  • The purpose of this study was to analyze research trends on subjective well-being in the elderly. To this end, 49 academic papers (general characteristics, research subjects, number of researchers, research variables, and research methods) retrieved through RISS were classified according to criteria. One or two research papers have been steadily published starting with two in 1988, but a slight increase in 2009 and 2010, four each, and five in 2014, respectively. By sample size, 201 to 300 were the most frequent with 14 studies. Quantitative studies were the most common as a research method, but 2 qualitative studies and 2 longitudinal studies were identified through trend analysis. It was confirmed that there are many variables related to physical health such as leisure sports, physical activity, sports for all, dance sports, and mobility discomfort as research topics. The number of studies on the elderly should be increased, and the need for qualitative research to explore the life experiences and meanings of old age is suggested.

Under these circumstances, it is necessary for the middle-aged people to have well-prepared retirement plan in the sense of physical, psychological, social and economical preparedness. The study intends to find out how the occupation and activity characteristics affect the physical, psychological, social and economical preparation for their remaining old age. For the purpose, questionnaires were collected from 344 middle-aged people working in private companies, public offices and small-business owners in metropolitan and Chungcheong province. The findings are as follows: First, they were physically well-prepared, as they thought their leisure activity was more important, their occupational role was more stable and they were old and healthy. Second, Women had notion about their occupation if they kept a good relationship with their colleagues. And they were psychologically prepared well as they valued their leisure activities. Third, if they perceived their occupations as stable and had more social and leisure activities, they were socially well-prepared. Fourth, Although the level of economical preparation depends on their wealth, the occupation and activity characteristics had no effect on the economical preparation. These findings imply that the retirement preparation as a recent social issue has been influenced by the nature of occupation and activity and suggest that the definite policy and program will be required for the retirement preparation of the middle-aged people from various aspects.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine whether family relationships of elderly single-person households affect community participation and whether these relationships differ by gender. Based on Baltes and Baltes (1990) 's selection, optimization, and compensation theory (SOC) and the argument that family members are a social capital by Prandini (2014), we test whether family relationships can affect community participation in old age. In order to verify this, single-person households were extracted from the 2017 National Survey of Living Conditions and Welfare Needs conducted by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs (Male sample=370, Female sample=1770), multiple regression analysis were conducted with the dependent variables of friends·neighbors and the participation at Kyungrodang·welfare centers for the elderly. The results are as follows. In the case of men, family relations showed no significant effect on their participation in friends·neighbors, or Kyungrodang·welfare centers. However, in the case of women, the frequency of contact with family had a positive effect on the frequency of meeting friends·neighbors. Family contact frequency and child relationship satisfaction had a positive (+) effect on Kyungrodang·welfare center participation, while family meeting frequency had a negative effect on participation in Kyungrodang·welfare centers. For women, although Prandini's (2014) claim that family members are a social capital seems to be supported, it was found that the impact could vary depending on the type of community participation. In addition, practical discussions and suggestions were presented.
