Effects of the Physical Environment around Elementary Schools on Children's Walking Safety - A Case Study of the Elementary Schools in Changwon - (초등학교 주변 물리적 환경이 보행안전에 미치는 영향 - 창원시 초등학교를 대상으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between children's walking safety or risk of traffic accident and the physical environments around 20 public elementary schools in Changwon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do. Field surveys were conducted to assess the street-level objective and subjective walking environments. The GIS method was used for measuring the neighborhood-level land use patterns. Children's walking safety and risk of traffic accident data were collected from the 6,381 grade 5 to 6 students attending 18 elementary schools through the questionnaire survey. Correlation analysis showed that walking safety and risk of traffic accident of the elementary students were associated with the number of temporary or permanent obstacles on the sidewalk, traffic safety signs, driveway and street intersections, street lights, and percentage of detached housing area and road area on neighbourhood-level. This research will promote to help with constructing a safe routes to school and walking-friendly healthy community.

A Study on the Safety-Maximizing Design of Exclusive Bus Lanes (안전성 제고를 위한 버스전용차로 디자인 연구)

  • Exclusive bus lane (EBL) is typically located in the roadway median, and is accessed by weaving across the GPLs(general purpose lanes) before entering from the left lane of the GPLs. To maximize the potential for successful EBL operations, a critical design issue that requires special attention is the length of bus weaving section before entering EBL. The process of developing guidelines for the length of bus weaving section can be supported by a sensitivity analysis of performance measure (safety) with respect to the bus weaving distance. However, field data are difficult to obtain due to inherent complexity in creating performance measure (safety) samples under various interesting flows and bus weaving distance that are keys to research success. In this paper, VISSIM simulation is applied to simulate the operation of roadway weaving areas with EBL, and based on vehicle trajectory data from microscopic traffic simulation models, the Surrogate Safety Assessment Model (SSAM) computes the number of surrogate conflicts (or degree of safety) with respect to the bus weaving distance. Then, a multiple linear regression (MLR) model using safety data (number of surrogate conflicts) is developed. Finally, guidelines for bus weaving distance are established based on the developed MLR. Developed guidelines explicitly indicate that a longer bus weaving distance is required to maintain desired safety as weaving volume increases.

  • There were many theories to suggest the indicators that evaluate stability and reflect the plan in mixed traffic street in all traffic modes This Paper analyzed residential street of Suwon City adopting time-space occupancy index among these indicates. Three survey street. congregated into apartment house. were selected to analyze this and pictured by video camera over one hour. and the length of these street were 76m, 55m, and 34m each, and major street by each region, comparably high in Pedestrians and pass vehicles, were selected. Basic datum to calculate time-space occupancy index and time-space occupancy index per person was gathered through video analysis. i.e Parameters for pedestrians, cars, bicycles, average speed of bicycles, and parking car. There are some limitation to analyze LOS of mixed traffic street in all traffic modes, not pedestrian mall. Therefore this paper presented evaluation standard of LOS. In conclusion. the aim of this paper is to suggest modeling based on guidelines for evaluating LOS of mixed traffic street in all traffic modes. It is estimated that this will be influencing indicates for improving pedestrian environment, and Planning mixed traffic street in future.

  • The number of accidents occurring at railway crossings is less than the accidents on other sections of roads but they cause enormous socio-economic damages. The geometric aspects of the railway crossing have to allow the drivers to recognize the crossings and take precautions against collisions. Therefore, ensuring visibility for the vehicle approaching the railway crossing is necessary for safe operation of the crossing. However, as there is little research related to railway crossing visibility in Korea. validating visibility and maintaining visibility based on the validation is badly needed. This research develops a visibility validation model to support improving visibility and to reduce accidents at railway crossings to improve safety for the crossing users.

