  • Mitologia is about visualizing relations of information in user-oriented method. Most information given in life has invisible relations with each other. By analyzing the common characters and relations of information, we can not only measure the importance of the information but also grasp the overall properties of the information. Especially human relations are the major concerns of social network having several visualization methodologies shown by analyzing relations of each individual in society. We applied social network theory to grasp relationships between characters in Greek mythology representing a limited society. But the current tools of social network analysis have limits that they show the information one-sided way because of the ignorance of user-oriented design. Mitologia attempts to suggest the visual structure model more effective and easy to understand in analyzing data. We extracted connections among myth characters by evaluating classes, frequencies of appearance and emotional links they have. And we raised the understanding of users with furnishing the proper interaction to the information. The initial interface offers 4 kinds of indexes helping to access character nodes easily, while zoom-in function can be used for the detailed relations. The Zoom-in is quite different from usual filtering methods. It makes the irrelative information invisible so that users can find out the characters' relation more easily and quickly. This project suggests the layout to show overall information relationships and the appropriate interactions to present detailed information at the same time.

  • College campus landscape plans once focused mainly on campus functionality and aesthetically pleasing buildings. Yet now, after the rise of greater emphasis on afforestation and eco-friendly planning, building spaces for the local culture and community has become the core of the plan. This study analyzed the design strategies and details of the landscape plan that was selected through the contest to select a design plan for the cultural park at Sunchon National University. The key considerations for the landscape Design for the cultural space at Sunchon National University areas follows. First, the design plan sought ways to reach out to the local community, going one step beyond just opening up campus facilities. This means more than just the opening of physical facilities and environments. It was designed to serve as a base to organize diversified programs by generations and groups with an aim to share the history and culture of the college, the local community and the region. Second, shapes and colors were designed to establish a unified image between buildings and outdoor facilities. "Three Books" was selected as the key motif as books were believed to be the most representative symbol of colleges while 6 straight lines, hexagons and circles inspired by the shape of three books were used in the design. In terms of colors, reddish-brown was used for buildings to enhance visibility along with harmony and esthetic appreciation. For facilities, black and blue were used as dominant colors and white and yellow as point colors to promote the image of Sunchon City. Third, with an aim to overcome the limitation of the overall college campus as a closed space, it was designed to be a barrier-free space, remaining open to everyone and encouraging visits and experiences for active communication with the local community.

