Characteristics of Heat Transfer of Natural Convection for Magnetic Fluids in Annular Pipes (이중원관내 자성유체의 자연대류에 대한 전열특성)

  • Compared with Newtonial fluids, magnetic fluids have effects on magnetic force. In this study, the purpose is to research the heat transfer characteristic of magnetic fluids which have metalic and fluid characteristics as the external pipe is being cooled and internal pipe is heated. This study found the experimental results from the study of the variety of natural convection for magnetic fluids and the characteristics of the heat transfer by using numerical analysis according to the strength and direction of the magnetic fields from being imposed from the outside. Natural convection of magnetic fluids was controlled by the impressed magnetic fields, and the result of mean nusselt number was calculated. If the impressed magnetic field is in the direction of gravity or the strength of impressed magnetic field is more than -14 mT in the opposite direction, the heat transfer is more than that without the impressed magnetic field. If the strength of impressed magnetic field is less than -14 mT in the opposite direction, it is smaller than that without the impressed magnetic field. Especially, when the strength of the magnetic field is -14 mT, the heat transfer was at the minimum.

Experimental Study on Coefficient of Flow Convection (유수대류계수에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Pipe cooling method is widely used for reduction of hydration heat and control of cracking in mass concrete structures. However, in order to effectively apply pipe cooling systems to concrete structures, the coefficient of flow convection relating the thermal transfer between inner stream of pipe and concrete must be estimated. In this study, a device measuring the coefficient of flow convection was developed. Since a variation of thermal distribution caused by pipe cooling has a direct effect on internal forced flows, the developed testing device is based on the internal forced flow concept. Influencing factors on the coefficient of flow convection are mainly flow velocity, pipe diameter and thickness, and pipe material. Using experimental results from the developed device, the coefficient of flow convection was calculated. Finally, a general prediction model was proposed by theoretical procedures. The proposed prediction model is able to estimate the coefficient of flow convection with flow velocity and material properties of pipe. From comparison with experimental results, the coefficient of flow convection by this model was well agreed with those by experimental results.

Variation of time-dependent convection beat transfer coefficients in beat transfer analysis at various initial beating rates of tunnel fire scenarios (요소제거모델을 활용한 열전달해석에서 터널 화재이력곡선의 초기가열구배에 따른 대류열전달계수의 변화)

  • The initial heating rate is well known as one of the most influencing factors on the occurrence of spalling and the loss of strength in concrete after fire initiation. In this study, a series of fire tests were carried out at different initial heating rates to find out its effects on the deterioration of tunnel structural members. Heat transfer analyses combined with an element elimination model were also carried out to verify its applicability in the same conditions as the fire tests. Moreover, the convection heat transfer coefficients compatible with fire test results were derived from parametric studies. In this course, their time-dependent variations were also analyzed at different initial heating rates. Finally, a numerical formula to estimate the heat transfer coefficients at the various initial heating rates was proposed by the interpolation of the results of numerical analyses.

  • Optimization of the asymmetric trapezoidal fin with various upper lateral surface slope is made using a two-dimensional analytic method. For the fixed fin base height, the optimum heat loss, fin length and effectiveness are represented as inner fluid convection characteristic number, fin base thickness, fin base height, fin shape factor and ambient convection characteristic number. For this optimum procedure, the optimum heat loss is defined as 95% of the maximum heat loss from the fin. One of the results shows that optimum heat loss and effectiveness seems independent of the fin shape factor while optimum fin length decreases almost linearly as the fin shape factor increases.

  • Five finite difference schemes (explicit, Bresler, implicit, upstream, and Chaudhari scheme) for the convective dispersion model are analyzed numerically to investigate their characteristics and applicabilities. Camparative study results show that the conditionally stable Chaudhari scheme has the smallest numerical dispersion and that the unconditionally stable Bresler scheme has the overshooting in regions of oscillation. Explicit scheme is the most accurate for a dispersion-dominated flow whereas Chaudhari scheme is for a convection-dominated flow. The computation time (CPU) is the shortest for the explicit or Chaudhari scheme with the same order of magnitude and is always the longest for the Bresler scheme.

  • Experimental results of $30^{\circ}-15^{\circ}$ nozzles were compared with numerically calculated convective heat transfer coefficients using FLUENT, Boundary Layer Integration Method and Bartz predictions. Also, the convective heat transfer coefficients were calculated by using FLUENT and boundary layer integration method for NASA HIPPO nozzles according to the characteristics of combustion gas and the correlation between pressure and pressure was compared. Finally, thermal analysis of NASA HIPPO nozzle was performed to compare the ablation thickness and char depth according to the combustion gas characteristics.

