The study was carried out to investigate the effects of polymer, calcium, perlite and chitosan on the growth of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L., PR) and to provide a basic information needed for their practical application when establishing garden, parks, athletic field and golf courses with these materials. A total of 24 treatment combinations were applied in the study. Treatments were made of water-swelling polymer (WSP), calcium, perlite and chitosan mixed in soil organic amendment (SOA). Germination rate, turfgrass coverage, turfgrass density and top growth were evaluated in PR under greenhouse conditions. Significant differences were observed for these growth characteristics among the treatments. Turfgrass density and plant height, evaluated on a weekly basis, varied with time after seeding. A proper mixing rate of WSP was considered to be lower 3% for the growth of PR with an exception of being below 6% for turfgrass density. Germination rate and early survival capacity were greatly influenced by calcium and chitosan among the elements of calcium, perlite, and chitosan. But there was little effect by perlite. Calcium and chitosan were most effective one for turfgrass density and coverage, respectively. Top leaf-growth was influenced by all three elements, but the greatest effect was highly linked with calcium. Chitosan was very effective in early germination and vertical leaf growth, as compared with the others. Future studies are required for measuring the effect of WSP, calcium, perlite and chitosan on the turf growth characteristics in root zone mixtures of sand+SOA before a practical field use.
Effects of the various dietary additives on growth and tolerance of abalone Haliotis discus hannai to the stresses were determined in the 16-week feeding trial. Seventy juvenile (an initial body weight of 4.2 g) abalone per container were randomly distributed into 21, 50 L plastic rectangular containers each. The six kinds of experimental diets were prepared: control (CON) with no additive, by-product of green tea (BPG), extract of figs (EF), extract of green tea (EG), commercially available product of Hearok (PH), and Haematococcus (HC). In addition, dry sea tangle (ST) was prepared to compare the efficiency of the experimental diets. Fishmeal, soybean meal and shrimp head meal were used as the protein source, and dextrin, sea tangle powder and wheat flour, and soybean oil and fish oil were used as the carbohydrate and lipid sources, respectively in the experimental diets. The experimental diets were fed to abalone once a day at a satiation level with a little leftover. The feeding trial lasted for 16 weeks. At the end of the 16-week feeding trial, abalone was exposed to the different types of stresses (air exposure, and sudden changes of rearing temperature and salinity). Survival of abalone fed the sea tangle was highest. However, weight gain of abalone fed the EF, EG and PH diets was significantly (P<0.05) higher than that of abalone fed the BPG diet or dry sea tangle. Shell length of abalone fed the all experimental diets was significantly (P<0.05) higher than that of abalone fed the dry sea tangle. Accumulated mortality of abalone fed the sea tangle was low when exposed to the different types of stresses. Also, relatively low mortality was achieved in abalone fed the HC and EF diets. In considering these results, it can be concluded that the various sources of additives is effective to improve production of abalone, and Haematococcus and extract of figs can be considered as dietary additives to improve resistance of abalone against the different types of stresses.
Several experiments were conducted to investigate the germination characteristics among the Rumex crispus, R. japonicus, R. obtusifolius, and R. nipponicus. The germination point of R. japonicus was started 4 days after application, and then R. obtusifolius (5th), R. crispus (6th), R. nipponicus (10th) with appeared order. The optimum temperatures for germination of all tested Rumex spp. occurred at the $15^{\circ}C$. Especially, R. obtusifolius will have the widest germination range at $10^{\circ}C{\sim}30^{\circ}C$. To compared with 1996 and 2004 year selected R. japonicus germination were did not significantly difference, otherwise, all tested Rumex spp. on dark condition was not germinated. The parameters of germination characteristics of Rumex spp. were investigated mean germination rate (MGR, %), mean germination time (MGT, day), mean germination velocity (MGV, No./day), and coefficient of germination uniformity (CGU). The R. japonicus compared in tested Rumex spp. showed the highest MGR. The MGT and MGV of R. obtusifolius was appeared the earliest compared with R. obtusifolius and R. crispus.

