Marine Terraces and Quaternary Faults in the Homigot and the Guryongpo, SE Korea (호미곶과 구룡포지역 해안단구와 신기지구조운동)

  • Three Quaternary faults have been revealed in marine terraces nearby the Homigot and the Gurongpo in the southeastern offshore of Korean Peninsula. The Hajung fault cuts the $4^{th}$ marine terraces and the Guman fault the $2^{nd}$, respectively. The Hajung fault strikes $N55^{\circ}$ to $45^{\circ}W$ and dips $40^{\circ}$ to $45^{\circ}NE$ with reverse-displacement of 180cm vertically. There are four sets of colluvial sediment strata that would be produced by faulting and indicate four times of fault movements during MIS 7 and MIS 5c. The Guman fault site consists of three sets of reverse faults that strike $N80^{\circ}E$ to $N70^{\circ}W$ and dip $25^{\circ}{\sim}35^{\circ}SE$ to $30^{\circ}SW$ with vertical displacement of 9~18 cm. The Guman faulting occurred during 80 ka (MIS 5a) to 71 ka (MIS 4) but it extends only to the lowest bed, the pebble sand bed, lay just on the unconformity, and not to the upper. Considering the attitude of the faults, we inferred that the Hajung fault was activated under the ENE-WSW compression during MIS 7 to MIS 5c and the Guman under N-S trending compression during MIS 5a. Using the OSL age dating results, we reconfirmed that the $2^{nd}$ terrace is correlated to MIS 5a and the $4^{th}$ terraces to MIS 7.

Mathematical Description of Soil Loss by Runoff at Inclined Upland of Maize Cultivation (옥수수 재배 경사지 밭에서 물 유출에 따른 토양유실 예측 공식)

  • Soil loss into stream and river by runoff shall be considered for non-point source pollution management as national land conservation. The purpose of this study was to develop the mathematical equation to predict soil loss from inclined uplands of maize cultivation due to the runoff by rainfall which mainly converges on July and August. Soil loss was concentrated on May because of low canopy over an entire field in 2002 and on June and July because of heavy rainfall in 2003. By regression analysis the relation between runoff and soil loss can be represented by a linear equation of y =1.5291x - 3.4933, where y is runoff ($Mg\;ha^{-1}$) and x is soil loss ($kg\;ha^{-1}$). The determination coefficient of this equation was 0.839 (P<0.001). Therefore, the mathematical equation derived from the practical experiment at the inclined upland can be applicable to predict soil loss accompanied by runoff due to periodic rainfall converging on short periods within a couple of months.

Characterization of Odontoblasts in Supernumerary Tooth-derived Dental Pulp Stem Cells between Passages by Real-Time PCR (과잉치 치수유래 줄기세포의 Real-time PCR에 의한 계대간 상아질모세포 발현 특성)

  • The aim of this study is to compare the properties of odontoblast gene of early passage cells and late passage cells derived from impacted maxillary supernumerary teeth. Impacted supernumerary teeth with maxilla were extracted from 12 patients (8 males, 4 females) between 6 - 9 years old without medical history. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was conducted to compare characterization of odontoblast cell in the 3rd and 10th passage, and between with bone inducing additive group and without additive group. Genes for odontoblasts characteristics are osteonectin (ONT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), osteocalcin (OCN), dentin matrix protein 1 (DMP-1) and dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP). The level of gene expression was in a decreasing order of ONT, ALP, OCN, DMP-1 and DSPP in the 3rd passage, and in decreasing order of ONT, DMP-1, OCN, ALP, and DSPP in the 10th passage in the undifferentiation and differentiation group. The order of ONT, DMP-1, and OCN did not changed. ALP and DMP-1 were switched in order. ALP and DMP-1 may be used as important markers for differentiating between the 3rd passage and 10th passage cells. Considering that supernumerary tooth was extracted young age and the time required to cultured 10th passage was short, supernumerary tooth can be considered a useful donor site of dental pulp stem cells.

Knowledge, Attitude and Health Behaviors Related to Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Postmenopausal Women Workers (폐경기 여성 근로자의 심뇌혈관질환 예방 관련 지식, 태도 및 건강행위에 관한 융합 연구)

  • This study was conducted from November 1, 2017 to November 30, 2017 in 268 women in late postmenopausal period in D and S shipyards located in G city. The subjects were divided into two groups according to the risk factors of cerebrovascular disease according to the presence or absence of risk factors of cerebrovascular disease. The subjects were divided into two groups according to their general characteristics, cerebrovascular disease prevention knowledge, attitude and health behavior. The variables that had statistically significant difference in health group and risk group were age (F=92.239, p<.001), cohabitation type ($x^2=20.056$, p<.001), income level ($x^2=39.023$, p<.001), the number of working hours per week (F=32.217, p<.001), the number of working years (F=12.310, p=.001), family history of cardiovascular disease ($x^2=233.442$, p<.001), subjective health status($x^2=19.058$, p=.001). There was a significant difference between the two groups in the degree of knowledge related to prevention of cardiovascular disease (F=2.679, p=.008) and health behavior fulfillment (F=4.339, p<.001). (r=.348, p<.001), the risk group had a higher knowledge (r=.279, p=.002), and the other group Attitude (r=.194, p=.030) showed a statistically significant correlation. Based on this, it is necessary to develop and apply an intervention program considering the characteristics of vulnerable group of cerebrovascular disease.

