The aim of this paper is to analyze the changes in the travel pattern of public transit users, service satisfaction before and after public transportation system reform in Daegu. For this purpose, we conducted a survey of people on public transit users and the results of study are as follows : First, it was found that transfer trip had increased, especially concerning the changes of travel pattern from bus trip to the transfer trip between the bus and subway. Because it makes a financial sense to transfer based on free charge transfer system. Secondly, the transfer satisfaction was improved for public transit users, but they are still reluctant to use transfer system.

In cumulative transfer functions, as number of transfer increase, the impact of individual transfer to transfer cost increase linearly or non linearly. This function can effectively explain various passengers's travel behavior who choose their travel routes in integrated transit line networks including bus and railway modes. Using the function, it is possible to simulate general situations such that even though more travel times are expected, less number of transfer routes are preferred. However, because travel cost with cumulative transfer function is known as non additive cost function types in route search algorithms, finding an optimal route in integrated transit networks is confronted by the insolvable enumeration of all routes in many cases. This research proposes a methodology for finding an optimal path considering cumulative transfer function. For this purpose, the reversal phenomenon of optimal path generated in route search process is explained. Also a heuristic methodology for selecting an optimal route among multiple routes predefined by the K path algorithm. The incoming link based entire path deletion method is adopted for finding K ranking path thanks to the merit of security of route optimality condition. Through case studies the proposed methodology is discussed in terms of the applicability of real situations.
As transit networks are becoming more multimodal, the concept of connectivity of transit networks becomes important. This study aims to develop a quantitative model for measuring the connectivity of multimodal transit networks. To that end, we select, as evaluation measures of a transit line, its length, capacity, and speed. We then define the connecting power of a transit line as the product of those measures. The degree centrality of a node, which is a widely used centrality measure in social network analysis, is employed with appropriate modifications suited for transit networks. Using the degree centrality of a transit stop and the connecting powers of transit lines serving the transit stop, we develop an index quantifying the level of connectivity of the transit stop. From the connectivity indexes of transit stops, we derive the connectivity index of a transit line as well as an area of a multimodal transit network. In addition, we present a method to evaluate the connectivity of a transfer center using the connectivity indexes of transit stops and passenger acceptance rate functions. A case study shows that the connectivity evaluation model developed in this study takes well into consideration characteristics of multimodal transit networks, adequately measures the connectivity of transit stops, lines, and areas, and furthermore can be used in determining the level of service of transfer centers.

While transit is inconvenient, it is also inevitable for the efficient public transportation. Reducing the number of transfers as much as possible is most important in providing the convenience of public transportation and facilitating the public transportation. As for the public transportation card data, 61,986 items on weekdays and 69,100 items on weekends were collected. Pattern analysis and traffic influence factors were analyzed using traffic data card. Trip chain results revealed that people have more transit transfers for shopping and leasure than commuting purposes on weekends and that commuting distance and time increase by 10 km and 9.9 minutes, respectively. Besides, results of the structural equation model showed that factor 1(total travel time, total travel distance), factor 2(number of people getting on and off), factor 3(transit time), and factor 4(number of bus connections, number of operations) were found to have significant effects on the number of transfers.

In this paper, the current financial resource allocation principle and issues are studied in the beginning for the metropolitan transfer centers and connection transport facility. In addition to this, foreign cases for this matter are performed for the USA and Japan. Based on the foreign cases, the optimal subsidy ratio of central government is suggested. For the metropolitan transfer centers, at least 50% of subsidy is required from 30% at present and from "necessary costs" to "total costs." For connection transport facility, 50% for road facility and 70% for railway facility are proposed, which is not supported at all at present. As far as connection transport facility are concerned, resources allocation scheme between local governments has also been proposed in the proportional to the length of connection transport facility of each local government.

We present a methodology for modeling and solving the transit frequency design problem with variable demand. The problem is described as a bi-level model based on a non-cooperative Stackelberg game. The upper-level operator problem is formulated as a non-linear optimization model to minimize net cost, which includes operating cost, travel cost and revenue, with fleet size and frequency constraints. The lower-level user problem is formulated as a capacity-constrained stochastic user equilibrium assignment model with variable demand, considering transfer delay between transit lines. An efficient algorithm is also presented for solving the proposed model. The upper-level model is solved by a gradient projection method, and the lower-level model is solved by an existing iterative balancing method. An application of the proposed model and algorithm is presented using a small test network. The results of this application show that the proposed algorithm converges well to an optimal point. The methodology of this study is expected to contribute to form a theoretical basis for diagnosing the problems of current transit systems and for improving its operational efficiency to increase the demand as well as the level of service.
In the case of the feeder bus route choice, it is more desirable to choose the route by treating as a single route linked from origin to destination than the whole network. This study is to establish a concept that frames the feeder bus route choice technique for the change of the existing single bus route or the creation of the new feeder bus route. The concept of the feeder bus route choice technique in this study is not to frame the whole bus network but to frame a single route to a unit O-D pair. So, this study has the assumption that does not consider the waiting and transfer time at the bus stop. This system technique consists of the following phases: I) limitation of the road network examined for the study, ii) enumeration of the appropriate candidate routes by the permissive route length, and iii) determination of the optimum bus route by the route evaluation value.

The bus transfer system has been extended from Seoul to Gyonggi province to provide better Seoul metropolitan area transit service in September, 2008. Moreover, the curved bus routes, except existing rapid bus routes, which cause longer travel time have been straightened out. Also, the Skip Stop operation suggested by passengers has been introduced to main stops in the newly added express bus lines. This study surveyed passengers service satisfaction for the recent adopted bus policies such as the transfer discount system and the express bus system in Seoul Metropolitan area. The survey results may be important foundation for future strategies for improvement. The survey included questionnaires about the importance and the satisfaction level on both quantitative and qualitative factors. The results were statistically analyzed by the modified IPA (Importance-Performance Analysis). As the result of the survey, the newly adopted services such as fare system, fare discount on transferring, travel time savings and increased number of stops are economically feasible and satisfactory, whereas the accessibility to stops, ventilation and air quality in vehicles are the priorities to be improved. Also, the safety and the information system is in need of improvement.
This paper studies on the optimal bus network design in the framework of the set covering theory. The theory enables to cover passenger's loading and alighting areas as the set, and maximize the covering set as much as possible. In other words, it calculates the minimal set of the bus routes for covering whole bus passengers demand. After the optimal set of the bus routes is generated by the set covering theory, multimodal traffic equilibrium assignment is used for evaluating the generated set in terms of passenger's mode and route choice behavior. Whilst most previous works on it have been based on analyzing a specific route in a limited area, this study seeks to optimize the whole bus network.
