  • This study analyzed the academic achievements on above-level testing of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and English in newly entering students of science specialized high schools. It can be expected that newly students of science high specialized schools have reached ceiling level in the middle school mathematics and science academic scores. Above-level testing(or off-level testing) is a test tool used to evaluate student's ability which are above-grade level. In this study, above-level testing tools were used to develop the same type examination paper of the 2013 Korean College Scholastic Ability Test(CSAT) in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and English. The conclusions of this study were as follow: First, the academic achievement level of science specialized high school freshmen were higher the average level of general high school senior because that over 50% of them are within the 5 grade of CSAT in mathematics, physics, and chemistry. In English, 19.3% science specialized high school freshmen have reached within the 5 grade of CSAT. Second, as a result of examining characteristics of academic achievement with respect to units of subjects, in mathematics, it was showed that the academic achievement of 'continuity and limit of a function' unit was higher, 'statistics' unit was lower. In physics, the academic achievement of 'Electricity and Magnetism' unit was higher, 'Waves and particles' unit was lower. In chemistry, the academic achievement of 'compounds in life' unit was higher, 'Air' unit was lower. In English, the academic achievement of 'practical sentence' of reading area was higher, 'Sentence' of writing area was lower. • Currently Science and technology are changing so fast these days, educating competent and creative person, majoring in natural sciences, including mathematics., becoming more and more important. But, in Korea, there are many problems in high school and university education program, so performance level in mathematics is decreasing and avoiding mathematics and natural sciences is increasing. Naturally the numbers of science oritented students in high school are decreasing and ability in mathematics, in particular calculus, is decreasing. Hence, the above situation leads to a reduction of scientific manpower. In this point of a view, we analyse the situation of the downturn of the ability of the science, especially calculus, among engineering majored freshmen. We also study many data reported by Ministry of Education and Science, Korea and scholar societies. From this study we conclude that the essential rerasons for the above situations are curriculum and the system of the entrance examination of the university, and we give suggestions for solutions of such a situation.

  • This study attempted to survey the present status of the eight students who, 17 years from now, had participated in a special program for 170 days preparing for early entrance to the KAIST. With six students who responded to the questionnaire previously sent, the study focused on each participant's achievement at present, his evaluation on Accelerated Education, his personal opinions on early entrance to university and Gifted Science Education. From the survey, we could find out that three participants had received a doctorate and they are currently working as researchers at research center or professors at university. The other three participants are working as researchers at research center after receiving the M. S. Academic achievements vary according to each participant, but three of them, who ranked high in research achievement, had their articles published in international journals of the SCI level even when they were between 25 and 28 of age. Two of them in particular showed outstanding engineering and developing the commercial modem for IMT 2000 for the first time in Korea. One participant entered Harvard University to major in physics and afterwards studied the law in UCLA. He is now a professor in the law department. Concerning the evaluations on Accelerated Education and early entrance system, four participants answered positively while two participants expressed negative attitudes. When asked their opinions on the Gifted Education in Korea, such problems were pointed out as too much pressure of entering the first-class universities, the tendency to avoid choosing science-related major at universities, the lack of education system that encourages creative thinking, etc. It is necessary that the accelerated education play an important role to maximize their hidden potentials. It remains to be seen in what places these six participants will find themselves and of what ideas they will come up within the next 17 years. It will be worthwhile to wait until then for another survey.

  • To evaluate the educational programs at Science Education Center for the Gifted (SECG) on how it had influenced its graduates, we have surveyed the graduates with questionnaires categorized into four sections: scientific motivation, self-confidence, knowledge/inquiry activities, and peer-to-peer interactions. Of the graduates who studied at SECG for more than two years and are currently attending college, we questioned 26 students and interviewed 10 students. According to our research data, most students evaluated highly the quality of education they received at SECG; especially, in the areas of science knowledge/inquiry activities and social interactions with their peers. Based on the results from the interviews, for these gifted students with highly developed aptitude in science, we concluded that interactions with real-world scientists, investigative approach to and application of newly-learned scientific concepts, and emphasis on interactive activities with other gifted students at SECG were regarded as effective in promoting motivations towards science and self-confidence.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of major satisfaction in the relationship between academic self-efficacy and academic achievement among nursing students. Methods: Data were collected from 142 nursing students from March 5 to March 9, 2018, and the collected data were analyzed using SPSS version 21.0 for Windows. Results: Academic self-efficacy had a significant effect on both major satisfaction (${\beta}=.31$, p<.001), and academic achievement (${\beta}=.43$, p<.001). The parameter of major satisfaction was found to have a significant effect on the dependent variable, academic achievement (${\beta}=.22$, p=.007), and the independent variable, academic self-efficacy, also had a significant effect on academic achievement (${\beta}=.39$, p<.001). Thus, major satisfaction was found to have a partial mediating effect on the relationship between academic self efficacy and academic achievement. The Sobel test showed that the path of the academic achievement and academic self efficacy variables was significantly mediated by major satisfaction (Z=2.99, p=.003). Conclusion: Academic self-efficacy was found to affect academic achievement, and major satisfaction was found to play a partial mediating role in the relationship between academic self efficacy and academic achievement.
