An Analysis of Learning Styles for Implementing Learning Strategies of First-year Engineering Students (공과대학 신입생의 학습전략 활용을 위한 학습양식 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify learning strategies by learning style of first-year engineering students in order to find implications for teaching and learning strategies in engineering education. This study was conducted with 273 first-year students in two universities in Korea. Following were the results: First, there were Sensing learners(72.2%), Visual learners(84.6%), Reflective learners(64.8%), and Sequential learners(58.2%) and the level of learning strategies was 3.28(SD=0.38). Secondly, the finding revealed that there was only significant difference in learning strategies on Information processing dimension and Active students demonstrated higher level of learning strategies than Reflective students. To be more specific, there were significant differences in cognitive, meta-cognitive, and internal and external management. For engineering education, implications for teaching strategies in classroom and self-regulated learning strategies were discussed.

A study on the relationship between learning styles of students and academic achievement in mathematics - Focusing on freshmen enrolled in a college of science and engineering of the medium-sized university (대학생의 학습유형과 대학 수학교과의 학업성취도 관계 연구 - 수도권 중규모 대학교의 이공대학 신입생을 중심으로)

  • This study examines the learning styles of freshmen enrolled in a college of science and engineering, and analyses the relationship between learning styles and academic achievement in mathematics to provide basic data for the teaching-learning methods, which are more suitable to learning styles of students. For the purpose of this research, a reliability analysis of Kolb's LSI is applied to 282 freshmen enrolled in a college of science and engineering of the medium-sized university. The outcomes of this survey are followings. Firstly, students hold higher positions in the order of converger, assimilator, accommodator, diverger among 4 learning styles. Secondly, while there is a positive corelation between abstract conceptualization[AC] and academic achievement, there is a negative corelation between concrete experience[CE] and academic achievement. Thirdly, as for academic achievement in mathematics, converger is superior to assimilator and accommodator. Finally, the correlation between learning styles and academic achievement is different by demographic characteristics. Based on these results, this study suggests the necessity for various teaching-learning strategies, which are adjusted to both academic characteristics of mathematics and learning styles. Also, the need for teaching methods, which help students to develop effectively four learning cycles, is proposed.

  • 공주대학교는 2005년 3월 천안공업대학과의 통합을 완료함으로써 정부의 구조개혁을 통한 대학 특성화 및 경쟁력 강화 정책을 시행에 옮긴 최초의 대학이 되었다. 통합 이후 지역 인재 양성과 지역 발전을 선도하는 충남 지역 중심대학으로서의 역할을 담당하게 되었다. 또한 통합을 통해 정원 감축, 교육 여건 개선, 중복 투자 감축 효과 등 대학경영의 효율성 제고를 통한 대학경쟁력 향상의 결과를 기대할 수 있게 되었다. 향후 통합이 안정화되어 시너지 효과를 발휘하기 위해서는 천안캠퍼스 공간문제 해결, 교육 및 연구 인적 인프라 정착을 위한 구성원 간의 조화, 행.재정 조율, 우수 신입생 유치, 공주캠퍼스 공과대학의 이전 완결, 계획된 발전계획의 가시화 등의 문제점이 있는데 공주대학교는 이를 극복함으로써 통합의 진정한 완성을 통한 대학 발전의 극대화를 위해 전력을 기울이고 있다.

A Study on Enhancement of Mathematics Education for Engineering College in Sang-Myung University (상명대학교 공과대학 수학교육 강화방안 연구)

  • Recently, the number of applicants for the engineering college is gradually decreased all over the nation. Additionally, the concerns of fall of freshman mathematical ability are raised due to the incomplete high school education. Therefore, the local universities endeavor in order to improve the quality of mathematics education, and study the countermeasure against the crisis. As part of these efforts, Sang-Myung University founds the innovation center for engineering education. The center derives several ideas in order to enhance the mathematics education quality. In this paper, the enhancement plans for the mathematics education in Sang-Myung University are proposed. Results in this paper will be helpful for other university to enhance the mathematics education as reference materials.

  • The deterioration of freshmen's scholastic performance has been markedly intensified and this phenomenon leads to serious problem in managing a college curriculum. In this study, peer tutoring, as a learning ability improvement program in Hoseo university, was introduced and the influence of the program on freshmen's scholastic performance was analyzed. In managing the program, a spontaneous participation of students was guided, a systematical network was built up among participants, tasks were assigned to participants and the results were verified for the improvement of the program. As a result, it was considered that peer tutoring strengthened the relationship among students, increased the leadership and responsibility as well as helped to enhance the interest in studying and improved the scholastic performance for both tutors and tutees.

