  • The purpose of this study was to determine psychosocial variables of exercise behaviors for old adults. A major research problem identified through theory of planned behavior and it's empirical data: Do cognitive-social variables(health risk perception, self-efficacy, group conformity, exercise attitude) significantly mediate exercise behaviors(intention, action, maintenance)? A total of 453 older adults above 65 years(171 males and 282 females) who were enrolled in various classes were randomly selected at adults centers in Seoul. Participants completed a battery of questionnaires including the psycho-social variables(health risk perception, self-efficacy, group conformity, exercise attitude) and exercise behaviors(intention, action, maintenance). The results of statistical procedures(e.g., hierarchical multiple regression) indicated self-efficacy and exercise attitude significantly predicted exercise intentions of older adults. Exercise intention was a significant predictor of action, and action was a significant predictor of exercise maintenance. In discussion, various psycho-social mechanisms were provided to interpret the results of this study, and future directions were suggested.

  • The authors developed 28 needs assessment tools for integrated assessment centered on needs, which is the core element in care management for the elderly in home. Also, the authors collected the assessment data of 676 elderly persons in home from 120 centers under the Korea Association of Senior Welfare Centers by using the needs assessment tools, and finally developed needs extraction algorithm through decision tree analysis in data mining to identify their actual needs and provide social welfare service suitable for such needs. The needs extraction algorithm for 28 needs of the elderly in home are summarized in

. The Need No. 8 "Having need of help in going out" of the decision-making model, for example, was divided into 80.3% of asking for help and 11.4% not asking for help with Appeal No. 23 as a major variable. The need increased by 87.9% when the elderly appealed for help to go out and they had a caregiver but decreased by 47.4% when they had no caregiver. When the elderly asked for help in going out, they had a caregiver, and they needed complete help in cleaning, their need of help in going out was shown as 94.2%. However, seen from their answer that they needed complete help in bathing of ADL even if they did not ask for help in going out, it was found that the need of help in going out sharply increased from 11.4% to 80.0%. On the other hand, when they needed partial help or self-supported in bathing, the potential for them to be classified as asking for help in going out was shown to be low as 7.7%. In the said decision-making model, the number of cases for parent node and child node was designated as 50 and 25, respectively, with level 5 of the maximum tree depth as stopping rule. By this, it was shown that their decision-making was found to be effective as 182.13% for the need "Having need of help in going out". The algorithm presented in this study can be useful as systematic and scientific fundamental data in assessment of needs of the elderly in home.

Material and methods: For this purpose, the researcher conducted a questionnaire survey and oral examination of 275 samples of old persons using 7 social welfare centers located in Daejeon metropolitan city. The oral health related quality of life was measured by GOHAI (Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index). Results: 1. The less age and the more education and the more subjective economic status and living with spouse of family status, the higher GOHAI showed. 2. Mean age of first using of removable denture is 62.11 years old and average life cycle of removable denture is 10.76years. 57.5% of study subjects use removable denture and complete denture user of study subjects are 13.8%. 3. In the case that they use fixed prostheses rather than removable ones and in the complete denture they use both sides (upper and lower) rather than single side, showed higher GOHAI. 4. In the case that they showed higher degrees of satisfaction with dental prostheses and can use them always and showed no necessity for new dental prostheses and denture adaptation is good, GOHAI showed higher. Conclusion: In order to improve oral health related quality of life among the elderly who have many missing teeth, it is required to restore their masticatory ability to the normal level by restoring the missing teeth which has lost its function through providing proper dental prostheses.

    • This study examines the longitudinal trends regarding awareness of informatization, Information Technology (IT) use, and attitudes towards IT among older adults aged 60 or over. Surveys were conducted in 2004 and 2014 at senior welfare centers in Seoul, Korea. The trends between 2004 and 2014 showed that the rate of Internet use increased among older adults who lived alone, were aged 70 or over, had middle education level, had low income, or were unemployed. Older adults had positive attitudes towards IT, and users were more positive than non-users. The levels of IT use were low among users, and their reasons for IT use were for psychological, emotional, and practical purposes. For non-users of IT, their passive tendencies toward IT use and informatization were amplified. As such, the state of IT use and attitudes toward it among older adults in Seoul were longitudinally different, and the differences in awareness and ability between users and non-users tended to increase.