Future water supply risk analysis using a joint drought management index in Nakdong river basin (결합가뭄관리지수(JDMI)를 이용한 낙동강 유역의 미래 용수공급 위험도 분석)

  • Water supply system aims to meet the user's demand by securing water resources in a stable way. However, water supply failure sometimes happens because inflow decreases during drought period. Droughts induced by the lack of precipitation do not always lead to water supply failures. Thus, it is necessary to consider features of actual water shortage event when we evaluate a water supply risk. In this study, we developed a new drought index for drought management, i.e., Joint Drought Management Index (JDMI), using two water supply system performance indices such as reliability and vulnerability. Future data that were estimated from GCMs according to RCP 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios were used to estimate future water supply risk. After dividing the future period into three parts, the risk of water supply failure in the Nakdong River basin was analyzed using the JDMI. As a result, the risk was higher with the RCP 4.5 than the RCP 8.5. In case of RCP 4.5, W18 (Namgangdam) was identified as the most vulnerable area, whereas in case of RCP 8.5, W23 (Hyeongsangang) and W33 (Nakdonggangnamhae) were identified as the most vulnerable area.

A Study on the Character and Historical Significance of Sanskrit Roof Tiles in the Hoeamsa Temple of Yangju City (양주 회암사지 출토 범자 진언명(眞言銘) 기와의 특징과 의의)

  • The Hoeamsa Temple of Yangju City was established at least during the late Korea Dynasty. This temple was rebuilt several times with the support of the royal family from the late Korea Dynasty to the early Joseon Dynasty. It was continually rebuilt in association with JiGong monk, HyeKeun monk, and MuHak monk. Hoeamsa temple was leading the Buddhist culture as a Buddhist center of the Joseon Dynasty . It was destroyed in the late Joseon Period. This site has been excavated several times since 1997. Various roofing tiles were unearthed. Of these tiles the edge of eaves are the artifacts showing the best features of this era. In this temple site has been excavated a variety of Sanskrit roof tiles. These tiles were made using superior technique. On the roof tiles are engraved Sanskrit mantras with a variety of 1 to 9 words. The jeongbeopkkye mantra(oṃ raṃ) and six-word mantra(oṃ ma ṇi pa dme hūṃ) were discovered the most. These mantras were believe to expel several evils from the Buddhist temple. It must have been that the six-word mantra culture became prevalent and provided a turning point in the history of Korean Buddhism. We can clearly know when some of the Sanskrit roof tiles were first manufactured. These roof tiles are the absolute standard of the other Sanskrit roof tiles excavated from different Buddhist temples. The master craftsmen must have been very skilled, understood the mantra very well, and had deep faith in the Sanskrit mantra. Hoeamsa Temple is a milestone in studying the Sanskrit roof tiles. More studies on various aspects are expected to be followed.

The Culture of Appreciating Pigeons in Korean Traditional Landscape Gardens (전통 원림에 도입된 비둘기 완상 문화)

  • This study attempted to examine the loving pigeon culture practiced in traditional gardens and to illuminate the aspect of pigeons as a landscape animal material. In order to understand the culture of enjoying old garden through pigeons, the contents were analyzed for the translated version of the old literatures and paintings. Pigeons have been used as Jeonseo-gu(傳書鳩) and also for medicinal purposes and food. Pigeons have various symbolic meanings such as abundance, hospitality, and longevity. From the Goryeo Dynasty to the early Joseon Dynasty, pigeons were raised in the palace and private garden. In the late Joseon Dynasty, temporary trend of ornamental pigeon culture occurred. Pigeons were synesthesia materials that enriched the forest. Various beautiful pigeons created a variable landscape of the primeval forest as a moving landscape material. The bell sounds that appear differently depending on the pigeon's movement led to a rich auditory experience of the landscape. The pigeon house was an ornamental element that enriched the old garden along with the pigeon. The owners of garden were involved in gardening through the act of buying a pigeon house and placing it in the garden or making a pigeon house themselves. In addition, the writers planted plum trees, peach trees, apricot trees, and hawthorn trees as a symbol of spring and a source of food for pigeons, and expressed them in poems and paintings. This study has a limitation in that the translation of the old text was used as an analysis data. The follow-up studies on specific cases of raising pigeons in the old garden, in modern and contemporary landscape spaces are urged.

