The purpose of this study is to investigate views of high school students' learning of chemistry as one aspect of conceptual ecology. The results of this study will help us expand our understanding of conceptual change as it is used to evaluate learners. I made use of an interpretative research design based on principles of naturalistic inquiry. The participants in this study were six sophomore students. The picture of a chemistry class we draw from analyzing data is a play on stage with little interaction. Students accept passive and difficult-to-modify views of the learner roles that they should play in the chemistry classroom. Students identified chemistry classes as conservative places. 'Transmission' seems to remain the persistent and dominant classroom cultural dynamic for both the teaching and learning of chemistry. Students should understand about learning processes, and how to play, monitor, evaluate and regulate them. Students should experience the plausibility and fruitfulness of learning chemistry, and it will help students to feel a "love of learning chemistry." As students change their views of learning chemistry, it will help to improve their learning and to experience conceptual change in chemistry learning.

We investigated student's characteristics in each educational achievement level using the results of the NAEA (National Assessment of Educational Achievement) in 2009, 2010, and 2011 for Grade 6 students, and compared the characteristics between elementary and middle school students. The analysis of representative items for each educational achievement level of elementary and middle school students revealed that (a) advanced level students from both elementary and middle school could exactly understand the achievement criteria of the curriculum, (b) proficient level students from both elementary and middle school were understanding the achievement criteria of the curriculum superficially, for example, they could not understand concepts exactly but could memorize terms, and so should have compensational education under situations that ask for short answer or essay type items instead of multiple choice items, and (c) basic level students from both elementary and middle school almost could not understand the achievement criteria of curriculum, and so should have compensational education under situations that only deal with a simple situation. Science concepts treated in science curriculum are hierarchically organized by level of school, and simple compensational education for the students of below basic level will not solve learning deficits in science education. Differentiated education by educational achievement should be largely expanded instead.

This study aims to research high school students' misconception of botanic photosynthesis and respiration, and as the measure of rectifying the misconception, to develop the teaching program based on Driver's conceptual change model, applying it to classes and observing the effect. Selected as the research subject was sixty-six students in 1st year of a highschool located in Busan who had chosen Biology Learning as discretionary subject, with their conceptual level on botanic photosynthesis and respiration researched through tests in drawing and descriptive writing. As a consequence of applying drawing as a way of classifying the levels of students' misconception on photosynthesis and respiration, many students' drawings included their misconception caused by textbooks or scientists, but after application of Driver's conceptual change model, they drew scientific drawings including the fundamental factors of botanic photosynthesis and respiration such as light, carbon dioxide, water, glucose, oxygen, leaf, chloroplast, mitochondria, stoma, and energy. Likewise, as a result of the descriptive writing test implemented for researching the students' conception on the various aspects of botanic photosynthesis and respiration, many students in the pretest showed misconception on the point of time and location at which botanic photosynthesis and respiration occur, botanic nutrient, the role of a leaf in photosynthesis, and the relation between botanic photosynthesis and respiration, but after teaching based on Driver's conceptual change model, their misconceptions on photosynthesis and respiration were rectified to a high degree.
Many elementary school teachers' lack of scientific knowledge reveal as several problems in teaching science. Thus, elementary school teachers need to improve their scientific knowledge, but there is the limit to improve the teachers' scientific knowledge through activities based on lecture that conducted in process of training and retraining them. Therefore, Improvement for training science teacher to improve scientific knowledge of elementary school teachers would be searched in this study. Depth interview was conducted toward three elementary school teachers, who had conducted action research, to improve content knowledge of material domain within teaching process and elementary school science. Based on result of the interview, difficulty and development that the three teachers were commonly experienced in process of conducting scientific inquiry in action research were analyzed. One of the difficulties of the inquiry were to figure out how the three teachers, who participated in the interview, understand specific concept, what they do not understand, and what they should study more to understand the concept. And there was a circumstance that the teachers did not know how to apply procedural knowledge, which learned explicitly in the process of setting plan for conducting research, into real context. Since there was difference between knowledge that they understand disjunctively and context that observed in real circumstance, they faced difficulty. However, the teachers conducted analysis of topic, planning research, conducting research, discussion of the result by themselves with those difficulties Thus, the teachers mentioned that not only content knowledge had been improved, but understanding of procedural knowledge, which is not intended to improve, had been also improved. Besides, they also mentioned that comprehensive understanding content knowledge, which they already understood, was also helpful. And the teachers suggest that if there were chance to discuss and examine the scientific practices by consisting of group with colleagues rather than conducting it individually it would more efficient studying. Considering their suggestion, direction of training elementary school teachers for improving their scientific knowledge should be improved in a way to understand science concepts based on direct research about context that is generated in circumstance of studying group of the teachers. Consequently, it would contribute to improvement of teaching science by combining teachers' practice and understanding.
The purpose of this study was to identify the concepts of elementary school teachers related to three states of matter from activities of classifying various materials in life. The subjects were 25 teachers majored in primary science education at a graduate college of education and 10 teachers of elementary school located in a metropolitan city. A questionnaire and observation related to classification activities, and interviews were carried out and analyzed them qualitatively and quantitatively. From the analysis, we found that most elementary school teachers understood the classification criteria of three states of matter through macroscopic viewpoints and experienced difficulties in determining the state of mixture materials. After discussion of the classification results, the teachers’ concept was changed. But, when performing classification activity on the basis of the newly created concepts, it has not reached its results agreed. The result of this study shows that process of concept of science has been agreed in the same way to all people is not easy. Therefore, the teacher education programs to make possible to improve the ability capable of classifying the states of the various matters and to understand the nature of classification is required. In addition, deep discussion on the classification of the mixture is also necessary.

