An Analysis of Balassa-Samuelson Effect by Panel Cointegration Test (패널공적분검정을 통한 발라사-사무엘슨 효과 분석)

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the Balassa-Samuelson effect that real exchange rate could deviate from its long-run equilibrium. To analyze this effect, I estimated the long-run relationship between real exchange and productivity using the dynamic panel ordinary least square(DOLS) and panel error correction model(ECM) after conducting the unit root and cointegration test. The results show that all variables except for the real exchange rate have the unit root. Then I conducted the cointegration test to find out whether there exist the stable long-run relationships. The results show that the variables are cointegrated and significant statistically. The DOLS and ECM methods are used to estimate the coefficient of the cointegrated variables. The major finding are that the estimates are statistically significant and that they show the same sign as the economic theory predicts.

What Hinders the Transition from Benefits Recipiency to Labor Market in the Korean Social Assistance Program? : In the case of working-age recipients (근로연령대 수급자의 탈빈곤 : 노동시장통합 결정 요인에 관한 연구)

  • This study is to identify the factors deterring or precipitating the exit from welfare recipiency to labor market in the Korean social assistance program. The results from the empirical analyses of the Korea Welfare Panel Study(KOWEPS) show that the duration dependency is not due to increasing welfare dependency with duration, but to the fact that longer stayers have many vulnerable conditions to escape from poverty. Particularly, the main factors determining the transition from recipiency to labor market are not individual or household characteristics such as human or social capital. Those having adolescents of secondary education in their households or participating in some effective labor market program such as job placement service tend to have significant effects on the exit rates from recipiency. That means that the institution-related factors such as the education and health supports combined with benefits and the effective labor market programs are important in the translation from recipiency to labor market of working-age recipients in the Korean social assistance scheme.

  • In this study, we examined the effect of non-cognitive factors on job tenure and tenure using KLIPS. We examine the internal consistency of the big5 personality trait and of the locus of control, and use the parameterized proportional hazards model. As a result, we confirmed that non-cognitive skill such as personality traits and locus of control affect individual labor market performance. Conscientiousness has shown that the job seeking period of adult job seekers is lengthened, thereby lowering the unemployment rate. It can be understood that high attentiveness under uncertainty can misinterpret information, and that lack of decision restricts escape from unemployment. In the tenure analysis, people with internal locus of control tendency were less likely to leave the job due to longer tenure. Those who have internal control can not only be preferred by the organization but also the internal control tendency seems to be the factor that maintains the long-term job because of the motivation and self-control of their actions.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the longitudinal causal relationship between organizational commitment and job satisfaction, focusing on security related workers. For this purpose, the Korean Labor and Income panel data were classified into security employees. Data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 20.0, and validity and reliability analysis were conducted before hypothesis testing. The results of the analysis show that organizational commitment at time t-1 has a positive effect on organizational commitment at time t, and that job satisfaction at time t-1 has a positive effect on job satisfaction at time t Respectively. The results of this study are as follows: 1) The organizational commitment has a significant effect on the job satisfaction. 2) The effect of job satisfaction on organizational commitment was also significant 3) The cross-lagged coefficients show that organizational commitment precedes job satisfaction and serves as a predictor

Estimation of Wage Differentials Caused by the Selection of Preferred Job (입직 과정에서의 희망직장 선택이 임금에 미치는 영향 분석)

  • It is well known that the quality of job match has strong influence on the efficient allocation of labor resources in the economy on the macro level and also on the productivity of individual worker. Regarding this point we assumed that the selection of preferred job at the job entry can be interpreted as a subjective indicator of job match quality and tried to estimate the effects of such selection on the wage level. For this purpose we suggested random effects switching regression model and applied this model to the data of the Korea Labor Institute Panel Study from 1998 to 2000. As the results of estimation, we found that there exists large wage differentials at least more than fifty percent caused by such selection. Considering the fact that such wage differentials can not be suitably explained by the traditional reasons of the wage discrimination, we suggest the possibility that there also exists large productivity gap caused by the job mismatch and the necessity of improving the job placement service activity.

