was verified by the load test results of seven rock-socketed drilled test shafts subjected to axial loads. Through comparisons of the results of load tests, it is found that the load-transfer function by the present study is in good agreement with the general trend observed by in situ measurements, and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of load transfer of drilled shafts.

  • Stone column is a soil improvement method and can be applicable for loose sand or weak cohesive soil. Since the lack of sand in korea, stone column seems one of the most adaptable approach for poor ground as a soil improvement technique. However, this method was not studied for practical application. In this paper, the most affective design parameters for the bearing capacity of stone column were studied. The parametric study of major design factors for single stone column was carried out under the bulging and general shear failure condition, respectively. Especially, a test result of single stone column by static load was compared with the bearing capacity values of suggested formulas. The analysis result showed that the ultimate bearing capacity by the formula was much less than the measured value by the static load test. Especially, the result of the parametric study under general shear failure condition showed that the bearing capacity has big difference between each suggested formulas with the variation of the major design parameters. Therefore, the result of this study can be appliable for the future stone column project.

  • This study is to evaluate an application of technology to the soft ground stability using quick lime pile in the field. We investigated properties of Korean quick lime by conducting loading test and theoretical consideration about a principle and property of soft ground improvement by quicklime. According to the test results, it was estimated that quick lime pile method has dehydration effect by absorption of quick lime, consolidation effect by swelling of pile, increasing bearing by strength of pile itself and decreasing sinking effect, etc. A material property of quick lime is favorable for construction and considerable strength. In the case of higher strength is required, using cement as additive would increase material strength.

  • Recently, the necessity of developing the load and resistance factor design(LRFD) for soft ground improvement method has been raised, since the limit state design is requested as international technical standard for the foundation of structures. In this study, to develop LRFD codes for foundation structures in Korea, target reliability index and resistance factor for static bearing capacity of driven steel pipe piles were calibrated in the framework of reliability theory. The 16 data(in Gwangyang) and the 57 data(Korea Institute of Construction Technology, 2008) sets of static load test and soil property tests conducted in the whole domestic area were collected along with available subsurface investigation results. The resistance bias factors were evaluated for the tow static design methods by comparing the representative measured bearing capacities with the expected design values. Reliability analysis was performed by two types of advanced methods : the First Order Reliability Method (FORM), and the Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) method using resistance bias factor statistics. As a result, when target reliability indices of the driven pipe pile were selected as 2.0, 2.33, 2.5, resistance factor of two design methods for SPT N at pile tip less than 50 were evaluated as 0.611~0.684, 0.537~0.821 respectively, and STP N at pile tip more than 50 were evaluated as 0.545~0.608, 0.643~0.749 respectively. The result from this research will be useful for developing various foundations and soil structures under LRFD.

  • Though the static pile load tests gives the mosts accurate estimation on the load carrying capacity of tested pile, it appears time-consuming and not economical. Many test methods using equipments, such as Pile Driving Analyzer(PDA), STATNAMIC, and Osterberg cell, have been introduced in Korea, and pile best using PDA has been gaining popularity because of iris fast and simple operation. Static and dynamic tests results on the piles installed in the granular coils were analyzed to investigate the effect of geometrical damping on the estimated load carrying capacity. It was found that the CAPWAP analysis without considering geometrical damping effect underestimates the pile capacity by 30~60% under certain conditions. It was observed that the underestimation of pile capacity by CAPWAP occurs on the piles installed in the water-borne granular boils by SIP methods. When Smith skin damping value(SSkn) greater than 1.0 sec/m is obtained in CAPWAP analysis, it may reflect the large possibility of underestimation of pile capacity. The introduction of the geometircal damping option in CAPWAP analysis gives reasonable pile capacity, compared with the static pile load test results, and reduces the SSb value under 0.7 sec/m.
