  • The writer discusses the necessity of clear distinction between transliteration and transcription. Romanization problems in Korea have been entangled for decades by confusing and mixing those two. For the transliteration of Hanngul a new system with the utmost simplicity and perfect convertibility is suggested here. For the transcription of Korean sounds another system is suggested which can transcribe even the chroneme as well as all the phonemes. So it surpasses the current Hanngul orthography. Korean sentences containing many pairs of homographic heteronyms are romanized in the two ways side by side for the contrasting of the two systems.

  • Present 'Regulation for Romanization of Korean' is not very well observed by most of Koreans because it is self-contradictory, inconvenient, awkward and difficult to follow. In this paper, the problematic issues are described in detail, and the corrective reforms are suggested. Emphasis is placed on the reasonability, clarity and convenience in use. Capitalizing the first letter of each syllable in a word, the author demonstrates a possibility of remarkably fashionable romanization for Korean language, i.e. HanGeul.

  • The Chinese Pinyin system using Roman characters is used to input Chinese into a computer or a smartphone. However, because the Chinese Pinyin system can not express Chinese pronunciation accurately as it is, it is very difficult for Korean people to input Chinese using this system In this paper, we designed a Chinese input system using Hangeul which can best represent pronunciations among the world's characters. In the system proposed in this study, Chinese input is possible even when Chinese pronunciation is similarly expressed, which increases the probability of successful input and also verified it through performance evaluation.

  • The purpose of this paper is to gather pairs of heteronyms in Modem Korean and to propose that all of them should be differentiated in both the Hanngul orthography and Romanization as well as in the IPA transcription. More than a quarter of the whole Korean vocabulary consists of words with a long vowel and the number of minimal pairs distinguished only by the chroneme reaches nearly ten thousand (ie. twenty thousand words). It is suggested here that the letter s in Hanngul and the letter 'h' in the Roman alphabet be used to represent the long vowel. Another factor which brings forth lots of heteronyms in Korean is the lacking of enough indication as to non-automatic reinforcement in the initial consonant o( a word (or a morpheme) when following another within a phrase (or a word). It is proposed here that the non-automatincally rienforced word-initial consonant should be written with the letter h (like ㅺ, ㅼ, ㅽ, ㅾ) and an apostrophe (like 물'새 or 밭'이랑, 물'약) in Hanngul, and with the letter c and an apostrophe (like c'g-, c'd-, c'b-, c'j- ) in the Roman alphabet The morpheme-initial reinforced consonant within a word is written with the letters k, 1, p and cz for ㅺ, ㅼ, ㅽ, and ㅾ respectively. The contrasted pronunciations of pairs of heteronyms beginning with ㅁ/m sound are transcribed here for exemplification in the IPA, Roman alphabet and Hanngul.

  • This paper compares the four official romanization systems (1948, 1959, 1984 and 2000) and analyzes the third- and fourth-year primary school English textbooks and teacher's guides in terms of romanization of personal names. This study is conducted with the assumption that the inconsistent use of romanization is due to two major causes, i.e., the frequent changes of the formal romanization systems and the exclusion of the romanization system from the school curriculum. The current third- and fourth-year primary school English text books (Ministry of Education, 2001) are chosen for the analysis because they are the first primary school English textbooks to be implemented based on the 7th National Curriculum. The study found that the textbooks and teacher's guides did not state which romanization system they were following and were not consistent in romanizing personal names. This study suggests including the current official romanization system in the current primary school curriculum and outlines a strategy for teaching the romanization system which suits the curriculum.

  • This study was conducted to analyze the characteristics of records related to Korea shown in the cataloging records of national libraries of the main 12 developing countries in Europe and South America. The results are as follows. To begin with, Korea-related records in most national libraries are very poor and under 0.01% of the library. Second, Korean materials usually write Korean in Roman characters except for National Library of Armenia, but there are not marked with the original Korean language and unfeasible Hangeul search. Third, on investigation of the subject distribution in sub criteria of Korea-related records, subject related to history, politics, and economy is largely shown in the highest rate. Fifth, among the Korea-related subject heading, Taekwondo is marked with distinction from Karate in most libraries except for National Library of Argentina. Dokdo is marked with the geographical name of 'Korea' in 8 national libraries and East Sea (Donghae) already is marked with 'Sea of Japan' in 7 national libraries. Amnokgang, Dumangang, and Baekdusan-related records did not search at all in most national libraries.

  • This research was conducted to analyze the actual condition of records related to Korea shown in the catalog of major 10 European university libraries. The results are as follows. To begin with, most libraries apply subject headings of the national library, or go together with LCSH, and organize records in MARC 21 format rather than UNIMARC. Second, Korean materials usually Romanize Korean words, but three libraries are only marked with the original Korean language and available Korean search. Third, Korea-related records in most university libraries are very poor except for some libraries and are generally 2 times less than Japan related records. There are even 6 times less in 2 libraries. Forth, on investigation of the subject distribution in sub criteria of Korea-related records, subject related to 'history', 'politics', and 'economy' is largely shown in the highest rate. Fifth, Among the Korea-related subject heading, the terms such as 'Taekwondo', 'Kimchi', 'Dokdo', 'Donghae', 'Duman-gang', 'Baekdu-san' have different meanings in different libraries. However, these terms agree to LCSH in most libraries except for some libraries.

The results are as follows. To begin with, Korea-related records in most national libraries are very poor and under 0.1% of the library. • The Purpose of this paper is to gather pairs of heteronyms in modern Korean and transcribe them in the IPA and the Roman alphabet in order to propose that all of them should be differentiated in Hanngul orthography. More than a quarter of the whole Korean vocabulary consists of words with a long vowel and the number of minimal pairs distinguished only by the chroneme reaches nearly ten thousand (i.e. twenty thousand words). The letter h syllable-finally is used here to represent the long vowel in Romanization except the vowel '으‘[?:] which is transcribed by doubling the letter u (i.e. uu). Another factor bringing forth lots of heteronyms in Korean is the lack of full indication as to the non-automatic reinforcement in the initial consonant of a word (or a morpheme) when preceded by another within a phrase (or a word). These reinforced word-initial consonants are written with the letter c and an apostrophe (like c'g- , c'd- , c'b-, c's-, c'j-) in Romanization here. The reinforced morpheme-initial consonant within a word is written with the letters k t, p, ss and cz for ㄲ, ㄸ, ㅃ, ㅆ and ㅉ sounds respectively. The contrasted pronunciations of pairs of heteronyms beginning with ㅅ /s/sup h// and ㅆ /s/ sounds are transcribed here for exemplification.