The Comparative Study on Travel Behavior and Traffic Accident Characteristics on a Community Road - With Focus on Seoul Metropolitan City (생활도로에서의 교통행태와 교통사고특성에 관한 연구 - 서울특별시를 중심으로)

  • In Korea, the number of crash accident victims per 100,000 population is three times higher than the average of OECD. In particular, 60% of it occurs on the community road. Thus, this study intends to analyze the causes of such accidents through a pedestrian and vehicle traffic survey. The purpose is to establish practical safety enhancement measures for community roads. In recent years, lots of changes have occurred in the pedestrian environment. A traffic survey shows that 65% of pedestrians walk on the right and 17% of people use smart-phones while walking. An eye camera experiment shows that the operation load of drivers on the community roads is more than 4 times higher than those in urban roads. According to a speed survey, 62% of vehicles drive at 30km/h or above. The characteristics of accidents on community roads are as follows. First, the ratio of accidents on the edge of the road is 2.3 times as high as those on other roads. Second, when people walk on the right, the ratio of accidents is 2.5 times as high as that of walking on the left. Third, it becomes more dangerous when people cross the road from the right to the left. The majority of accidents is caused by unsafe driving (84.4%). When a vehicle makes a left turn, the likelihood of accidents is 2.3 times as high as those caused by a right turn. The ratio of accidents caused by vehicles going backwards is 14% among all accidents. In community roads, the focus of drivers should be at least 4 times higher than those on urban roads. Thus, walking in the opposite direction of vehicles and careless behaviors are highly likely lead to accidents.

Safety Assessment of Signalized Intersection Using SSAM : A Case of Actuated Signal Control (SSAM을 이용한 신호교차로 안전성 평가(감응식 교통제어 도입사례를 중심으로))

  • The surrogate safety assessment model which was developed based on the conflict theory by FHWA in the US is software to analyze traffic conflicts using the individual vehicle trajectory data from a microscopic traffic simulation model. This study aims at assessing the safety of different signal control strategies, including pre-time and actuated signal control, using the SSAM. To this end, this study effort has developed a microscopic traffic simulation model using VISSIM through a field study, and then produced the surrogate measures, including TTC, PET, DR, MaxS and DeltaS, and the numbers of conflicts, including rear-end, right angle and lane-changing conflicts. The assessment results indicated that the actuated signal control may produce more conflicts in terms of rear-end conflicts. The use of SSAM in the safety assessments for diverse traffic alternatives in a safe and fast way may contribute to the improvement of safety in the roadway transportation.

A Study of a Model for Calculating Passing Sight Distance (추월시거 산정 모형에 관한 연구)

