  • The joint treatment of concrete is one of the technical problems in top down construction method. Joints created with the top down construction result in serious weakness from the aspects of both structural and water-barrier function. Ultrasonic method was used for the inspection of top down construction joints of a various column in SRC structure in this study. The advantages and limitations of this method for non-destructive inspection in top down construction joints are investigated. As a result, it has been verified that the semi-direct measurement method is more effective than the other methods for detecting the voids of construction joints using ultrasonic method.

  • Todorokite, a tunnel-structured manganese oxide, can contain cations within the relatively large nanopores created by the $3{\times}3$ Mn octahedra. Because todorokite is poorly crystalline and found as aggregates mixed with other phases of Mn oxides in nature, the coordination structure of cations in the nanopores is challenging to fully characterize in experiment. In the current article, we report the atomistic coordination structures of $Mg^{2+}$ ions in todorokite tunnel nanopores using the classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. In experiment, $Mg^{2+}$ is known to occupy the center of the nanopores. In our MD simulations, 60 % of $Mg^{2+}$ ions were located at the center of the nanopores; 40 % of the ions were found at the corners. All $Mg^{2+}$ located at the center formed the six-fold coordination with water molecules, just as the ion in bulk aqueous solution. $Mg^{2+}$ ions at the corners also formed the six-fold coordination with not only water molecules but also Mn octahedral surface oxygens. The mean squared displacements were calculated to examine the dynamic features of $Mg^{2+}$ ions in the one-dimensional (1D) nanopores. Our MD simulations indicate that the dynamic features of water molecules and the cations observed in bulk aqueous solution are lost in the 1D nanopores of todorokite.

  • Anisotropy observed in sedimentary rock such as sandstone is mainly caused by existence of bedding consequently influencing on its hydraulic characteristics. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of locally changing pore structure due to bedding on the hydraulic anisotropy of sandstone, in terms of localized porosity. X-ray CT scan is applied to observe the internal pore structures which is hard to be seen by other experimental methods. Permeability test is also conducted for samples cored at every $15^{\circ}$ from $0^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$ with respect to bedding plane. As a result, the permeability anisotropy is manifest having 1.8 of anisotropy ratio ($k_{90^{\circ}}/k_{0^{\circ}}$) and corresponds with the anisotropy of porosity due to bedding.

  • The hydro-mechanical behavior of the Earth's crust is strongly dependent on the fractional volume and geometrical structure of effective pore spaces. This study aims to understand the characteristics of pores using electrical impedance. We measured the electric impedance of core samples (diameter, 38-50 mm; length, 70-100 mm) of three types of granite (Hwangdeung, Pocheon, and Yangsan) and two types of sandstone (Boryung and Berea) with different porosities and pore structures, after saturation with saline water of varying salinities. The results show that resistance decreases but capacitance increases with increasing salinity of the pore fluid. For a given salinity, the resistivity and formation factor are reduced with increasing porosity of the rocks, and the capacitance increases. Berea sandstone shows anisotropy in resistance, tortuosity, and cementation factor, with these factors being highest normal to bedding planes. This result indicates that the connectivity of pores is weakest normal to bedding. In conclusion, the electrical characteristics of the tested samples are related not only to their porosity but also to the pore geometry.

  • Studies of pore structure in shale gas reservoirs are essential to increase recovery rates, which is in the spotlight concerning unconventional resources. In this study, the distribution of pores in shale gas reservoir sample were observed using Scanning Electron Microscope Particle Analysis (SELPA), which is appropriate to analyze the distribution of particle or shape for sample in large area. A sample from the A-068 borehole drilled in the Liard Basin was analyzed; calcite is the main mineral. The pore size ranges from tens of nanometers to hundreds of micrometers and the contribution of each pore size to overall sample porosity was determined using SELPA. The distribution of pores was determined by observing the surface in the same area at magnifications of ×1000, ×3000 and ×5000. Pores less than 100 nm were observed at high magnifications and confirm that small-scale pore distribution can be analyzed and identified rapidly using SELPA. The method introduced in this study will be useful to understand pore structures in unconventional reservoirs.

  • Since the variations of electromagnetic suspension forces of maglev trains have close relations with the acceleration of the levitated bodies, it is basic to control the levitation forces using the measured acceleration of vehicles. In this study, an airgap control algorithm based on acceleration feedback is applied to maglev trains and a dynamic analysis method is developed considering maglev train-guideway interaction. Using the developed method, dynamic behaviors of a maglev train-guideway interaction system are investigated. It is observed from the analysis that the current design guidelines can be satisfied when the proposed airgap control algorithm is employed. Using the contorl algorithm, the current guidelines can be improved and economical maglev railway guideway structures can be designed.

  • Physical and microstructural properties of Pungchon and Maggol limestone were investigated quantitatively during 50 cycles of artificial freezing and thawing test. There were decrease in dry weight and P,S-wave velocity, and increase in absorption rate in both rock types. Porosity, pore volume, equivalent diameter, throat thickness and pore orientation were analyzed using X-ray computed tomography images. Porosity increased, and initiation and expansion of pores were investigated as weathering progresses. Physical and microstructural variation in Maggol limestone was larger than that of Pungchon limestone because Maggol limestone has more pores and microcracks at initial state. As this study analyzes physical and microstructural properties of rock specimens comprehensively, it can be applied to further rock weathering study and can be used as fundamental data of construction and resource development in cold regions.

  • Linear traverse method and point count method described at ASTM have been widely used to estimate the air void system in hardened concrete. These methods, however, are rarely used at present, because they require many efforts and time consuming works. Also these results depend on each person's decision, and are not repeatable. Thus, new image analysis method using microscope and computer processes has been approached for analyzing air void system in hardened concrete. The purpose of this study was to analysis the air void systems in latex-modified concretes using a reasonable and objective image analysis method with main experimental variables such as cement types(ordinary portland cement, rapid setting cement) and latex contents(0%,15%). In the results of this study, the use of polymer latex showed that it could be attributed to its air void systems, due to the fact that the latex emulsion acts as an air-entraining agent, which thus generally guarantees an adequate air-void system.

  • The present work extends the recent variational formulation to more general time-dependent problems. Thus, based upon recent works of variational formulation in dynamics and pure heat diffusion in the context of the extended framework of Hamilton's principle, formulation for fully coupled thermoelasticity is developed first, then, with thermoelasticity-poroelasticity analogy, poroelasticity formulation is provided. For each case, energy conservation and energy dissipation properties are discussed in Fourier transform domain.
