  • We examined the causes of the damage of a Joseon Buddhist painting, "Ten Kings of the Hell", for which we had performed conservation treatment while preparing for the special exhibition entitled "A Journey into the Joseon Buddhist Paintings", presented by the National Museum of Korea. For the parts that could not be easily observed by naked eyes, we examined it with microscopes, X-rays and infrared rays. Hereby we introduced the result of the scientific examination performed prior to the conservation treatment, and arranged its process for the "Ten Kings of the Hell".

  • The primary purpose of the study is to investigate museum visitors' intention to use of smart tourism contents by applying the extended technology acceptance model. The study conducted an online survey of a convenience sampling of individuals who visited the National Museum of Korea, and it conducted confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling to test hypotheses of the study. The results showed that information quality of immersive digital gallery in the National Museum of Korea had a significant regression weight on both perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness, and perceived ease of use had a significant regression weight on perceived usefulness. Moreover, both perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness had a significant regression weight on intention to use. The findings indicate that it is necessary to develop smart tourism contents with easily accessible and usable digital applications for promoting smart tourism in the museum.

  • The purpose of the study is to find factors to measure Museum Service Quality (SERVQUAL) and Visitors' motivation. The survey was analyzed with 214 questionnaires out of 230 ones and it was conducted by those who have once visited the National Museum of Korea. Pre-test was conducted from May, 2013. Deriving adequate Service Quality Measures in Museum, factor analysis was applied. From 29th of July 2013 to 23rd of August 2013, surveys were conducted through online and off-line. Using the SPSS 20.0 statistics, Population analysis was applied frequently. In order to ensure the reliability, cronbach ${\alpha}$ value was evaluated. Fit of the research model and the suitability of the path coefficients were evaluated through AMOS to ensure the validity and reliability. As a result, in terms of Analysis on Service Quality, it influenced significantly on the degree of satisfaction. Visitors' motivation also had partial influence on the degree of satisfaction. Moreover, Behavioral Intentions were also influenced by the degree of satisfaction.

  • This study explores the results of the research and conservation treatment conducted on two-peony paintings in the collection of the National Museum of Korea. The Jang-ji(障子) resembles a folding screen, but differs in size, shape, and use. A thick sheet of paper was used to attach the paintings to a wall, and traces of the lattice frame and red pigments, which was mainly used for building structures, remain on the back of the paper. It is confirmed that the paper was used as Jang-ji(障子) attached to adorn the walls or doors of a building and specifically decorated the interior of Seonwonjeon Hall in Gyeongbokgung Palace, which was removed in 1867. The paper also indicates that the mounting was made in the 19th-century Joseon Dynasty, as the peony painting was finished in a different color from Jang-ji(障子) used for the Seonwonjeon Hall in Changdeokgung Palace. Based on the analysis of pigments and literature research, this study attempts to take a new approach to the colored pigments used in royal peony paintings, and it is believed that the conservation treatment used in this study highlights the necessity of continuous research on wallpaper as reference materials for royal paintings of the Joseon Dynasty.

  • A gujangbok is a king's silk ceremonial robe embroidered with nine symbols that represent the essential virtues that a king needs to govern his country. The National Museum of Korea currently own a gujangbok worn by King Gojong in the late Joseon Dynasty. The robe is painted with various colors, including red, yellow, blue, green, and gray. μ-XRF and analysis was conducted on the pigments, and it was found that the red color was made from cinnabar, the yellow color was gold and brass, the blue color was a blue organic pigment and white lead, the green color was a synthetic pigment composed of copper and arsenic, and the gray color pigment was silver. Also, the pigments were compared to those used to make the patterns of a queen's ceremonial robe and a front cloth panel, both made around the same time and also owned by the National Museum of Korea. The comparative analysis revealed clear differences and similarities between the various pigments. The resulting data expect to serve as a useful foundation research for future studying of the pigments used by the Joseon royal court in the late nineteenth century.

  • We conducted preservation treatment for 25 pieces of coins of Goryeo era in collection of the National Museum of Korea. Object coins are 5 kinds of 'Donggukjungbo', 'Dongguktongbo', 'Haedongtongbo', 'Haedongjungbo', 'Samhanjungbo'. As it is worried that if all chlorides able to make bad influence on reclics are removed, letter and chape of coin can be damaged, they were removed partially. To date, inscribed letter form of Dongguktongbo is known as more than 6 types, and as a result of interpreting X-ray photos, 3 types of inscribed letters were identified by this study. Bronze rust acquired in the process of removing rust on coins, origin of materials for coin was assumed through lead isotope ratio analysis. Latest tendency is that diverse scientific analyses are conducted based on bronze rust.