  • In this study, in order to analyze customers' space satisfaction, ten modern high-class Korean restaurants, five in New York and another five in Seoul, that were opened or remodeled after 2008 were selected and satisfaction characteristics survey of 197 customers who use these Korean restaurants was conducted by using Likert 5-point scale. The study results(a high reliability was obtained showing the Cronbach's alpha coefficient of average 0.895 for all questions) were analyzed for the frequency, percentage, mean, etc. and the mean between groups were comparatively analyzed by conducting the t-test, Duncan's test by using the SPSS 18.0 statistical program. The results are as follows. First, the results of customers general characteristic comparative analysis, all the Seoul and New York customers have comparatively high academic ability, high income and eating-out expenses. The main customers in Seoul were the women in their thirties and forties while those in New York were mainly in their forties and fifties both men and women at similar rate. Second, as to the satisfaction with the interior, the satisfaction with finishing materials was little higher in New York as Seoul (3.30 points) and New York (3.86 points). The satisfaction with color was relatively higher in Seoul (3.66 points) and relatively lower in New York (3.18 points). As the satisfaction with furniture and decorating accessories was relatively lower in both Seoul (3.10 points) and New York (3.48 points). The satisfaction with space size in Seoul (the total space size: 3.99 points, private space size; 3.90 points) was relatively higher than that in New York (the total space size: 3.46 points, private space size; 3.28 points). The results of study is as follows ; we have first found that Korean restaurants did not show any humane properties linked to restaurant concepts and indoor space, did link Korean images through their trade names, and showed decorative culture based on traditional house and dietary-life cultural properties based on traditional Korean Bansang table setting at large. On the other hand, 4 (22.5%) out of the entire cases in Thai restaurants showed religious characteristics with strong Buddhist colors revealed, and all cases showed traditional Thai food cultures, from which we could find out dietary-life cultural properties. Second, whereas there were one case of Korean restaurants in which tradition was main and modernity was assistant, five cases in which tradition and modernity were paralleled in value, and two cases in which modernity was main and tradition was assistant, Thai restaurants had one case where tradition was main and modernity was associative, four cases in which tradition and modernity were paralleled in value, and four cases where modernity was main and tradition was assistant. This means that the Thai restaurants did not insist only on tradition, but showed efforts to transmit luxurious and refined Thai images to people from the world. • In this study, the author comparatively analyzed the effects and applicability of drifts, one of planting design methods based on the principle of visual harmony, to look into the definition and characteristics in planing techniques with examples of drifts in gardens designed by Gerturde Jekyll and Piet Oudolf. Sites chosen for the case studies included Jekyll's Upton grey and Hestercomb garden and Oudolf's At Scampston Hall and Trentham Estate Garden. The results showed that Jekyll set layers for vertical and horizontal structures by using plants of different height to make flowers look like floating with their stems unseen and appear in turn over time. Assemble planting of groups was used to conceal rigid, irregular lines so that the plants are recognized as mass with smoother horizontal lines. Clearly visible, repeated drifts creates a sense of unity. Oudolf, in combining grass and perennial plants, used one-to-one correspondence or expansion to express drifts. Grass serves roles as a connecting material inserted when changing space or making transitions of images. Blocks in single species are repeatedly crossed to set scenes, and overlapping and mixing makes them more lively.

  • Folk painting was prevalent among working classes in the cultural territory of chinese characters including Korea, Japan, and Vietnam. Other than Gilsangmunja-do(lucky and vulgar illustrated Chinese Character), the most popular of its kind, there are various types of different Munja-do(illustrated Chinese Character) which is more shaped/modeled. Chinese Nianhua style was popular in various parts of China from late Ming Dynasty to early Qing Dynasty, and they were conveyed to neighboring countries after the 17th century, where they adopted unique tradition of each country. Acquiring theme from Chinese characters, these Chinese Nianhua or Munja-do are designed by making images into characters or characters into images. They express the invisible 'Cosmological Taoism' as a visible shape and line. This kind of symbol system, using character as a subject matter, can only be witnessed in the cultural territory of chinese characters by the use of ideograms. It is worth of paying attention today because the uniqueness of each country's style reflects diverse life styles of the contemporary civilization. Specifically, values of Munja-do as a traditional culture may not be underestimated in today's society where culture has become the center of concern. Munja-do in Korea should be carefully examined since Korea has had a very unique Munja-do culture that cannot be found from other countries. Therefore, by comparing Munja-do styles of today's the cultural territory of chinese characters countries, we may enlighten ourselves on our tradition and flourish our cultural contents.

  • The origin of natural planting, which is getting the spotlight in modern time facing natural and environmental problems, can be found from wild gardens. They were started by William Robinson and concretely embodied by Gertrude Jekyll. It is worth shedding new light on wild gardens, as they served as a pathbreaker for ecological design and an important foundation for the specialization of naturalism, which are part of the most important topics in modern gardens. This study aimed to infer the conceptual model of wild gardens and identify their historic significance by comparatively analyzing Robinson's Gravetye Manor and Jekyll's Munstead Wood. The results are: Firstly, they inherited inspirations for spatial organization from basic cottage gardens and introduced informal forms. Secondly, in terms of the use of materials, they had observed various climates in their journeys so that they could use both native and naturalized plants based on their understanding of the plants' hardiness and exotic species. They also displayed interests in plants in the woodlands and forests. Thirdly, in terms of design techniques, they investigated the colors and textures of individual plants and their relationships to produce a variety of views that resembled nature in microcosm. Fourthly, in terms of maintenance, their basic orientation was the minimum maintenance to allow plants to live according to their nature.