  • 감압비등에 의한 미립화는 더 미세한 직경의 액적을 얻을 수 있고, 분무각이 증가하며, 더 좋은 혼합특성을 갖는 다는 점에서 단순 압력식 미립화와 차이가 난다. 감압비등이란 과열된 액체를 포화 압력 이하의 대기 중으로 분사하여 급격한 비등에 의해 이루어지는 미립화이다. 본 연구는 금속 연료를 이용한 추진기관의 산화제인 물 공급기술에 감압비등과정을 이용한 와류분무를 적용시키기 위해 수행됐다. 분열길이와 같은 거시적 특성은 Charge-Couple Device(CCD) 카메라를 이용해 측정하였고, Sauter Mean Diameter(SMD)와 SMD분포와 같은 미시적 특성은 Global Sizing Velocimetry(GSV) 시스템을 이용해 측정했다. 실험은 압력과 온도, 대류 속도를 변화시키며 진행했다.

Decision of Representative Moving Direction of Storm on Watershed (대상유역에서 호우의 대표 이동방향 결정)

  • 본 연구에서는 하천유역에 대한 호우의 대표 이동방향을 결정하였다. 대상유역으로는 내성천 유역을 고려하였으며, 101개의 호우사상을 선정하여 각각의 호우사상별로 방향적 특성을 분석하였다. von Mises 분포의 주방향을 이용하여 모든 호우사상의 대표 이동방향을 결정하고, 이를 이용하여 내성천 유역에 대한 호우 대표 이동방향을 결정하였다. 아울러 호우 발생특성별(장마, 태풍, 대류성 강우)로 호우의 방향적 특성을 분류하여 각각의 특성이 구분될 수 있도록 하였다. 적용 결과, 태풍에 의한 호우의 이동방향은 기존 연구결과와 유사하게 주로 북동 방향으로 진행되었으며, 장마와 대류성 강우에 의한 호우가 대표방향 결정에 가장 큰 영향력을 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 아울러 대상유역에 대한 호우의 대표 이동방향은 mode의 특성이 뚜렷하게 한 방향으로 나타나며, 내성천 유역의 경우 대표 호우 이동방향은 59.45도로 결정되었다. 이러한 결과는 한반도에 발생하는 강우의 특성과도 잘 부합하는 것으로 판단된다.

Estimation of the Convective Boundary Layer Height Using a UHF Radar (UHF 레이더를 이용한 대류 경계층 고도의 추정)

  • The enhancement of the refractive index structure parameter $C_n^2$ often occurs where vertical gradients of virtual potential temperature ${\theta}_v$ and mixing ratio q have their maximum values. The $C_n^2$ can be a very useful parameter for estimating the convective boundary layer(CBL) height. The behavior of $C_n^2$ peaks, often used to locate the height of mixed layer, was investigated in the present study. In addition, a new method to determine the CBL height objectively using both $C_n^2$ and vertical air velocity variance ${\sigma}_w$ data of UHF radar was also suggested. The present analysis showed that the $C_n^2$ peaks in the backscatter intensity profiles often occurred not only at the top of the CBL but also at the top of a residual layer or at a cloud layer. The $C_n^2$ peaks corresponding to the CBL heights were slightly lower than the CBL heights derived from rawinsonde sounding data when vertical mixing owing to weak solar heating was not significant and the height of strong vertical ${\theta}_v$ gradients were not consistent with that of strong vertical q gradients. However, the $C_n^2$ peaks corresponding to the CBL heights were in good agreement with the rawinsonde-estimated CBL hegiths when vertical mixing owing to solar heating was significant and the vertical gradient of both ${\theta}_v$ and q in the entrainment zone was very strong. The maximum backscatter intensity method, which determines the height of $C_n^2$ peak as the CBL height, correctly estimated the CBL height when the $C_n^2$ profile had single peak, but this method erroneously estimated the CBL height when there was a residual layer or a cloud layer over the top of the CBL. The new method distinguished when there the CBL height from the peak due a cloud layer or a residual layer using both $C_n^2$ and ${\sigma}_w$ data, and correctly estimated the CBL height. As for estimation of diurnal variation of the CBL height, the new method backscatter intensity method even if the vertical profile of backscatter intensity had two peaks from the CBL height and a residual layer or a cloud layer.

A Basic Experimental Study on Performance of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell System for Vehicle (PEM 연료전지 자동차 적용을 위한 성능실험에 관한 기초연구)

  • Not only study of fuel cell performance but study of fuel cell application is very important, therefore these studies were paralleled together for the commercialization of exciting power generation. The objective of this study is to determine the characteristics of shaft power and efficiency as a function of rpm and to compare natural convection air method to forced air method. From these results, performance of forced air was better than that of natural convection air because it enables to improve mass transportation by increasing air flow rate. With decreasing shaft power, efficiency of fuel cell decreases remarkably because dc motor drives at the low range of efficiency. Fuel cell powered vehicle has to be driven considering efficiency and shaft power. It should be driven at 35-45% of efficiency and 0.55-0.75v/cell.