  • This paper is a basic study of college of engineering freshmen's adaptation to college life, and the relationship between sub-variables of academic self-efficacy, learning immersion, and academic curiosity is analyzed. And based on the results, a plan to support new students of the College of engineering is suggested.

  • This study examines the relationship between prior learning experience, the high school records, mathematics grade in the KSAT(Korean Scholastic Aptitude Test) and mathematics achievement, GPA(grade point average) of college freshmen. It analyses how much mathematics capacities in the time of high school affect mathematics achievement of college freshmen. This study surveyed 193 freshmen, attending in a college of science and engineering, taking the 'basic differential and integral calculus' lecture, which was opened for the first semester of 2014 in the A university. The data processing was fulfilled by means of technical statistics, correlation analysis, difference test, ANOVA, ex post facto test, and regression analysis. The outcomes of this survey are followings: Firstly, over 90 percent of college freshmen underwent prior learning of mathematics when they attended high school. Secondly, their perception of effectiveness for prior learning is founded to be meaningfully lower than their perception of its needfulness. Thirdly, while there is higher positive correlation between mathematics achievement and GPA in the college, there is little correlation between high school records and GPA in the college. Also, there is little correlation between mathematics grade in the KSAT and mathematics achievement in the college. Fourthly, the accomplishments in the high school(The high school records, mathematics grade in the KSAT) and the efforts, satisfaction, necessity, etc. for prior learning had little effect on academic achievement in college mathematics. Based on these results, this study makes some suggestions for developing academical achievement in college mathematics.

The relationship among self-efficacy, engineering interest and social support on adjustment to college and learning persistence in first year engineering college students (공과대학 신입생의 자기효능감, 공학흥미, 사회적지지, 대학생활적응 및 학업지속의향 간의 관계)

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the relationship among self-efficacy, engineering interest and social support on adjustment to college and learning persistence in first year engineering college students. The participants were 74 freshman of engineering college students, SPSS and SmartPLS were used to analyze the data. The key findings revealed were as follows: First, self-efficacy, engineering interest and social support had a significant influence on adjustment to college. Second, engineering interest and adjustment to college had a significant influence on learning persistence. This research suggested the implications for adjustment to college and learning persistence in engineering education.

  • 본 연구에서는 컴퓨터의 개념을 학부 신입생 교육과정에서 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록 ARM 명령어 집합의 부분 집합을 정의하고, 어셈블리 언어 코드를 입력받아 실행하는 가상 머신을 설계하고 구현하였다. 기존 교육 과정의 컴퓨터 구조 과목에서 다루는 어셈블리 언어는 실제의 머신을 기반으로 하기 때문에 개념을 학습하는데 있어서 불필요하게 복잡하다는 단점이 있다. 하지만 본 연구에서는 교육에 필요한 내용만을 포함한 가상 머신을 새롭게 정의함으로써 좀 더 우아한 방법으로 컴퓨터의 개념을 이해할 수 있도록 하였다. 특히 어셈블리 언어 학습을 통해서 컴퓨터 구조와 고급 언어 간의 상호작용을 이해하는데 도움이 될 수 있다. 제안한 가상 머신은 자바로 구현하였으며, 스캐너 및 파서를 구현하기 위해서 오픈소스 컴파일러-컴파일러 시스템을 사용하였다. 해당 가상 머신은 공과대학 학부 신입생을 위한 실습 프로그램으로 사용되었으며 컴퓨터 개념의 이해를 돕는데 유의미한 기여를 하였다.

Comments on mathematics diagnostic tests and education by level for under achieving first year engineering students (공학인증 기초수학에서 학습부진 학생 학업성취도 향상을 위한 방안 탐색)

  • We carried out mathematics diagnostic tests for all first year engineering students at C University in Daejeon in 2008, covering precalculus and basic calculus. Then we divided into two classes such as regular and supplementary classes. The supplementary class students are lower 13% students. Then we gave extra classes for these students to support their basic and elementary calculus skills. As a result, these supplementary students received a meaningful accomplishment at the final exam. This paper analyzes the results and effects of various types of supplementary classes such as education by level, and proposes some strategies to enhance mathematics learning, particularly for under achieving first year engineering students.
