  • Sweep geometric models are based on the notion of moving a curve, surface or solid along some path. Sweeping allows definition of prismatic shell surfaces in a simple way, This paper describes an application of sweep geometric models for the optimization of prismatic shells. This geometric model is integrated with finite element formulations. A nine-node degenerated shell element is adopted to calculate the response of prismatic shells. Several examples we presented to demonstrate the process of optimization. From numerical examples, it is observed that sweep geometric models provide an efficient and reliable way of obtaining optimal solutions for a large class of prismatic shell structures.

  • This article investigates the effects of geometric configuration on the vibro-acoustic characteristics of in-plane vibration of a thick annular disc. Disc thickness and outer radius for a given inner radius are selected as independent variables having reasonable ranges. Variations in structural eigensolutions for radial modes are investigated using pre-developed analytical method. Based on these data, far-field sound pressure distributions due to the modal vibrations for a given geometry are also calculated using an analytical solution. Modal sound powers and radiation efficiencies are calculated from the far-field sound pressure distributions and vibratory velocity distributions on the radial surfaces. Based on the results explained above, the geometric configuration that minimizes modal sound radiations in a given frequency range is determined. Finally sound power and radiation efficiency spectra for a unit harmonic force from the selected geometric configuration are obtained from structural and acoustic modal data using the modal expansion technique. Multi-modal sound radiations of the optimized disc that are obtained using proposed analytical methods are confirmed with numerical results. Using the procedure introduced in this article, sound radiation due to in-plane modes within a specific frequency range can be minimized by the disc geometry modifications in a comprehensive and convenient manner.

  • Non-manifold topological operations such as Euler and Boolean operations provide a versatile environment for modeling domains. The implementation of these operations raises geometrical issues that need to be addressed to ensure the topological validity of the underlying model, and they uses the glue operation which provides a basic method to modify the topology of non-manifold models when vertices, edges and faces are contacting each other. Topological information such as adjacency relationships should be inferred when gluing non-manifold models. Two methods of reasoning can be employed to find the topological information : topological reasoning and geometrical reasoning. The topological method can infer the adjacency relationships by using stored topological information. On the other hand, the geometrical method can find topological ambiguities by considering the geometrical shape at the local area of gluing when the topological relations were not stored. This paper describes the geometrical reasoning method.

  • A novel approach for path planning of a polygonal robot is presented. Traditional path planners perform extensive geometric searching to find the optimal path or to prove that there is no solution. The computation required to prove that there is no solution is equivalent to exhaustive search of the motion space, which is typically very expensive. Humans seems to use a set of several different path planning strategies to analyse the situation of the obstacles in the environment, and quickly recognize whether the path-planning problem is easy to solve, hard to solve or has no solution. This human path-planning strategies have motivated the development of the presented algorithm that combines qualitative shape reasoning and exhaustive geometric searching to speed up the path planning process. It has three planning stages consisting of identification of no-solution cases based on an enclosure test, a qualitative reasoning stage, and finally a complete search algorithm in case the previous two stages cannot determine of the existence of a solution path.

  • Tapered roller bearings are used widely in vans, trucks, and trains because they can support the vehicle in a stable manner even under a heavy load. The cage of a tapered roller bearing maintains the gap between the rollers, which prevents friction wear and suppresses heating. If the cage is severely deformed due to resonance, the roller may not be able to roll smoothly and even leave the cage. Consequently, it is very important to analyze the dynamic characteristics of the cage for reliable performance of a bearing. The cage essentially has geometrical tolerance in the manufacturing process. In this paper, the effects of those geometrical imperfections on the dynamic characteristics of the cage were investigated. As a result, natural frequency separation occurred near the natural frequency of the ideal cage due to geometrical imperfections. In addition, the interval was proportional to the magnitude of the geometric error, and the interval increased with increasing mode number.

  • In this study, a method to determine the deformed shape of planar cable under vertical loads was presented. To obtain the deformed shape of cable by general cable theorem, a sag at arbitrary point is usually given. However, in general cases without a given sag, the proposed method determines the deformed shape of cable based on the equations of cable theorem and geometric compatibility by iterative way. The method was also extended to slove extensible cable. It was acknowledged from numerical analysis and model tests in laboratory that the proposed method is valid lot analysis of extensible cable as well as unextensible cable.

  • A geometric non-linear finite element formulation of CRTS reflector subjected to displacement loads, corresponding to the successional assembly steps of the reflector, is presented in order to determine the initial static equilibrium state based on the displacement incremental method. Parametric analyses of the influence of cables and mechanical properties of the reflector on the shape error between reference and equilibrium surfaces have been studied. These results of the present study are compared with the others using Galerkin mothod and NASS 98 program to demonstrate the feasibility.
