  • The digital divide has become an important social issue in the two waves of informatization and aging society. This study is to comprehensively examine various theoretical approaches and discussions on the mechanisms of the digital divide and to synthetically understand the features of the digital divide in old age. This study examines 1) four theoretical approaches on the mechanisms of digital divide among people in general, 2) three theoretical perspectives and six specific explanations on the digital divide in old age, and 3) five controversial features and concepts of the digital divide in old age. Consequently, this study suggests the need for a comprehensive approach to the multi-dimensional digital divide in old age and more attention to the digital divide in old age in terms of individual well-being and social inequalities. Further implications and limitations are discussed.

  • As we are entering the information society, there are increasing concerns about information gaps which are believed to create serious obstacles to social integration and development. Previous studies on the information gaps in Korea, despite their contributions to our understanding of the issue, appear to be descriptive. This study attempts to analyze the relative importance of residential area, gender, age education, and household income for information gaps and their changes in recent years. Based on the data from two surveys conducted by the Information Culture Center, the study run multivariate logit model analysis of the sue of computer and internet. The result shows that all the variables except residential area have influences on the use of computer and internet. In terms of time change, gender-based difference in the use of digital media has decreased between 1998 and 2000 while the differences by all the other variables have remained constant or increased.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of women 's perception of economic risk on the fertility gap. This study analyzed how the economic risks such as the risk of unemployment and poverty, the risk of housing insecurity, the risk of financial instability and the risk of economic downturn affects the gap between the actual number of children and the ideal number of children. For this purpose, exploratory factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were performed using the KGSS(Korean General Social Survey) 2014 dataset. The result of the analysis shows that women who perceived economic risk seriously had fewer children but had a higher fertility gap. This study suggested policy suggestions based on the above results.

  • The purpose of this study was to suggest policy implications for bridging digital divide of the students of multicultural background. Specifically, through maximizing equity of Information technology, the current study suggested the need for greater intervention and comprehensive strategies in the interests of a socially inclusive information society, of benefit to the IT disadvantaged. To achieve the research goal, I reviewed a variety of policy reports and previous studies related to the issue of digital divide and multicultural education, and draw useful implications for the policy change. The major research results were as the following: a policy change in a support of personal computer toward public place rather than individual home, widening use of e-learning service as a tool for bridging the digital divide, and the training for teachers and parents to provide an effective education to reduce the digital divide.

  • This study aims to identify the main factors that caused the digital divide during the COVID-19 pandemic. Utilizing data from the 2020 and 2021 Digital Divide Surveys by the National Information Agency, a research model was constructed for analysis using SmartPLS 4, applying PLS-SEM and Multigroup Analysis methods. The results of the study are as follows. First, combining 2020 and 2021, mobile internet usage during COVID-19 is positively associated with digital skills, digital usage, and usage outcomes except for networking. Second, the impact of digital usage was significantly higher during the outbreak than during the beginning of COVID-19, which may be due to the increased demand for digital usage as the outbreak continued, and the corresponding increase in internet usage. Third, we discovered that demographics are not the main factor affecting changes in mobile internet use during the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, digital literacy affects mobile usage, which is the most important one. The results show the importance of creating programs to teach people how to use technology appropriately. We propose that digital literacy should be central to training programs for people who use digital services.

  • This study began with the fact that the relationship between eductional environments and housing price needs to be understood in the context of the structuring of socio-spatial disparity. In other words, this paper focuses on the fact that the eduction with public features and functions plays a role of housing price determination and the rising price is privatized only to cause socio-spatial inequality. The study first examines how the education factors determine the housing price and cause increasing social inequality in Seoul at the macro level. It also carried out more detailed quantitative analysis on the relationship between educational environment factors and housing price with the case study of Yangcheon-gu, Seoul. This study found out that the close relationship between educational environment, housing price and social disparity at various spatial scales. It also figured out the the educational environment factors play an important role of housing price determination as much as material features per se. This means that the relationship between education, housing price and inequality needs to be dealt with not just socially but also in spatial perspective. In addition, the housing price determination is not just technical research but an social science issue in the context of rising socio-spatial disparity. This study is of only significance as a starting point of promising related researches in the future and much more efforts will be needed.

  • A wireless sensor network needs to consist of multi-sensors in order to infer a high level of information on circumstances. Data fusion, in turn, is required to utilize the data collected from multi-sensors for the inference of information on circumstances. The current paper, based on Dempster-Shafter's evidence theory, proposes data fusion in a wireless sensor network with different weights assigned to different sensors. The frequency of events per sensor is the crucial element in calculating different weights of the data of circumstances that each sensor collects. Data fusion utilizing these different weights turns out to show remarkable difference in reliability, which makes it much easier to infer information on circumstances.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the heterogeneity of compensating wage differentials for outdoor workers, under the threat of climate change and heatwave, by region and by wage quantile. This study conducted Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition, multiple regression analysis by region, and unconditional quantile regression analysis using the Korean Working Conditions Survey, which provides individual-level information on the working environment and worker's characteristics. The implications derived from the results of the study are as follows: For most variables, the endowment effect and the price effect were greater for indoor workers, while experience and gender played a role in narrowing the wage gap; The compensating wage differentials for outdoor workers were confirmed to be 2.4% nationwide, depending on the region however, the compensating wage differentials varied from 5 times of national average to nothing statistically significant; The higher the wage quantile, the greater the compensating wage differentials for outdoor workers, and statistically significant monetary compensation was not identified for some low-level outdoor workers. This study is meaningful as an early study that revealed the heterogeneity of compensating wage differentials for outdoor workers and suggested further research on the topic.

  • This study aims to convey some results of a survey to professionals in the fields of territorial studies and information studies, mainly concerned with spatial implications of the informatization processes, and to draw some policy implications. Overall findings of the survey show that, along with jnformatization processes, there is high possibility of enforcing the functions and role of the metropolitan Seoul while diffusion of population and polarization reversal is quite feasible to some degree. The extension of large cities will be possible but with some limitations while urban structure will be characterized with limited functional segmentation and the emergence of multi-centers. It is prospected that there will be higher possibility of achieving regionally balanced development by informatization processes.