  • 추월가능성을 판단하기 위해서 앞을 바라볼 수 있어야 하는 거리를 추월시거라 한다. 적절한 추원시거의 확보는 2차선 도로의 효율성과 운전자의 안전성 제고 및 도로설계시 매우 중요하다. 이러한 목적을 위하여 추월시거를 산정할 수 있는 여러 모형이 개발되었으나, 실제 교통상황을 반영하기에 많은 문제점을 안고 있음이 지적되고 있다. 따라서 본 논문은 기존 모형들의 이론적 배경을 고찰하고, 각 모형의 단점과 한계를 파악하여, 운전자의 실제 추월형태를 고려한 새로운 추월시거산정모형을 개발하는데 주안점을 두고 있다. 본 논문에서 개발한 PASS모형은 현재 미국에서 도로설계시 기준으로 사용되고 있는 AASHTO모형을 보완하여 구축하였다. 기존의 모형들은 서로 다른 조건을 가정하여 개발되었기 때문에 각 모형들의 추월시거 산정값을 비교분석하는데 어려움이 있다. 하지만 PASS모형은 운전자의 반응시간, 차량의 길이, 차량의 가속능력 등 실제 추월시거 산정시 반드시 고려해야 할 중요한 요소들을 특성치로 반영할 수 있게 함으로써 다양한 추월 상황과 현실적인 교통상황을 폭넓게 수용할 수 있는 장점을 갖고 있다. 본 논문에서는 새로 개발한 P SS모형을 이용하여 얻은 결과와 기존의 AASHTO모형, MUTCD모형, Glennon모형을 통해 얻은 결과를 비교하였으며, PASS모형에 우리나라 현실에 적합한 특성치를 적용하여 2차로 도로의 추월시거를 산정하였다. 이 결과 현재 우리나라 도로용량편람에서 제시하고 있는 추월기능구간 기준인 450m가 설계속도가 낮은 일반국도에는 타당함을 확인할수 있었다. 그러나, 설계속도가 높은 화물타의 운행빈도가 높은 고속국도의 경우, 재검토가 필요할 것으로 판단된다.기존의 광유계 윤활제에 비하여 대단히 고가하는 문제점을 갖고 있다. 그러나 윤활 마찰면의 다양화와 가혹한 사용조건은 자성유체 윤활제의 연구개발 필요성을 크게 증대시키고 있다.xed Effects Model)을 결정하고, 각각에 해당하는 통계모형을 구축하였다. 이 결과 (1) 업종 및 기업규모별로 그룹간에 유의한 특성이 발견되었으며, (2) R&D 및 광고투자는 기업의 시장성과를 설명하는 중요한 변수이나, (3) R&D 투자의 경우는 광고에 비해 불확실성이 존재하는 것으로 나타났고, (4) 수리모형에서 도출된 한계원리가 통계모형에서도 유효한 것으로 드러났다.등을 토대로 한 10대 산업을 육성하기 위하여 과학기술부는 기술수요조사를 바탕으로 49개 주요기술을 도출하여, 과학기술 일류 국가 실현, 국민소득 2만불 달성이라는 국가적 슬로건을 내걸고 “차세대 성장동력” 창출을 위한 범정부차원의 기획과 연구비의 집중투자를 추진하고 있다.달성하기 위해서는 종합류류 전산망의 시급한 구축과 함께 화물차의 적재율을 높이고 공차율을 낮출 수 있는 운송체계의 수립이 필요한 것으로 판단된다. 그라나 이러한 화물전용차선의 효과는 단기적인 치유책일 수밖에 없기 때문에 물류유통 시설의 확충을 위한 사회간접자본의 구축을 서둘러 시행하여야 할 것이다.으로 처리한 Machine oil, Phenthoate EC 및 Trichlorfon WP는 비교적 약효가 낮았다.>$^{\circ}$E/$\leq$30$^{\circ}$NW 단열군이 연구지역 내에서 지하수 유동성이 가장 높은 단열군으로 추정된다. 이러한 사실은 3개 시추공을 대상으로 실시한 시추공 내 물리검층과

An Impact of Lane Speed Differentials on Lane-Changing Behavior (차로별 속도차가 차로변경에 미치는 영향)

  • 차로변경이 발생하는 두 가지 상황 즉, 강제 차로 변경과 선택적 차로 변경 중, 선택적 차로변경 상황에서 운전자가 수락 가능한 간격을 발견했을 때, 차로별 속도 차가 차로 변경 의사결정에 미치는 영향을 모사할 수 있는 모형식을 추정하였다. 즉, 선택적 차로 변경은 운전자의 차로 변경 여부에 대한 상황판단과 함께 목적 차로의 간격 수락여부에 대한 의사결정으로 이루어지는데, 본 논문에서는 목적 차로에 수락 가능한 간격이 존재할 경우 차로별 속도차가 운전자의 의사결정에 어떤 영향을 미치는지에 대해 분석하였다. 이를 위해, 운전자 의 의사결정에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 다른 요소 즉, 중차량, 기하구조, 및 합·분류의 영향을 최소화하는 지점을 선택하여 표본조사를 실시하였으며, 보다 설명력 있는 모형식을 얻기 위해 상관분석 등을 수행하여 불필요하다고 생각되는 변수는 제외시켰다. 또한, 운전자의 희망속도와 주행 속도 차에 의한 영향을 반영하기 위해 현 차로 속도를 부가적인 변수로 추가하였으며, 계수추정은 통계패키지인 SAS를 이용하였는데, 자료분석에 있어, 속도차 구간에 따라 다른 간격수락 특성을 보여 차로별 속도차를 0∼2.0m/s구간과 2∼11.52m/s구간으로 나누어 분석을 수행하였다. 분석결과 속도차 0∼2.0m/s구간에서는 속도차가 증가할수록 차로 변경률이 높아졌으나, 2∼11.52m/s구간에서는 오히려 차로 변경률이 낮아지는 것으로 나타났는데, 이는 속도 차의 증감에 대해 운전자로 하여금 차로 변경을 유도하는 요소와 함께 저항하게 하는 요소가 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 분석결과. 2.0m/s 이상의 속도차에서 차로변경에 대한 저항이 상대적으로 크게 작용한다는 것을 알 수 있었으며, 도로 설계시 이를 반영하여 도로기하구조 및 안전성 등을 향상시킬 수 있을 것으로 보인다.

