  • This study aims to reinvestigate the reason for introducing radian as a new unit to express the size of angles, what is the meaning of radian measures to use arc lengths as angle measures, and why is the domain of trigonometric functions expanded to real numbers for expressing general angles. For this purpose, it was conducted historical, mathematical and applied mathematical analyzes in order to research at multidisciplinary analysis of the radian concept. As a result, the following were revealed. First, radian measure is intrinsic essence in angle measure. The radian is itself, and theoretical absolute unit. The radian makes trigonometric functions as real functions. Second, radians should be aware of invariance through covariance of ratios and proportions in concentric circles. The orthogonality between cosine and sine gives a crucial inevitability to the radian. It should be aware that radian is the simplest standards for measuring the length of arcs by the length of radius. It can find the connection with sexadecimal method using the division strategy. Third, I revealed the necessity by distinction between angle and angle measure. It needs justification for omission of radians and multiplication relationship strategy between arc and radius. The didactical suggestions derived by these can reveal the usefulness and value of the radian concept and can contribute to the substantive teaching of radian measure.

  • This study aimed to derive pedagogical implications by comparing and analyzing how the concept of pi is taught in 10 different elementary mathematics textbooks, which are scheduled to be applied from 2023. We developed a textbook analysis framework by previous studies on the concept of pi and the teaching of pi, and analyzed in terms of three instructional elements (i.e. inferring conceptsof pi, understanding properties of pi, and applying relationships). We derived the need to emphasize various contexts for estimation of pi, presentation of problem situations that provide motivation to actually measure diameters and circumferences, providing an opportunity to explore the properties of measurement, and an experience the flexibility of selecting an approximate value of pi. Based on the above conclusions and pedagogical implications through the research results., we suggested ways to teach the concept of pi in elementary mathematics and improvement points for developing textbooks focusing on the context of introduction of pi and the use of technological tools.

  • Concept and model of multiplication is not single. Concepts of multiplication can be classified into three cases: repeated addition, times idea, pairs set. Models of multiplication can be classified into four cases: measurement, rectangular pattern, combinatorial problem, number line. Among diverse cases of multiplication's concept and model, which case does elementary mathematics education lay stress on? This question is a controvertible didactical point. In this thesis, (1) mathematical and didactical analysis of multiplication's concept and model is performed, (2) a concrete program of teaching multiplication which is based on times idea is contrived, (3) With this new program, the teaching experiment is performed and its result is analyzed. Through this study, I obtained the following results and suggestions. First, the degree of testee's understanding of times idea is not high. Secondly, a sort of test problem which asks the testee to find times value is more easy than the one to find multiplicative resulting value. Thirdly, combinatorial problem can be handled as an application of multiplication. Fourthly, the degree of testee's understanding of repeated addition is high. In conclusion, I observe the fact that this new program which is based on times idea could be a alternative program of teaching multiplication which could complement the traditional method.

  • A mathematics pre-service teacher T analyzed American mathematics textbooks and developed his teaching material for instruction. This study analyzed his thinking processes and results in the view of semiotics. If we regard the textbook as a sign and the unitary conversion that students should learn as an object of the sign, the interpretant of the sign is the pre-service teacher's analysis, which is conducted at the aspects of a subject matter knowledge and student understanding. T interpreted the textbook versatilely in terms of his knowledges and experiences. He developed his teaching materials as diagrams, did the diagrammatic thinking and became to have the hypostatic abstraction. This study is significant because it used semiotics for explaining T's thinking process.

  • This study is based on Freudenthal's mathmatising process and the didactical phenomenology of linear function concept, I have described and examined the process in which students represent the constant rate of change into tables, graphs and equations and, in this way, how they construct mental objects and essence of the linear function concept. The students used the proportionality as composite units, when they represented the phenomenon with constant rate of change into tables. When representing in graphs, all but one student represented it into a line. There were differences among the students in the level they were using the given conditions, co-variation perspective, and corresponding rules when formulating equations. The students compared the relationship between two variables in a multiplicative way, and under the guidance of teachers they reached to the understanding that its relationship becomes a constant. Moreover, they could construct mental objects of a constant rate of change, understanding the situation where the relationship between time difference and distance difference becomes one value, namely speed. The students had difficulties in connecting the rate of change with the inclination of a line. The students constructed the essence (concept) of linear functions, after building and organizing the image that the rate of change is constant, the graph is linear, and the equation is formulated as y=ax+b (a: inclination, b: intercept).