The Study on Process of Illustrious Virtue Becoming an Issue in Horak debate (湖洛論爭) - Focused on Oiam(巍巖) Yi Gan(李柬)'s distiction between Mind(心) and temperament(氣質) (호락논쟁에서 명덕(明德)의 쟁점화 과정 연구 - 외암(巍巖) 이간(李柬)의 심(心)과 기질(氣質)의 분변(分辨)을 중심으로 -)

  • In late Chosen(朝鮮), the concept of illustrious virtue(明德) became an important issue of debate. However, previous studies did not focus on how the concept emerged as an issue. This paper aimed to explore the problem, and for this purpose, paid attention to Horak(湖洛) debate. Oiam(巍巖) Yi Gan(李柬), in the course of discussion with Namdang(南塘), finally argued that mind(心) clearly distinguishes from temperament(氣質). The goals of the claim were to clearly divide mind and temperament, and to emphasize mind's control of temperament. Through this, he wanted to reject the possibility of being affected by temperament in aroused state(未發). And he presented the concept of illustrious virtue as a critical evidence supporting his argument. He argued that because mind is same with illustrious virtue, it has a special status that essentially distinguished from the temperament, even if both mind and temperament are all material force(氣). This argument led to new discussion trend in the debate. it was to form a definition of the mind, based on defining the relationship between spiritual perception(虛靈知覺), temperament and illustrious virtue. The trend was reflected in the debate on 'Whether illustrious virtue is the same for everyone or varies from person to person(明德分殊)'. Through the process of analysis in this paper, we could detect a tendency that definition of mind has become an independent subject.

Spawning Period Characteristics and Early Life History of the Eight Barbel Loach, Lefua costata (Pisces: Balitoridae) (쌀미꾸리(Lefua costata)의 산란기 특징 및 초기생활사)

  • This study was conducted to elucidate spawning period characteristics and early life development of eight barbel loach, Lefua costata (Balitoridae) at the Jusucheon stream, Okgye-myeon, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do, Korea between January and December in 2018. The spawning period was estimated to be from May to August, considering the change in the gonad-somatic index, the appearance of young fry, and frequency distribution in egg diameter. It was a multi-spawning type. The gender ratio was 1:0.79 with 1,117 females and 879 males collected. The egg size was 0.24-0.93 mm, with mature and immature eggs found during the spawning period. The size of mature eggs was 0.71±0.02 mm, and the average number of fecundity was 1,786±818 (n=31). Observation of the egg development showed that the fertilized eggs were the sticky, gray, segregated, and demersal type with 0.76±0.03 mm in diameter. The hatching of the embryos began at about 34 hours (hatching rate 50%) after fertilization underwater temperature of 25℃. The average length of the newly hatched pre-larvae was 2.7±0.11 mm. The average length of pre-larvae at 4 days after hatching was 4.5±0.16 mm, and the yolk sac was completely absorbed and entered the post-larvae stage. At 20 days after hatching, the average length of post-larvae was 11.5±0.67 mm, and their fin rays were formed before they transitioned to the juvenile stage. At 100 days after hatching, the average length reached 49.8±2.60 mm, and the appearance and the lateral sideband patterns were similar to those of the adult fish.

A Comparative Analysis of the New Religious Thought Generated by Indigenous Korean Religions from a Subaltern Perspective: Focusing on Choi Je-woo, Kang Il-sun, and Park Jungbin ('서발턴(subaltern)'의 관점에서 본 한국의 자생 신종교 사상 - 수운, 증산, 소태산의 비교를 중심으로 -)

  • In early modern Korea, the founders of three main-stream indigenous new religions, Choi Je-woo (崔濟愚), Kang Il-sun (姜一淳), and Park Jungbin (朴重彬), were all ruined yangban, who could no longer maintain the social dignity of yangban. Prior to their regular religious activities, they earned livings as rural teachers, peasants, merchants, and fortune-tellers. They were marginalized for having declined from upper-class nobles to lower-class people. Due to their subalternal status, they religiously represented the inexpressible aspirations and resentments held by various subalterns. The millennial movements of marginal religions in the late Joseon Dynasty exposed and deviated from the fetters of the established order, but they did not propose a new alternative order to replace it. Unlike these millennial movements, Choi Je-woo, Kang Il-sun, and Park Jungbin all proposed utopian visions of post-subalternal alternative religions that systematically presented and practiced new alternative worldviews characterized by the "Great Opening of the Later World (後天開闢)." The world they longed for was one wherein anti-subalternal social regulation were overthrown, the oppression of various subalterns end, and the established social order was replaced. In this article, I have argued that three main-stream indigenous Korean new religions, Donghak (Eastern Learning), the Jeungsan-inspired religious movements, and Wonbulgyo (Won Buddhism) are utopian alternative religions. I made this argument by analyzing some aspects by which they represented subalterns and offered subalterns a new religio-social status.