Recently, there have been studies about Typically- Perceived-Situations (TPSs) and about critical examples as a way to understand students' preconceptions with context. TPS is a situation arising immediately in one's mind when he or she thinks about the concept, while a critical example is an example that becomes the most helpful in learning the concept. We might explore how the context is involved in the process of students' conceptual understanding by examining TPSs and critical examples together. This study analyzed, through questionnaires and interviews, the characteristics of TPSs and those of critical examples that secondary students hold about 'force' and 'mechanical energy conversion.' Students' TPSs and critical examples showed different characteristics according to the concept. In a case of force that is related to everyday life, there were various situations as TPSs and critical examples. Unlike force, there were a few situations as TPSs and critical examples such as a falling ball in the case of mechanical energy conversion. Students tended to regard situations that are usually experienced and understood easily as TPSs or critical examples. On the basis of the results of this study, it is concluded that it would be a good strategy to teach science concepts for teachers to start with the TPS of a concept, to introduce the concept, and then to expose the attributes of the concept with critical examples.

In this study, we examine whether the description of the elementary science curriculum guide, the concept of evolution, and the beliefs of teachers affect the teaching practice in classes related to adaptation of elementary school teachers. First, we examined the alternative concept among the sentences described in the bio-adaptation-related unit of the 2009 Elementary Science Curriculum Teacher's Guide and identified the effects of this description on the teaching practice of elementary school teachers. Next, six elementary school teachers were classified according to the results of the evolutionary concept test paper and the evolutionary belief test paper, and based on the class recording data and interview data, whether there is a difference in teaching execution. As a result, it was confirmed that there were a total of 18 descriptions corresponding to the concept of evolutionary alternatives in the analysis of instruction descriptions, and that these descriptions influenced elementary school teachers' adaptation concepts and teaching practice. Next, the group with high and low levels of evolution differ in the areas of "recognition of importance in the unit, distinction between adaptation concepts in the general sense and adaptation concepts in the biological sense, errors in the class," and "recognition of evolutionary education needs in the elementary curriculum." This study is meaningful in that it qualitatively confirms the research on the evolution concept of elementary school teachers, which has been approached quantitatively, and in-depth, confirms how the description, evolution concepts, and evolutionary beliefs affect elementary school teachers' biological adaptation concepts.
In this study, science teachers' and students' perceptions were searched on lectures and experiment of law of definite proportion in middle school science classes. For this study, the three teachers' lessons were observed and recorded, following interviews related to teachers' perceptions on the lessons and experiments. Also, We analyzed students' science scores, cognitive levels, science attitude, experimental reports, etc. According to the results, the three teachers had different focuses in the lectures. Chemistry teachers accentuated calculation of proportions and application rather than basic conceptions. But the students could not understand basic conceptions properly. The teachers spend long time to explain experimental procedures by assuming a low performance level of students in experimental classes. And the teachers had negative perceptions about error of results. The students could not understand the experiment results well, tried to manipulate data artificially, and had negative perceptions about error of results like the teachers. We suggested that these problems might be solved by changing teachers' perceptions on school science lectures and experiments.