The Panel Analysis of Youth Employment Expectation (청년층의 취업 눈높이 패널 분석)

  • The purpose of this article is to examine the change of employment expectation using the wave 7-11 (2010-2014) of Korea Education and Employment Panel(KEEP). The three main variables are the reservation wage, which has been studied by labor economists for a long time, the convenient working environment factor, the desired job factor. Last two of which are extracted from the 15 survey questions about employment expectation using the factor analysis. Our estimates suggest that male have a higher reservation wage than female while female have a higher level of expectation overall. Women attach more importance to working environment especially. Also, university students have a higher reservation wage and set a higher value on the desired job than employees and job seekers.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate change of productivity of information and technology industry and to induce policy implications. The method of analysis is panel data analysis based on 11 Korean information and technology industry cross-section and 8 years time series. The result of estimate shows that producitivity of labor and capital and information and technology industry is positive, total factor productivity of information and technology industry is also positive. but total factor productivity decreased after 2008. In addition, the productivity of labor was increased, but the productivity of capital input was decreased. It means that the productivity of Korean information and technology industry was not improved despite increasing of labor and capital investment.

An Empirical Analysis on the Employment Effect of Korean Exporting using the DPD model (동태패널모형을 활용한 수출의 고용효과 분석)

  • This paper empirically examines effects of exporting on employment over the period 2000-2007 for Korean listed and non-listed manufacturing firms. The paper employs the dynamic panel model of labor demand and controls for simultaneity of the exports and real wages using a two step random effect Tobit-DPD (Dynamic Panel Data) procedure. Our empirical results suggest that surprisingly, there is no robust evidence for employment effects of exporting of Korea's large firms and small-medium sized firms during the sample period after Korean financial crisis. This implies that Korean exporting patterns have been changed in a way that exporting highly capital intensive goods leads to importing more intermediate goods and thus to countervailing the employment effects of exporting. This suggests that expansion of exporting by lowering exporting prices through the bilateral FTA might not be helpful to enhancing employment in Korea.

A Dynamic Panel Analysis of the Determinants of Adoption of Industrial Robots (동적 패널모형을 이용한 산업용 로봇 도입의 결정요인 분석)

  • In this paper, we analyze the determinants of the adoption of industrial robots using the data from 42 countries, and thereby examine the factors underlying the rapid expansion of industrial robots in Korea. To this end, the industrial robot data for the years 2001-2016 were drawn from the World Robotics dataset of the International Federation of Robotics (IFR). The explanatory variables included labor market environment variables and innovation capacity variables extracted from the dataset of the relevant international organizations. For data analysis, the Arellano-Bond dynamic panel analysis was performed to control for the endogeneity problem of some explanatory variables. The empirical results confirmed the exceptionally rapid expansion of industrial robots in Korea as compared to other countries, even when considering the national income level, employment cost, and innovation capacity. This phenomenon could be attributed to both the demand-side and supply-side factors. For one thing, changes in the labor market environment, such as an increase in employment costs, have led to an increase of the corporate demand for industrial robots. For another, the supply-side factors, such as an increase in the capital intensity and innovation capacity of companies, have also contributed to the widespread adoption of industrial robots.

Union Effects on Nonunion Wages: A Regional Panel Data Analysis for Korea (노동조합이 비조합원 임금에 미치는 영향: 지역 수준 분석)

  • Using data sets from the Korean Labour and Income Panel Study (KLIPS) for the period 2003-2015, this study shows that wages of nonunion workers are positively related to the percentage of unionized workers in the same geographic region. A 10 percentage point increase in a region's union density is associated with a 4.9 percent increase in the region's average wage of nonunion workers. It is also shown that this positive spillover effect is observed for various subgroups of nonunion workers, including women, youth, low-educated workers, small firm employees, and those employed under nonstandard work arrangements. In contrast, the average wage of union workers is found to respond insignificantly to changes in a region's union density.
