Urban air mobility (UAM) is emerging as a revolutionary transportation solution to urban congestion and environmental issues. Especially, electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft are expected to enhance urban mobility, reduce traffic congestion, and decrease environmental pollution. However, the successful implementation and operation of UAM systems heavily rely on advanced technological infrastructure, particularly in sensor technology. Among these, 3D light detection and ranging (LiDAR) systems are essential for detecting obstacles and generating pathways in complex urban environments. This paper focuses on the challenges of developing LiDAR-based perception solutions, emphasizing the importance and performance of object detection capabilities using 3D LiDAR. It integrates LiDAR data processing algorithms and object detection methodologies to experimentally validate the effectiveness of perception solutions that contribute to the safe navigation of aircraft. This research significantly enhances the ability of aircraft to recognize and avoid obstacles effectively within urban settings.
The Concept of Operations (ConOps) document issued by the Korean Government (K-UAM ConOps) for urban air mobility (UAM) services takes into account not only aviation voice communication but also the use of 4G and 5G mobile communication to support the initial phase of UAM services. This paper studies a methodology to establish communication performance requirements for UAM traffic management and presents the analyzed results for communication performance requirements. To accomplish this, the operational scenarios of UAM developmental stages outlined in the K-UAM ConOps and FAA ConOps are scrutinized, and the diverse messages that must be communicated among various stakeholders for effective UAM operations are identified. A draft of communication performance requirements is also calculated by considering packet sizes, transmission frequencies, acceptable latencies, and availability. The outcomes of this study are expected to stand as a pioneering effort in defining communication requirements for UAM services, providing a crucial foundation for future initiatives such as the design of dedicated communication networks for UAM and the determination of required frequency bandwidth.

The demand for e-VTOL aircraft is expected to be increased rapidly in the future as a means of urban transportation due to operating cost reduction, eco-friendliness and convenience of vertical take-off and landing using pilot-aids automation system. However, there are many technical hurdles to be solved in securing safety and certification which are essential for commercialization and urban operation. So far, there is no e-VTOL aircraft that has received type certificate and standard airworthiness certificate due to the technical problems and safety requirement differences with conventional aircraft. The e-VTOL aircraft certification should also meet the equivalent level of safety required by the current airworthiness standards, but there are existing problems in securing safety and meeting current standards. In this study, the e-VTOL's certification problems and technical limitations in satisfying the current standards are presented.

Experimental investigation of counter-rotating propellers is subject to multiple time and cost constraint because of additional design parameters unlike single propeller. Also, a lot of computing time and resources are required for numerical analysis due to consideration of the interference between the upper and lower propellers. In the present study, numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the hover performance of counter-rotating propellers by using actuator method which is considered to be time-efficient. The accuracy of the present numerical methods was validated by comparing the ANSYS Fluent which is commercial CFD code. The axial spacing and rotational speed were selected as the analysis variables, and the aerodynamic performance was obtained under various conditions. Based on the obtained results, the Figure of Merit (FM) of single propeller and counter-rotating propellers and a prediction factor which enables prediction of counter-rotating propeller performance using a single propeller were derived to evaluate availability of the actuator method.

Urban air mobility (UAM) is being developed as part of the next-generation aircraft, which could be a viable solution to entrenched problems of urban traffic congestion and environmental pollution. A new airport platform called vertiport as a space where UAM can take off and land vertically is also being introduced. Noise regulations for UAM will be strict due to its operation in a highly populated urban area. Ground effects caused by vertiport can directly affect aerodynamic forces and noise characteristics of UAM. In this study, ground effects of vertiport on aerodynamic loads, vorticity field, and far-field noise were analyzed using Lattice-Boltzmann Method (LBM) simulation and Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings (FW-H) acoustic analogy with a permeable surface method.

To improve the lift, cruise speed, and range of eVTOL aircraft, which are being considered as future transportation vehicles, this paper introduces the concepts of Tilt Rotor and Tandem Wing to the aircraft. We developed an aircraft and conducted flight experiments to obtain flight videos and flight logs. The results of the analysis of the flight videos and flight logs showed that the aircraft's moment was excessively forward and the attitude was not recovered. To address this problem, we modified the wing incidence angles and surface areas in XFLR5 to obtain the optimal pitching moment coefficients to ensure vertical stability. We then analyzed the redesigned aircraft, developed using CATIA, through XFLR5. The results of this study provide valuable insights, suggesting that the incorporation of Tilt Rotor and Tandem Wing designs can contribute to achieving stable pitching moment coefficients. This innovative approach offers a promising avenue to significantly enhance vertical stability in UAM vehicles, paving the way for future advancements in the field.
In the initial stages of urban air mobility (UAM) operations, compliance with existing visual flight rules and instrument flight regulations for conventional human-crewed aircraft is crucial. Additionally, voice communication between the on board pilot and relevant UAM stakeholders, including vertiports, is essential. Consequently, very high frequency (VHF) aviation voice communication must be consistently provided throughout all phases of UAM operations. This paper presents the results of the VHF communication coverage analysis for the initial UAM demonstration areas, encompassing the Hangang River and Incheon Ara-Canal corridors, as well as potential vertiport candidate locations. By considering the influence of terrain and buildings through the utilization of a digital surface model (DSM), communication quality prediction results are obtained for the analysis areas. The three-dimensional coverage analysis results indicate that stable coverage can be achieved within altitude corridors ranging from 300 m to 600 m. However, there are shaded areas in the low-altitude vertiport regions due to the impact of high-rise buildings. Therefore, additional research to ensure stable coverage around vertiports in the lower altitude areas is required.

Global discussions are actively underway regarding the introduction of urban air mobility (UAM) to revolutionize the paradigm in the innovative mobility industry. While research related to airspace, vertiports, navigation, and communication pertinent to Korean UAM is actively pursued by relevant research institutions, there is a significant dearth in studies focusing on establishing concepts for operational management by UAM operators and formulating control procedures. The commercialization of UAM necessitates the establishment of standardized operational management concepts, pivotal as benchmarks for the individual system development among multiple UAM operators. This paper analyzes UAM exceptional law, operational readiness, existing regulations pertaining to commercial and rotary-wing aircraft, and proposes suitable approaches to formulate domestic low-density operational management and control procedures. By presenting strategies for conceptualizing operational management and control procedures in the initial low-density environment for UAM, this paper aspires to contribute to future trail operations and the wider adoption of UAM.

An electro-mechanical actuator (EMA) is an actuator that combines an electric motor with a mechanical power transmission elements, and it is suitable for urban air mobility (UAM) in terms of design freedom and maintenance. In this paper, the author presents the research results of the EMA that controls the rotor blade pitch angle of UAM. The actuator is based on an inverted roller screw and controls the blade pitch angle through a two-bar linkage. The dynamic equations for the actuator alone and the blade pitching motion with actuator were derived. For the latter, the equivalent moment of inertia is variable depending on the link angle due to the two-bar linkage. The variations of the equivalent moments of inertia are analyzed and compared in terms of the nut motion and the blade pitch motion. For an example model, the variation of the equivalent moment of inertia of the former is smaller than the latter, so it is judged that the dynamic equations derived from the point of view of the nut motion is suitable for the controller design.
