  • This study was conducted to provide improvement measures for Korea's medicinal crop farmers whose business has been severely damaged by imported medicinal herbs. To accomplish this, the performance and efficiency of farming Angelica dahurica and Bupleurum falcatum were analyzed. The results of the analysis can be summarized as follows. First, the farming households cultivating Angelica dahurica had an average revenue of 1,363,000 KRW per 10 acres. The average income per 10 acres was 500,000 KRW, and the income ratio was 36.7%. Second, the farming households cultivating Bupleurum falcatum had an average revenue of 1,705,000 KRW per 10 acres, with an average income per 10 acres of 873,000 KRW and an income ratio of 44.6%. Third, the farming households cultivating Angelica dahurica were found to have a technical efficiency of 0.790, a pure technical efficiency of 0.856, and a scale efficiency of 0.924. Fourth, the farming households cultivating Bupleurum falcatum were found to have a technical efficiency of 0.670, a pure technical efficiency of 0.794, and a scale efficiency of 0.844. Both Angelica dahurica and Bupleurum falcatum farming households showed relative differences in technical efficiency. The pure technical aspects, rather than the scale aspects, were shown to contribute more to the differences.

  • This study prepared extracts of Angelica dahurica leaves using reflux water extraction (RW), reflux ethanol extraction (RE) and pressure heating water extraction (PW). The extracts were extraction for levels of polyphenol compounds, antioxidant activities, and inhibitory potencies for xanthine oxidase and tyrosinase. The PW extraction method yielded the highest content of polyphenol compounds (95.23 mg/g). The electron donating abilities (EDAs) of RE and PW extracts were 76.02% and 70.08% respectively. The superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activities were 13.45 19.00%, when extracts were assayed at 1 mg/mL. The nitrite scavenging ability (pH 1.2) of the PW extract was 54.33% higher than levels shown (44.24%) by the RE and RW extracts. The inhibition of xanthine oxidase by the RW extract was highest (99.71% at 5 mg/mL) while that of the PW extract was over 97% at 500 g/mL. Tyrosinase inhibition was highest in the RE extract (46.25% at 5 mg/mL). All extracts showed dose-dependent inhibitory activities. The results indicated that the PW extract had the highest polyphenol content, the RW and RE extracts had the best nitrite scavenging ability, and the RE extract showed the most pronounced effect on EDA, SOD-like activity and tyrosinase inhibition.

  • This experiment was conducted to determine the essential oil content and the aromatic constituents in the leaves of Saururus chinensis Baill, Angelica dahurica Fischer and Cnidium officinale Makino. Volatile aromatic compounds in three aromatic medicinal plants were extracted with steam distillation extraction method and identified by GC/MS. Major aromatic compounds in Saururus chinensis Baill were 1,6-octadien-3-ol, 1, 3-benzodioxole, myristicin, ${\alpha}-cadinol$ and patchouene. Major aromatic compounds in Angelica dahurica Fischer were terpinolene, 3-carene, ${\beta}-caryophyllene$, ${\beta}-cubebene$, butylated hydroxy toluene, caryophyllene oxide, piperonal, and in Cnidium officinale Makino were aristolene, benzocycloheptene, ylangene, valencene, ${\beta}-cedrene$, satene, and menthofuran. Essential oil content was highest in Saururus chinensis plant.

  • This study was performed to establish an analytical method for the standardization of Angelicae Dahuricae Radix as a functional ingredient. We established six compounds including oxypeucedanin hydrate (1), byakangelcol (2), oxypeucedanin (3), imperatorin (4), phellopterin (5) and isoimperatorin (6) as marker compounds of Angelicae Dahuricae Radix. An analytical method using Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC) was established and validated for marker compounds of Angelicae Dahuricae Radix. The specificity was confirmed by the chromatogram from UPLC and the value of coefficient determination was also higher than 0.999, indicating high linearity. The relative standard deviation (RSD) and recovery of marker compounds were less than 5% and in the range of 90- 110%, respectively, which means that this method has high accuracy and precision. Therefore, this analytical method could be used as basic data for the development of functional ingredients for health functional food of Angelicae Dahuricae Radix.

  • This study aims to sort out the plants in "Poetry of the South" what is in the written by Qu Yuan in the Kingdom of Chu and to analyze the utility and appreciation of plants. The conclusions are as follows. First, there were 80 plant names and 56 plant species were sorted out, and these results can confirm that the plants were existed in the 340-277 BC. Second, through analyzing the utility of the plants, herba lycopi, basil etc. as the garden plants; lotus, chrysanthemum etc. as the ornamental plants; galangal and cannabis sativa as the present; basil, musa basjoo, etc. as the sacrifice plants. Third, through analyzing the appreciation of the plants, golden birch, chrysanthemum etc. for gustatory appreciation; herba lycopi and pine tree etc. for tactile appreciation; bamboo for sensory appreciation. Forth, through analyzing the token of the plants, calamus and basil etc. are the symbol of personal character noble; wormwood and caltrop etc. are the symbol of villain. Based on the research of "Poetry of the South", it can help to understand the plants culture in 340-277 BC, and it will be a useful information for the plant design.

  • This study analyzed the sugar, amino acid, and mineral content of Angelica dahurica leaves to explore the physiology of the plant and to examine whether the loaves might be useful in food production. A. dahurica leaves contained moisture 76.30%, carbohydrate 7.58%, crude protein 4.01% crude ash 7.87% and 4.23% crude fat (all w/w). The content of reducing sugar in leaf was 1,687.10 mg/100 g. The total amount of free sugar was 57.30 mg/100 g, including 24.75 mg/100 g fructose, 23.95 mg/100g glucose, and 8.60 mg/100 g maltose. Total hydrolyzed amino acids were 139.25 mg/100 g. Total free amino acids were 215.99 mg/100 g, and that of alanine (61.52 mg/100 g) was highest. Total amino acid derivatives were 101.39 mg/100 g, and, of these materials ${\gamma}-aminoisobutyric$ acid was highest at 78.26 mg/100 g. In the When minerals were analyzed, the content of K was the highest (2,135.03 mg/100 g), followed by 916.47 mg/100 g for Ca.
