  • This study looks into the level of anxiety that middle school students have about PE class, dividing the classes into coed class and single-sex class and aims to conduct an in-depth analysis of differences in sub-factors of the anxiety. Subjects of the study were 554 students in randomly selected six middle schools located in Gyeonggi-do. To figure out the relationships among the sub-factors of the anxiety according to class, grade, academic record and the level of physical strength, a Multivariate Analysis of Variance model was set up and analysis was conducted. The results obtained through the research are as follows. First, it was predicted that the level of anxiety about PE class in middle school would have a great impact on the factor, 'punishment' by class (coed and single-sex). Second, it was predicted that the level of anxiety about PE class in middle school would have a great impact on the factors, 'anxiety about the event of sports' and 'conflict during class' by grade. Third, it was found that there was no difference in the level of anxiety about PE class that middle school students had according to their academic record in PE. Fourth, it was predicted that the level of anxiety about PE class in middle school would have a great impact on the factor of 'anxiety about the event of sports' by the level of physical strength.

  • The purpose of this study is to train peercounselors within the minimum period and use them as mentors for rejected children in order to raise the social status of those children. To do so, five mentors were assigned to five rejected children but their social status did not show significant difference. Not only that, even the social status of the mentors was decreased so the primary purpose of this study was not achieved. However, the activities in the class such as the mentor activity increased the choices that students can get. These changes were definite in the male student groups rather in female student groups. Female students had their own way of change and direction regardless of the class activities. Therefore, there is a possibility that 5th graders in the elementary school have different classroom dynamics according to their genders. The different classroom dynamic by genders and the choice and direction of rejection shown in the matrix table indicate that it is proper to use same-sex peer nomination for sociometry. Also, the results of this study raise the necessity for further studies regarding individual approaches for rejected children and the intervention methods that teachers use for those children.

  • This study investigated the effect of gender grouping on cooperative learning on the basis of student achievement and science-teaming attitude. Homogeneous and heterogeneous gender groupings were used in the treatment groups for the learning strategies of earth science. Traditional instruction was performed for the control group. Three classes at a middle school were assigned to the groups. Before the treatment instruction, a questionnaire about science-learning attitude was administered to 144 students, and their scores were utilized as covariate. Then, the same questionnaire was given with a test of science achievement designed in this study. The changes in both achievement and attitude among the three groups were analyzed statistically. Significant differences were not shown in science achievement or in the difference of gender with respect to perceptions about science. There were significant changes between the homogeneous and heterogeneous gender grouping in their attitudes toward science instruction. Here the cooperative learning group, regardless of the gender grouping, tends to exhibit more positive perceptions towards their learning environment than the control group, particularly in female students.
