Development of Educational Program for Rocket Science for High School Students (로켓 추진 원리를 이용한 고등학생 대상 과학교육프로그램 개발)

  • This paper aims to design an educational science program based on rocket propulsion for high school students. Curriculum in high school physics and chemistry were evaluated to find out scientific match with basic principles in rocket propulsion. Also model rocketry was implemented as a part of the educational program. Solid propellants were prepared by the combination of sorbitol and candy after a selection process for solid propellant from several high caloric food candidates. Specially, this program was intended to give an opportunity to organize basic knowledge of high school science with model rocketry by measuring combustion temperature, thrust level of developed propellants. A pilot operation of the program was done with four high school students to evaluate the achievement of final goals of the program both in technical and educational aspect.

  • Characteristic of thermal reaction of Kevlar/EPDM internal insulator used in a solid rocket motor chamber was investigated at 1,030 psi, 35.86 s and 1,406 psi, 36.63 s. Surface status after test was similar each other and thermal destruction depth was 4.10 mm and 4.18 mm, respectively. Kinetic constant ${\xi}$, ${\zeta}$ and thermal destruction velocity $V_{TD}$ were also similar. It was concluded that characteristics of thermal reaction of Kevlar/EPDM internal insulator were not affected by change of chamber pressure.

  • The mortar system is useful for infantry because of effectiveness to position operation and to attack at opposite slope that can not reached by direct-firing guns and howitzers. The Army continuously has researched on 120mm mortar system, and insist needs for 120mm mortar system with advanced accuracy, mobility and range. In this study, we had designed the formulation of solid rocket propellants applied on 120mm rocket assisted projectile, and fabricated a prototype, and investigated feasibility of rocket assisted projectile for 120mm mortar results from static firing and flight test.

Performance Analysis of the Nozzleless Booster (무노즐 부스터 성능해석)

  • Nozzleless booster is one of the applicable components for integral rocket ramjet (IRR). In order to predict nozzleless solid booster performance, the simplified theoretical analysis was applied for L/D=5, 6, 7, 9, 11, and 13. Al-HTPB and Zr-HTPB propellant with a high metal content were used to increase the hardness because of the combustion gas flow effect. It was found that the trends between the simplified theoretical analysis and experiments were similar.

  • Two erosive burning models were applied to compare analysis results of ballistic for the internal ballistics of solid rocket motors. By comparing motor tests with results of analysis, the variance of a grain shape was analyzed and coefficients of erosive burning were drawn. Results of comparison presents that the coefficient of erosive burning was proportional to the change of burning area, while inversely proportional to the change of cross area.

  • Rocket nozzle components and thrusters for next-generation solid rocket with variable thrust, and small uncooled liquid rocket thrusters are required to withstand ultra-high temperature upto $2500^{\circ}C$. In this survey, the operationg environments are investigated with the suggeations of proper materials and their fabrication methods. Especially, It is suggested that Rhenium and other competative matrials are exploited to $2500^{\circ}C$ hot components, and thus needed to be developed.

  • Combustion Characteristic with initial port-diameter of fuel was studied in hybrid propulsion system using cylindrical single port-grain. In order to understand a variation of combustion characteristic with initial port-diameter, experimental studies were performed with the GOX and $GN_2O$ as oxidizer, and PE as fuel. As results, burning rate decreased with increase of initial port-diameter of fuel. And the variation of burning rate with using $GN_2O$ is smaller than using GOX.

  • In this study, the design criteria is presented for Finocyl grain, which is easy to generate neutral thrust when designing solid rocket motors. For this purpose, an automated program using drafting method was developed for burn-back analysis and its accuracy was validated. Using this developed program, burn-back analysis was performed with various configuration parameters of Finocyl grain, and the tendency and sensitivity analysis on burning characteristics were performed. Based on this analysis, the design criteria were presented to generate the neutral burning surface area trace for a Finocyl grain.

  • The star-shaped propellant grain can be used for designing burning surface areas with various profiles and are easy to manufacture, so it can be usefully applied to actual solid rocket motors. However, since there are many design-related configuration variables and slivers at the end of combustion, it is difficult to achieve an optimal design using a general optimization technique. In this study, the new method for designing star grains using a database was proposed to increase usability and success rate of optimization design. In the proposed method, a solution that satisfies the requirements is obtained after defining the performance variables, constructing the database. By applying the proposed method, the design of star grains with various profiles of the burning surface area was performed, and the validity of the design method was confirmed.