To preserve genetic materials, cryopreservation of the semen from live animals is the main technique to establish cryo-banking system which could be used for artificial insemination and embryo transfer. However, the population of Korean black goat (KBG) becomes to dwindle in number and is now faced genetic erosion by crossbreeding with non-native breeds in small KBG farms. In this study, simple freezing method was used to preserve frozen semen from KBG using spermatozoa of cauda epididymis (CE) and electro-stimulated semen (ES). The negative effects of seminal plasma on fresh sperm was confirmed using precipitation test of Triladyl egg yolk diluent and sperm viability after thawing was compared between CE and ES spermatozoa. When seminal plasma of fresh ES semen was washed with semen washing media (SWM), the rates of live sperm shown no significant difference between CE and ES spermatozoa before freezing. However, the survival rate of frozen/thawed CE sperm was higher than ES ($74.6{\pm}10.6%$ vs $53.8{\pm}5.2%$) with significant difference (p < 0.05). The results of longevity test on frozen/thawed sperm from CE showed healthier sperm than ES. Therefore, spermatozoa from CE could be used for cryo-banking system in KBG lines. The more studies are needed to increase survival rate of ES semen.

A reverse transcriptase loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) assay was evaluated to monitor infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) from artificially infected rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. The cumulative mortalities of fish challenged with IHNV at $10^{6.5}\;TCID_{50}$/fish, $10^{5.5}\;TCID_{50}$/fish and $10^{4.5}\;TCID_{50}$/fish were 40%, 0% and 0%, respectively. Dead fish and survivors at 16 and 28 d post-challenge in each group were employed for IHNV detection by RT-LAMP assay and virus isolation using BF-2 cells. IHNV from $10^{4.3}$ to $10^{6.8}\;TCID_{50}/ml$ was isolated from all the dead fish and also detected in all of the examined dead fish by RT-LAMP assay. In survivors at 16 d, 60% (3/5 fish, $10^{2.8}-10^{5.05}\;TCID_{50}/ml$), 20% (1/5 fish, $10^{1.05}\;TCID_{50}/ml$) and 60% (3/5 fish, $10^{1.05}-10^{4.8}\;TCID_{50}/ml$) were found to be IHNV-positive by virus isolation in fish challenged with IHNV at $10^{6.5}\;TCID_{50}$/fish, $10^{5.5}\;TCID_{50}$/fish and $10^{4.5}\;TCID_{50}$/fish, respectively, while 20% (1/5 fish), 0% (0/5 fish) and 20% (1/5 fish) were IHNV-positive by RT-LAMP assay. No IHNV was detected in the survivors at 28 d and control fish. These results indicate that the RT-LAMP assay is useful for detection of IHNV in diseased fish although it is not enough to monitor virus in IHNV-survivors.

Purpose : We evaluated the radiological and functional results of prosthetic reconstruction for locally aggressive benign and malignant tumor in the lower extremity. Materials and Methods : Eighty eight patients were followed up for an average 76 months(22~174). We examined the survival rate of prosthesis, and evaluated the final result by MSTS functional score and ISOLS radiological implants evaluation system. They were statistically analyzed according to the age(<20 year vs. ${\geq}$20 year), fixation methods, amount of bony resection, chemotherapy, local recurrence, and presence of metastasis. Results : The 5 year prosthetic survival rates were 100% in the proximal femur, 83.3% in the distal femur, 81.9% in the proximal tibia. Mean total functional scores were 73.3%, 72%, 68.7%, respectively. In distal femur, the non-chemotherapeutic group was superior in the prosthetic survival rate. Recurrence or metastasis affected the functions in the distal femur and proximal tibia. In the radiological evaluation of the distal femur, older patients over 20 years of age and with cement fixation were superior in bone remodeling(p<0.05). Postoperative infection and radiological loosening were the main causes of the prosthetic failure. Conclusion : The prosthetic reconstruction in the lower extremity led to good clinical and radiological results. Amount of bony resection, chemotherapy, recurrence and metastasis seemed to influence the prosthetic survival, and long-term follow-up will be necessary to investigate more significant prognostic factors.

The utility of Bacillus spp. organisms for reduction of dissolved hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) in white leg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) culture was tested with different combinations of Bacillus spp. microorganisms: combination A (B. subtilis + B. licheniformis); combination B (B. licheniformis + B. amyloliquefaciens); combination C (B. subtilis + B. licheniformis + B. amyloliquefaciens). Of these 3 combinations, C was effective in few hours after addition whereas B needed longer time to be effective. The $H_2S-reducing$ effect of combination C was dependent on the amount of microorganisms added to $H_2S-containing$ test solution. Exposure of white leg shrimp to $H_2S$ at 8 mg/L for 7 days led to survival of 80% and 1 mg/L for 14 days it was 82.5%. The survival rate was 97.5% when combination C was simultaneously added to shrimp tanks during $H_2S$ exposure at 1 mg/L for 14 days. It was demonstrated that combination C microorganisms (B. subtilis + B. licheniformis + B. amyloliquefaciens) can reduce dissolved $H_2S$ concentrations, and this effect can be utilized to protect white leg shrimp from $H_2S$ toxicity.

