  • A tunable wavelength filter was proposed and demonstrated by using the UV nanoimprint technique. It consists of a Bragg grating in polymer waveguides and a heating electrode. The manufacturing of the grating was substantially simplified with the introduction of a smart imprint stamp containing a waveguide pattern integrated with the grating pattern. The center wavelength of the filter was successfully tuned by taking advantage of the thermooptic effect in polymers, which was induced by supplying electrical power to the electrode. For the fabricated device, a transmission dip of ${\~}$15 dB and a 3-dB bandwidth of 0.8 nm were obtained at the Bragg wavelength of ${\~}$l560 nm. The achieved thermooptic tuning efficiency was ${\~}$0.28 nm/mW, while the center wavelength was shifted from 1560 nm to 1558 nm with the electrical power consumption of 7 mW.

Additionally, heating system and temperature sensor system were used in order to observe property of the filter by thermo-optic effect. The tuning efficiency of the filter was measured to be 0.144nm/K$^{-1}$ showing the tuning range of 9.4nm for the temperature variation of 64.7$^{\circ}C$. Filter, lens and fiber were aligned by micro-optical bench.

  • WDM thin film filters for fiber optical communication were designed using Fabry-Prot type multiple cavity filters and an equivalent thin film technique. As the number of cavities in multiple cavity filters increases, it becomes difficult to design the filters due to a great number of variables (the number of cavities, period of reflectors, order of spacers). To solve the problem of design, we treated the fewest variables, regarding symmetrical thin films as equivalent layers, and we applied structural and numerical formulas based on an analysis method of multiple cavity filters. The equivalent thin film technique was able to provide systematic and quantitative design of the WDM thin film filters.

  • Optical Band-pass Filter(BPF) for the selected wavelength of 4300 nm was designed and fabricated on Si wager by alternately depositing Ge and $SiO_2$ thin layers by an electron beam evaporation technique. The fabricated BPF showed the optical transmittance characteristics of 58.2% with FWHM(Full Width at Half Maximum) of 204 nm at 4300 nm, but showed the transmittance less than 5% due to the reflectance over all the wavelength ranges except 4300 nm band. The $CO_2$ sensitivity of BPF was investigated with the transmittance as a function of $CO_2$ gas concentration using a sensing cell attached to FT-IR instrument. The transmittance of BPF was almost linearly decreased with increasing of $CO_2$ concentration in the range of from 500 to 5000 ppm. The sensing structure using double BPFs showed higher slop of transmittance vs $CO_2$ concentration, and thus higher gas sensitivity than that using a single BPF, even though the former had relatively lower transmittance.

  • We report a switchable RGB color filters for Lab on a chip. Ink color filter devices are fabricated by PDMS patterning process. The optical transmission in the ultra-violet and visible wavelengths of color filters have been investigated. The ink color filters are characterised by the slope and shape of the spectrum. The transmission of red/yellow filter consists of curves with a sharp cut-off spectrum at 600 and 500 nm. The blue output of the ink filter has 80% peak transmission and weak red-leak, while the green ink filter has 48% peak transmission and red-leak.

  • An integrated photonic microwave bandpass filter has been proposed and demonstrated incorporating a coherently coupled microring resonator in low-loss polymers. The proposed device may feature compact site, simple structure, tuning via the thermooptic and electrooptic effect, and flexible integration with other electrical and optical devices. The resonator was designed to have an extremely small bandwidth so that it could be used to selectively pass the optical signal carrying the microwave signal to attain efficient bandpass filtering. We made and tested two resonators with a single ring and double rings, and performed a theoretical fitting of their measured transfer curves to predict the performance of the microwave filters based on them precisely. It was found that as the number of the rings used for the resonator increases, the bandwidth gets smaller, the rolloff sharper, and the band rejection higher. Finally our filter exhibited the center frequency of 10GHz, the 3-dB bandwidth of 1.0GHz, the corresponding quality (Q) factor of 10, and the rejection outside of the passband of more than 25dB.

  • The Fabry-Perot interferometer filters for UV meter were designed using the design program of optical thin films. From the data obtained, two filters were fabricated. The transmittance of two filter were measured by spectrophotometer in order to analysis their optical property. The transmittance was controlled by the thickness of Ag reflector and the wavelength of the transmission was controlled by the thickness of $SiO_2$ spacer. The two UV filters were fabricated by the RF magnetron sputtering which are the multilayers of [air/$SiO_2$(174.6 nm)|Ag(78 nm)|$SiO_2$(68 nm)|Ag(78 nm)|Cr(5 nm)|glass] and [air/$SiO_2$(174.6 nm)|Ag(S8 nm)|$SiO_2$(56 nm)|Ag(58 nm)|Cr(S nm)|glass]. One filter has the maximum transmittance of 6% at the about 370nm and it has the transmittance of below 0.2% at 400nm. The other filter can be found that the transmittance is increased as the thickness of Ag is decreased and the wavelength of the transmission is controlled by the thickness of $SiO_2$ spacer layer.

  • An analytic solution for the spectral response of linearly-chirped grating filter is derived, which takes the finite physical length of filter into account. In the usual case of broad-band linearly-chirped grating filter the analytic solution is expressed in terms of elementary functions, by approximating asymptotically the involved parabolic cylinder functions over different ranges of its argument. It is also shown that derived results are general enough to include previously-available approximations as particular cases, and that they agree well with the numerical solutions based upon the Runge-Kutta method.

  • Optical filters utilizing the evanescent filed coupling between the side polished fiber and polymer planar waveguide were fabricated and optical properties of the devices were measured. A scheme for reducing polarization dependent properties of the device was proposed and demonstrated experimentally. Our measurement results showed that resonance wavelengths and filtering depth of the optical filters can be determined by adjusting thickness of planar waveguide and polishing depth of the fiber. The device fabrication procedure including fiber polishing steps and formation of polymer planar waveguide were described. The optical characteristics of fabricated optical filers were that 3 dB bandwidth was 15 nm, the resonance wavelength difference between the TE and TM polarized response was less then 2 nm, and insertion loss was less then 0.2 dB. The measured resonance wavelength drift dut to the variation of ambient temperature was -0.35 nm/$^{\circ}C$.

  • We proposed an analysis model for a Fabry-Perot cavity constructed with a plane-mirrored optical fiber and a concave-mirrored one. We presented the analysis results calculated by inserting practical values into the equations derived. The coupling loss of the cavity and the mirror loss are the most important parameters in reducing the insertion loss of the filter. In order to build a filter of finesse 600, FSR 57 nm, and insertion loss < 3 dB, the plane-concave cavity using mirrors of loss < 0.09% should be aligned for the coupling loss to be less than 0.1 %.