Effectiveness Analysis for Traffic and Pedestrian Volumes of Pedestrian Pushbutton Signal (차량 및 보행자 교통량에 따른 보행자 작동신호기의 효과 분석)

  • Because usually signal controllers on the crosswalks of mid-block provide pedestrian signals every cycle based on the fixed signal plan, pedestrian signals are provided even when there is no pedestrian demand. Consequently, signal is operated inefficiently and this may cause drivels to experience useless delay or violate the signal. Even though recently pushbuttons have been installed to improve the efficiency of pedestrian signal control in the crosswalks of mid-block and the pedestrian safety. they are not spread out national-wide in Korea because of the cost of the pushbutton equipments and the lack of an acknowledgement of the efficiency of the pushbutton. In this study, the effectiveness of the pushbutton on saving the vehicle delay was verified through before and after study in 4 study sites using a traffic micro-simulation model, VISSIM. To evaluate the viability of the pushbutton, a benefit/cost analysis was also performed for 4 study sites. It was found that B/C ratio of all of 4 study sites was greater than 1. The sensitivity analysis for the traffic volume and pedestrian volume were performed to identify the impact of the both volume on the operation of pushbutton. And, a benefit/cost analysis was performed for all scenarios. It was found that when the pedestrian volume is greater than 90ped/h, the pedestrian signal was operated same as the fixed signal plan. That is, there is no benefit of pushbutton at all once the pedestrian volume is greater than 90ped/h. When the pedestrian volume is equal to or less than 90ped/h and the traffic volume is greater than 2,500veh/h, B/C ratio is greater than 1. Also it was found that as traffic volume increases and pedestrian volume decreases, the benefit increases. In this study, the criteria for installation of pushbutton on the crosswalks of mid-block are developed through the sensitivity analysis and benefit/cost analysis. The results of this study may be used as a criteria for expansion of pushbutton system.

A basic study on the hazard of hydrogen feul cell vehicles in road tunnels (도로터널에서 수소차 위험에 관한 기초적 연구)

  • Hydrogen is a next-generation energy source, and according to the roadmap for activating the hydrogen economy, it is expected that industries to stably produce, store, and transport of hydrogen as well as the supply of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles will be made rapidly. Accordingly, safety measures for accidents of hydrogen vehicles in confined spaces such as tunnels are required. In this study, as part of a study to ensure the safety of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in road tunnels, a basic investigation and research on the risk of fire and explosion due to gas leakage and hydrogen tank rupture among various hazards caused by hydrogen fuel cell vehicle accidents in tunnels was conducted. The following results were obtained. In the event of hydrogen fuel cell vehicle accidents, the gas release rate depends on the orifice diameter of TPRD, and when the gas is ignited, the maximum heat release rate reaches 3.22~51.36 MW (orifice diameter: 1~4 mm) depending on the orifice diameter but the duration times are short. Therefore, it was analyzed that there was little increase in risk due to fire. As the overpressure of the gas explosion was calculated by the equivalent TNT method, in the case of yield of VCE of 0.2 is applied, the safety threshold distance is analyzed to be about 35 m, and number of the equivalent fatalities are conservatively predicted to reach tens of people.