Temperature-dependent development and fecundity of apterious Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) were examined at six constant temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and $35{\pm}1.0^{\circ}C$, RH 50-70%, 16L:8D). Development time of nymphs decreased with increasing temperature and ranged from 42.9 days at $10^{\circ}C$ to 4.7 days at $30^{\circ}C$. The nymphs did not develop until adult at $35^{\circ}C$ because the nymphs died during the 2nd instar. The lower threshold temperature and thermal constant of nymph were estimated as $8.3^{\circ}C$ and 101.6 degree days, respectively. The relationships between development rates of nymph and temperatures were well described by the nonlinear model of Lactin 2. The distribution of development times of each stage was successfully fitted to the Weibull function. The longevity of apterious adults decreased with increasing temperature ranging from 24.0 days at $15^{\circ}C$ to 4.3 days at $30^{\circ}C$, with abnormally short longevity of 11.1 days at $10^{\circ}C$. R. padi showed the highest fecundity at $20^{\circ}C$ (38.2) and the lowest fecundity at $10^{\circ}C$ (3.9). In this study, we provided component sub-models for the oviposition model of R. padi: total fecundity, age-specific cumulative oviposition rate, and age-specific survival rate as well as adult aging rate based on the adult physiological age.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate 2 years cumulative survival rate of implants on augmented sinus area using MBCP, mixture of MBCP and ICB, and mixture of MBCP and autogenous bone by means of clinical and radiologic methods. Materials and Methods: In a total of 37 patients, 41 maxillary sinuses were augmented and 89 implant fixtures were installed simultaneously or after a regular healing period. The patients were divided in 3 groups: MBCP only, MBCP combined with ICB, MBCP combined with autogenous bone. After delivery of prosthesis, along 2 years of observation period, all implants were evaluated clinically and radiologically. And the results were as follows. Results: The results of this study were as follows. 1. A 2 year cumulative survival rate of implants placed with sinus augmentation procedure using MBCP was 97.75%. 2. Survival rate of implants using MBCP only was 97.62%, MBCP and ICB was 100%, MBCP and autogenous bone was 95%. There was no statistically significant difference between 3 groups. 3. Only 2 of 89 implants were lost before delivery of prosthesis, so it can be regarded as an early failure. And both were successfully restored by wider implants. Conclusion: It can be suggested that MBCP may have predictable result when used as a grafting material of sinus floor augmentation whether combined with other graft(ICB, autogenous bone) or not. And the diameter, length, location of implants did not have a significant effect on 2 year cumulative survival rate.

Background: Historically the Fontan operation in patients with single ventricle and heterotaxy syndrome has been associated with high mortality because of systemic or pulmonary anomalous venous drainage, incompetent common atrioventricular valve, right ventricle type univentricular heart, and arrhythmia. Material and Method: A retrospective review of 62 patients $(age:\;54.79\pm33.97\;months)$ with heterotaxy syndrome who underwent a extracadiac Fontan operation between 1996 and 2005 was performed. Twenty one patients had left atrial isomerism, and 41 had right isomerism. The Fontan procedure was staged in all but 2 patients, and a fenestration was less placed in left isomerism. Result: Left isomerism was associated more with interrupted inferior vena cava and pulmonary arteriovenous fistula, and right isomerism was associated more with anomalous pulmonary venous drainage, common atrioventricular valve and morphologic right ventricle. There were 3 hospital deaths$(4.8\%)$ and 3 late deaths $(5.2\%)$ with a follow-up duration of $48.8\pm31.0$ months. Eight-year survivals were $90.5\pm6.4\%$ in left isomerism and $88.6\pm5.4\%$ in right isomerism (p=0.94). At 8 years, freedom from reoperation was $73.9\pm11.3\%$ in left isomerism, and $82.3\pm6.7\%$ in right isomerism (p=0.87). Atrioventricular valve regurgitation progressed after Fontan operation in heterotaxy syndrome, and reoperation for pulmonary arteriovenous fistula and permanent pacemaker implantation for sinus node dysfunction were required more in left isomerism. Conclusion: The extracardiac Fontan operation can now be performed in patients with heterotaxy syndrome with excellent survival. However, morbidity in terms of postoperative atrioventricular valve regurgitation, arrhythmia, and pulmonary arteriovenous fistula remains significant.
