  • Under the assumptions that teachers' beliefs toward mathematics education play a role of a filter between teachers' knowledge and teaching practices, this study surveyed and analyzed elementary teachers' beliefs toward mathematics education: helping students to understand mathematics concepts, addressing students' mathematical misconceptions, engaging students in mathematics classroom, and improving students' mathematical thinking. From the analysis of survey results of the study, I found that there were dominant components in elementary teachers' beliefs system regarding teaching mathematics. In addition, there are some constructs affected by teachers' characteristics such as gender and educational backgrounds. In this study, I presented a representative model of elementary teachers' beliefs system toward mathematics education.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of infant CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) immediate remediation[LAB2]. Methods: This is a quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent comparison group pre-post test design. Participants were 73 child care teachers in J district in Seoul. The experimental group (35) received immediate remediation with video learning [LAB3]for infant CPR education and the control group (38) received video learning only. We investigated confidence of infant CPR and tested single-rescuer infant CPR performance depending on a checklist (8 items). Data were collected before and right after to evaluate the confidence of infant CPR and before, right after and 2 weeks after the education to evaluate the skill performance and final acceptance. Results: There was a significant increase in confidence of infant CPR in the experimental group and control group. There was a statistically significant difference in the degree of skill performance between groups according to the amount time (F=10.58, p<.001). The degree of skill performance was tested two weeks after the education and immediate remediation was 5.35 times more effective compared to the video image demonstration (B=1.677, p<.001). Conclusion: The findings provide the necessity of immediate remediation education of infant CPR to increase confidence and skill performance ability.

  • Global economy is moving to digital economy accelerated by the rapid development of ICT (information and communication technology). However, the progress in e-business in developing countries has been slow due to the lack of experience, technology, and basic infra structure. One way to solve this problem is to provide them with customized e-business solution, training, and contents service. In this paper, we design an E-business Training Supporting System (E-TSS) for developing countries. It consists of a simple business blog to support business web page and a customized e-business solution. The E-TSS is customized for individual country. This customization becomes more effective utilizing an intelligent agent based upon recognizing unique characteristics such as language and time. The E-TSS is implemented and utilized by APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Women's e-Biz Center.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and retention period of immediate remediation for infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in child care teachers. Methods: This study used a nonequivalent comparison pre- and post-test design to measure knowledge about and confidence in infant CPR and an interrupted time-series design to determine skill performance. The experimental group (n=25) received both immediate remediation and video learning for infant CPR, and the comparison group (n=28) received video learning only. Knowledge and confidence were measured before and after 4 weeks. Their skill performance was tested immediately, and 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and 24 weeks after intervention. Data analysis consisted of ${\chi}^2$ tests, t-tests, paired t-tests, and a generalized linear mixed model. Results: There were significant increases in knowledge and confidence within the experimental group. Skill performance showed a significant difference according to the group factor (F=10.81, p=.002) and measurement time (F=146.80, p<.001). The experimental group maintained significantly higher skill performance than did the comparison group. Conclusion: These findings support the necessity of immediate remediation education for infant CPR to maintain skill performance. In addition, appropriate renewal time and the improvement of training programs for child care teachers are necessary.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze trends in conceptual change research in the field of Earth Science education conducted in Korea and to provide them as basic data of future concept change research. The trends of conceptual change research were analyzed in terms of keywords, year of publication, source of research, purpose of research, subject, area of research, and research method. This study was carried out on a total of 126 conceptual change papers of Earth Science education published from 1989 to July 2017. This study showed the following conclusions: First, the conceptual change research papers used more the term 'conceptual change' than 'misconceptions' and 'preconceptions'. Second, the conceptual change paper has achieved a large amount of growth in the 2000s. Third, conceptual change research tended to proceed to the subject of master's dissertation. Fourth, there were a lot of researches to find out the misconceptions and change them into the right concept, the conceptual change paper used free response test for misconceptions, and cognitive conflict instruction model and CAI (Computer Assisted Instruction) teaching strategy for misconceptions. Fifth, elementary school students were studied the most. Sixth, the study of conceptual changes in the field of Earth Science was high in the astronomical and atmospheric areas. Finally, although quantitative analysis methods were used in the early days of research, in the 2010s, qualitative analysis methods were widely used. In this paper, we proposed research on conceptual change for pre- and in-service teachers, expansion of research on conceptual changes in various fields such as geology, oceanography, atmosphere in Earth Science, investigation of causes of misconception in Earth Science and research on individual's affective factors, and so on.

  • The present study examines various pedagogical functions of conversational repair strategies employed by the teacher in the ESL classroom. As part of interactional resources, conversational repair is defined as the treatment of trouble occurring in interactive language use and is originally designed to deal with communication problems. Research on conversational repair has focused on ordinary conversation and organization of repair practices. Studies on more pedagogical functions of repair sequences initiated by the teacher are very few. The data were from five hours of ESL structure classes in an intensive English institute at a large U.S. university. They were closely transcribed and microanalyzed following the conversation-analytic methodology. The analysis found that ESL teachers' repair techniques not only resolve communication problems but they are also designed to serve several important instructional purposes of teaching the target language. They include creating opportunities of comprehensible input, inducing modified comprehensible output from students, guiding and controlling student output, and initiating corrections by initiating repair.

  • Over the past few decades, dramatic socioeconomic developments have resulted in the change of epidemiological transition from infectious to chronic diseases as leading causes of death in Korea. Behavioral factors, particularly smoking, diet and activity patterns, alcohol consumptions are among the most prominent contributors to mortality. Since after landmark reports on health promotion in Canada and USA during the 1970s and 1980s, which heralded the commitment of governments to health promotion, many studies have been made on it.

  • The purpose of this study was to suggest that the history of science be introduced to students in the secondary school to help understand the developmental process of the scientific concepts, especially the concept 'heat'. Reviewing the national and international researches related to students' concept 'heat' revealed that many students tend to grasp the wrong concept of heat based on the caloric theory. Studies on definitions and explanations of the concept 'heat' and related concepts in secondary school science textbooks indicated that the way 'heat' was described could not help students to correct their misconceptions. In conclusion we need to include the historical and developmental process of scientific concepts such as heat in textbooks.
