  • The capacity spectrum method(CSM) can be used for the evaluation of inelastic maximum response of structures and has been recently used in the seismic design using the incorporation of pushover analysis and response spectrum method. To efficiently evaluate seismic performance of multi-degree-of freedom(MDOF) bridge structures, it is important that the equivalent response of MDOF bridge structures should be calculated. To calculate the equivalent response of MDOF system, equivalent responses are obtained by using Song method, Fajfar method and Calvi method. Also, those responses are applied to CSM method and seismic performance of bridge according to the ESDOF method are compared and evaluated straightforwardly.

  • The BEM for linear elastic stress analysis is applied to the highly rotating axisymmetric body problem which also involves the thermoelastic effects due to steady-state thermal conduction. The axisymmetric BEM formulation is briefly summarized and an alternative approach for transforming the volume integrals associated with such body force kernels into equivalent boundary integrals is described in a way of using the concept of inner product and vector identity. A discretization scheme for higher order BE is outlined for numerical treatment of the resulting boundary integral equations, and it is consequently illustrated by determining the stress distributions of the turbine rotor disk of the small turbojet engine(ADD 500) for which a FEM stress solution has been furnished by author.

  • This paper presents accuracy of a method that directly estimates equivalent properties of a 1-3 piezocomposite for modeling it into the single phase homogeneous piezomaterial. This direct estimation method finds individual components of a material property matrix based on the piezoelectric constitutive equations, which represent mechanical and electrical behaviors and their couplings. Equivalent properties on a single 1-3 piezocomposite hydrophone are derived, and their accuracy depending on pairing of the constitutive equations is investigated by comparing them with finite element analysis for the whole domain. The accuracy is related to elastic characteristics of a matrix polymer, and the error is analyzed so that some guidelines for correct estimation are suggested. Fidelity of estimated properties and equivalent modeling is shown in a stave scale including hydrophones and surrounding acoustic structures as well, and reduced computational cost is verified.

  • In this study, behavior of unpatched and patched cylindrical shells with through-wall cracks has been estimated using numerical experiments, and patching effect of them has been investigated according to various patching parameters. To show credibility of numerical models considered, two ways such as h- and p-methods have been adopted. Also, domain integral method and virtual crack extension method have been considered to calculate energy release rates based on linear elastic fracture mechanics. For examples, the unpatched cylindrical shells with circumferential cracks under remote tension have firstly been analyzed to show the validity of finite element modeling with h-method or p-method, and then the results have been compared with literature values published. Next, the sensitive analysis of patch repaired problems in terms of thickness of patch and adhesive, shear modulus of adhesive, composite material type of patch, crack length, etc. has been carried out.

  • In order to evaluate seismic performance of multi-degree-of-freedom bridge structure, moderate lateral load distribution methods using the pushover analysis were developed by many researchers. One of important variables to improve an accuracy of pushover analysis is lateral load distribution. In this study, pushover analyses were performed using the five types of lateral load distribution and seismic performances were evaluated by capacity spectrum method (CSM). To verify an accuracy of suggested lateral load distribution, the maximum displacement estimates by the CSM were compared to those by inelastic time history analysis.

  • Shrinkage strains of concrete slab in multi-story building are restrained by structural members such as columns or walls, then can induce cracks due to excessive shrinkage stress over tensile strength of member. In this study, a shrinkage stress analysis method of concrete slab in multi-story building considering not only material properties such as shrinkage, creep and reinforcement effect but also construction sequence is proposed. Tensile stresses of slab due to shrinkage are calculated by converting shrinkage strains into equivalent temperature gradients, creep that can release shrinkage stress can be considered by replacing the modulus of elasticity of concrete, Ec , to the effective secant modulus of elasticity of concrete, E$\_$eff/ Reinforcements are also considered by modeling them as equivalent beam elements in FEM program. Results of step by step analysis reflecting construction sequence summed up to calculate stresses of the whole building considering that shrinkage stresses of the building come from the difference of shrinkage between i-th floor and (i-1)-th floor, named as effecitive shrinkage, and it can be varied by construction sequence. The results of 10-story example building show that shrinkage stresses of lower floors are greater than those of upper floors, that is, stresses of lower floors(1∼2FI.) exceed modulus of rupture of concrete, but stress ratios of higher floors are in the range of 27.9∼92.8%.

  • Under transverse earthquake shaking, arching action of bridge structures develops along the deck between the abutments thus providing the so-called deck resistance. The magnitude of the arching action for bridge structures is dependent on the number of spans, connection condition between deck and abutment or piers, and stiffness ratio between superstructure and substructure. In order to investigate the arching action effects for inelastic seismic responses of PSC Box bridges, seismic responses evaluated by pushover analysis, capacity spectrum analysis and nonlinear time-history analysis are compared for 18 example bridge structures with two types of span numbers (short bridge, SB and long bridge, LB), three types of pier height arrangement (regular, semi-regular and irregular) and three types of connection condition between superstructure and substructure (Type A, B, C). The arching action effects (reducing inelastic displacement and increasing resistance capacity) for short bridge (SB) is more significant than those for long bridge (LB). Semi-regular and irregular bridge structures have more significant arching action than regular bridges.

  • A method analizing contact pressure between plate and elastic half space is presented by using F.E.M. With the method, the pressure intensities at surface nodes of half space cae be directly calculated by using flexibility matrix of half space. The method is originally presented by Y.K. Cheung et al.(3) Insted of Y.K. Cheung's method, which use a conception of equi-contact pressure area around each surface nodes of half space in the noded rectanqular element area. We use the equi-contact pressure area around the Gaussian integration points of half space surface in the noded isoparametric element area. Numarical examples are presented and compared with other's studies.

  • One-dimensional site response analysis is widely used to simulate the seismic site effects. The equivalent linear analysis, which is the most widely used type of site response analysis, is essentially a linear method. The method applies constant shear modulus and damping throughout the frequency range of the input motion, ignoring the dependence of the soil response on the loading frequency. A new type of equivalent linear analysis method that can simulate the frequency dependence of the soil behavior via frequency-strain curve was developed. Various forms of frequency-strain curves were proposed, and all curves were asserted to increase the accuracy of the solution. However, its validity has not been extensively proven and the effect of the shape of the frequency-strain curve is not known. This paper used two previously proposed frequency-strain curves and three additional curves developed in this study to evaluate the accuracy of the frequency-dependent equivalent linear method and the influence of the shape of the frequency-strain curves. In the evaluation, six recordings from three case histories were used. The results of the case study indicated that the shape of the frequency-strain curve has a dominant influence on the calculated response, and that the frequency dependent analysis can enhance the accuracy of the solution. However, a curve that results in the best match for all case histories did not exist and the optimum curve varied for each case. Since the optimum frequency-strain curve can not be defined, it is recommended that a suite of curves be used in the analysis.