  • This study aims to analyze and compare Korean mathematics textbooks on time and to induce its educational implications. Concretely, the mathematics textbooks from the 1st to the 2009 national revised curriculum were selected for the longitudinal analysis. In each textbook, the contents such as clock reading, units of time, and calculation of elapsed time among various contents about time were chosen. The learning elements and their teaching sequence, the teaching method (the introducing ways of each concept and principle), and the didactical representations are set as an analysis framework. The results of analysis revealed many characteristics and differences in ways of dealing contents about time. Based on these results, we suggested several implications for writing the unit of time in elementary mathematics textbooks and teaching about time in classrooms.

  • In this thesis, we designed a experimental learning-teaching plan of 'decimal fraction concept' at the 4-th grade level. We rest our plan on two basic premises. One is the fact that a essential concept of decimal fraction is 'polynomial of which indeterminate is 10', and another is the fact that the origin of decimal fraction is successive measurement activities which improving accuracy through decimal partition of measuring unit. The main features of our experimental learning-teaching plan is as follows. Firstly, students can experience a operation which generate decimal unit system through decimal partitioning of measuring unit. Secondly, the decimal fraction expansion will be initially introduced and the complete representation of decimal fraction according to positional notation will follow. Thirdly, such various interpretations of decimal fraction as 3.751m, 3m+7dm+5cm+1mm, $(3+\frac{7}{10}+\frac{5}{100}+\frac{1}{1000})m$ and $\frac{3751}{1000}m$ will be handled. Fourthly, decimal fraction will not be introduced with 'unit decimal fraction' such as 0.1, 0.01, 0.001, ${\cdots}$ but with 'natural number+decimal fraction' such as 2.345. Fifthly, we arranged a numeration activity ruled by random unit system previous to formal representation ruled by decimal positional notation. A experimental learning-teaching plan which presented in this thesis must be examined through teaching experiment. It is necessary to successive research for this task.

  • Rainfall-runoff characteristics are analysed based on the geomorphological instantaneous unit hydrograph(GIUH) derived by geomorphological parameters using geographical information system in watershed ungaged or deficient of field data. Observed data of Seom river experiment watershed at upstream of Hoengseong dam and variable slope method for hydrograph separating of direct non are used. The 4th stream order of Seom river experimental watershed is developed with a regular correlation referred to the Horton-Strahler's law of stream order. The characteristic velocity to determine shape parameter of GIUH is 1.0m/s and its equation is modified for accurate results. Hydrograph at the outlet of 4th stream order of Maeil gage station and at the outlets of 3rd stream order of Sogun and Nonggeori gage stations show a little differences in falling limb of hydrograph but agree well to the observed data in general. The results by hydrological routing with HEC-HMS to the outlet of 4th stream order of Maeil gage station which the hydrograph by GIUH obtained at Sogun and Nonggeori gage stations of 3rd stream oder are applied as upstream inputs give better agreement with observed data than those by hydrograph by GIUH obtained at Maeil gage station of 4th stream order. In general, the rainfall-runoff by GIUH has applicability to the watershed routing of ungaged project regions.

  • The epistemological obstacles in the area learning of plane figure can be categorized into two types that is closely related to an attribute of measurement and is strongly connected with unit square. First, reasons for the obstacle related to an attribute of measurement are that 'area' is in conflict. with 'length' and the definition of 'plane figure' is not accordance with that of 'measurement'. Second, the causes of epistemological obstacles related to unit square are that unit square is not a basic unit to students and students have little understanding of the conception of the two dimensions. Thus, To overcome the obstacle related to an attribute of measurement, students must be able to distinguish between 'area' and 'length' through a variety of measurement activities. And, the definition of area needs to be redefined with the conception of measurement. Also, the textbook should make it possible to help students to induce the formula with the conception of 'array' and facilitate the application of formula in an integrated way. Meanwhile, To overcome obstacles related to unit square, authentic subject matter of real life and the various shapes of area need to be introduced in order for students to practice sufficient activities of each measure stage. Furthermore, teachers should seek for the pedagogical ways such as concrete manipulable activities to help them to grasp the continuous feature of the conception of area. Finally, it must be study on epistemological obstacles for good understanding. As present the cause and the teaching implication of epistemological obstacles through the research of epistemological obstacles, it must be solved.
