  • The primary purpose of this study was to examine the variables as related to self-determination in preschoolers. In order to meet the purpose of this study preschoolers' self-determination, their playfulness, self-regulation, and self-esteem as well as goodness of fit between mother and child were taken into account as study variables of interest. Furthermore, the mediating effect of preschoolers' self-esteem in the effects of study variables on their self-esteem was examined. Three hundred thirty seven preschooler(aged 6-7 years old)-mother pairs who attended public subsidized child care facilities, located in Seoul and Gyeongi province were sampled. The data were obtained from mother-filled surveys, and on-site observations from both head teachers of the children as well as trained researchers. The obtained data were analyzed by using SPSS 21.0, and structural equation model (SEM) was tested with AMOS 21.0. The main results of this study were in the following. First, it was proven that self-determination of the preschoolers' influenced directly or indirectly on their self-esteem, their playfulness, and self-regulation, as well as goodness of mother-child fit. Also, the result pertaining to the mediational effects of child's self-esteem in the effects of study variables of interest on the child's self-determination were revealed. Along with results of this study, there is a strong need to empower the preschoolers' self-determination through improvement of their self-esteem in early childhood education and care as well as in family settings.

  • This study purported to empirically examine joy expression and its cognitive and social contexts in children's play. The following question was asked: 1) What kind(s) of emotional expression(s) can be considered as a defining feature of play? 2) What cognitive/social play contexts are associated with joy expression. 30 children aged 3, 4, and 5 years were observed in terms of the length of each emotional expression at play/nonplay, and at cognitive/social play categories. The findings of this study showed that regardless of children's age and gender only joy expression could be considered as a defining feature of play, and that R&T play and chase games, or associative and cooperative social play were strongly related to joy expression. The findings were discussed in reference with existing assertions and perspectives, emphasizing the importance of joy expression in defining children's play despite of the predominance of interest expression in play. The findings were also discussed in reference with metacommunication functions and social construction of joy, considering cognitive/social contexts of joy. Implications for play researchers and practitioners were described in terms of developing playful learning strategies for childhood. Limitations of this study, and suggestions for further research were also provided.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze how father's play beliefs affect play flow and peer play behavior of young children, particularly as mediated by the father's play participation. For this purpose, 4 to 5-year-old children attending child care centers or kindergartens and their fathers were selected to participate in this study. Data on father's play beliefs and play participation were collected from the fathers, and data on the young children's play flow and peer play behavior from their teachers. Based on the collected data, the significance of the mediation model using Hayes's (2013) PROCESS macro was tested. According to the results of these analyses, the significant relationships between father's play beliefs and young children's play flow, reciprocal action of play and interruption of peer play were found mediated by father's play participation. This finding implies that father's play beliefs and his play participation may affect directly and indirectly the children's play flow and peer play behavior, underscoring the importance of father's play beliefs. In addition, the study's indicate that it is desirable to positively reinforce father's play beliefs by influencing father's play participation, in light of the likely positive influence of father's play beliefs over young children's social and emotional development.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an evaluation model to measure the core competences of actual play workers by exploring what competences are necessary for them to provide quality play. Based on literature review, we selected five core competences : knowledge of play, program development, understanding play culture, creativity, and information sharing & applying. In order to achieve the research purpose end, a two-round Delphi survey was conducted on 10 play and education experts. The findings drew scholarly consensus on the competences of play workers to have and proposed basic data by developing competences evaluation model to measure them. Each of the key competences has three sub-conpetences, each of which included two behavior elements. Furthermore, this study presented future research directions so that play can be voluntarily planned and supported in a social and cultural context.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of playfulness, play support beliefs and parenting stress on intimate parenting in the mothers of young children by maternal employment. In order to achieve this, 405 mothers of young children, aged 3-5 years old, participated in a self-reported survey. The data was analyzed by descriptive statistics using SPSS 19.0 and structural equation modeling and multigroup analysis using AMOS 21.0. The results of this study showed that the mothers' support beliefs and parenting stress mediated both playfulness and intimate parenting irrespective of maternal employment. Interestingly, the unemployed mothers' playfulness had direct effects on intimate parenting whereas the playfulness of the employed mothers did not. Lastly, the effects of the mothers' play support beliefs, playfulness, and parenting stress on intimate parenting did not differ between employed and unemployed mothers.

  • Noting that exorcism play and mask play are different in their ritual nature, this paper aims to examine their ritual through the social drama theory of Victor Turner, a cultural anthropologist. Turner views every incident in human history as a social drama and interprets it based on the four-step structural theory of breach, crisis, redressive action, and reintegration. In particular, he believes that the redressive phase takes place through a ritual solution rather than a legal or political solution in the village community. Based on such Turner's theory, Chapter 2 analyzes Yeonggamnori, Jeju's typical exorcism play, and explains the process leading to reintegration in accordance with peaceful ritual. Chapter 3 then analyzes the Puppet Play on the same principle and examines that redressive action is being resolved through a sacrificial ritual in the case of this play. Chapter 4 checks whether the results from the previous two plays show similar aspects in other traditional plays. To this end, the exorcism play will be analyzed for Jeju's Seocheon Flower Play, Junsangnori, Segyeongnori and Sanshinnori, while the mask play will include Bongsan Mask Dance, Yangju Byeonsandae Play, Goseong Ogwangdae and Hahoe Mask Dance. As a result of these studies, it is the main point of the study to prove that exorcism play and mask play are different in their ritual nature. However, this research is only in the stage of seeking differences in its ritual, and the review on the historical and social causes of differences is left as a research task at a later date.
