The Comparisons of Perception for Operation Form among Science Academy, Science High School, and Ordinary High School : Focusing on Educational Experiences of Beneficiaries of Science-Gifted Education (과학영재학교, 과학고, 일반고의 운영 형태에 대한 인식 비교 - 과학영재교육 수혜자들의 교육 경험을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the differences in the operation form of science academy, science high school, and ordinary high school. We tried to find what kinds of variables differ in operation form based on the perception of the beneficiaries. For this purpose, 288 beneficiaries were surveyed. The groups were divided into three groups according to the high school they graduated from and then the differences among the groups were compared. The results are as follows. First, as a result of comparing the operation form according to high school using the most similar system design, it was confirmed that there are differences in curriculum and teacher variables. Second, as the result of analyzing the perception of curriculum and teacher professionalism based on the education experience of the beneficiary, the satisfaction for science academy was higher, but the satisfaction for science in ordinary high school was lower. Third, the key variables showing the differences in the operation forms between science academy and science high school were the learning contents, learning process and learning environment. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic data for future improvement of gifted education curriculum.

The Effects of a Problem-Based Learning Program Titled 'Designing Safe and Strong Bridge' on the Scientific Attitudes, Science Career Orientation, and Leadership of Scientifically Gifted High School Students ('튼튼하고 안전한 다리 설계' 문제중심학습(PBL) 프로그램이 고등학교 과학영재의 과학적 태도, 과학 진로지향도 및 리더십에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted in order to investigate how a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) program titled(called) 'Designing Safe and Strong Bridge' effects scientifically gifted students' scientific attitude, scientific career orientation and leadership. The participants were 19 scientifically gifted students in the second grade in C high school in Gyeonggi province; they were selected by participation in the tri-level gifted students identification step. Before and after 14 units of the program, the participants were asked to take tests about scientific attitude, scientific career orientation and leadership and to write a review about the PBL program at the end. The major results of this study are as follows. First, participants' scientific attitude was statistically significantly improved after the PBL program (p<.05). In the sub-domain of this area, six parts excluding the part of openness were significantly developed. Second, the degree of scientific career orientation was statistically significantly improved after the PBL program (p<.05). All 4 sub-domains in the degree of scientific career were significantly developed. Third, all of leadership scores were statistically significantly increased after the PBL program (p<.05). In the first factor, the parts of inner and inter personal characteristics were significantly developed. According to their post-program opinions, participants developed in terms of all the secondary factors, such as ability of interpersonal relation, consideration for others and groups, responsibility for the task, confidence and vision, during the process of PBL problem-solving in the small group work.

A Comparative Study of Self Esteem and Reactions on Landscape Montage Test between Scientifically Gifted High School Students and General High School Students (과학영재 고등학생과 일반계 고등학생의 자아존중감과 풍경구성법 반응특성에 관한 비교 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine self esteem and reactions on LMT projective technique to a group of scientifically gifted high school students and general high school students. For that purpose, 113 participants from scientifically gifted high school and general high school were asked to fill out self esteem questionnaire and draw a LMT. The results were analyzed by using SPSS.PASW18. The results are as follows: First, overall self esteem of gifted students were higher than general students. Second, reactions on LMT of gifted students and general students were examined. As a result, there were statistically significant differences in four items; integration of landscape composition, expression of distance and space, number of additional items, existence of doors and windows. The result of this study showed significant differences between the two groups in self esteem and LMT scores.

  • In this study, the instrument of mathematical thinking ability tests were considered, and the differences between gifted and regular high school students in the ability were investigated by the test. The instrument consists of 9 items, and verified its quality due to reliability. Participants were 353 regular and 252 gifted high school students from tenth grade. As a result, not only organizing ability of information but also ability of space perception and visualization and intuitive insight ability could be the characteristics of the mathematical giftedness.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the education system for science 34gifted/talented students in Korea. There are fifteen science gifted/talented education centers established in major universities, sixteen science high schools and one research center for the gifted education in science located at KAIST. To examine the selection procedure and the curriculum of the education centers and science high schools, the annual reports of the fifteen education centers and the annual plans of sixteen science high schools are analyzed. About 200 gifted/talented students are employed in the field of science, mathematics and information science at each education center, Multidimentional education system is developed for efficient way of teaching for the gifted. The curriculum and teaching method for each education center is unique and different from the science high schools that follow nationally given form. This study shows new selection method and unique curriculum for the science gifted/talented students employed in the education centers. Also, current situation of science high schools are reported in this study. Finally we suggest the systematic way of developing the education system for the gifted in science in korea.

  • This paper is focused on the development of sea wave experimental module for the science gifted students and the potential of its application in high school earth science. Sea wave experimental module for the gifted was characteristics by five phases: Engagement, Exploration, Explanation, Elaboration, and Expansion. Subjects were 16 gifted students, who were 10th graders and have been taught in the adjacent Education Institute for the gifted of Education Districts, Daejeon Metropolitan Office of Education The changes of inquiry ability and knowledge achievement were analyzed according to analysis of experimental report and pre-test and post-test. Experimental module for the gifted was very effective on inquiry skills as follows: control of variables, experimental designing, and selecting tools of experimental process. And also it was positively effective on achievement. The result of this study suggested that experimental module for the science gifted should be very meaningfully to improve scientific ability of them, and the development and application of experimental module for the science gifted be needed for them.

Comparison of Perception on the Korean Gifted Education in Science among the Science Teachers of Formal Schools for the Gifted in Science, District Institutes for the Gifted Education, and General Secondary Schools (정규 과학영재학교, 교육청 영재교육원, 일반 중.고등학교 과학교사의 과학영재교육에 대한 인식 비교 연구)

  • The purposes of this study are to investigate Korean science teachers' perception on the science gifted education in Korea, and to investigate if there are differences on their perception among the science teachers whose institutes are different. Their institutes are divided into three groups, which are the formal schools for the gifted in science such as Science High-School, gifted education centers attached to district education authority, and general secondary schools. For the study, 266 science teachers were sampled from the schools in Busan Metro-city, Ulsan Metro-city, and Kyoungnam Province, and then questionnaire developed by the authors were administered to them. The research results are as follows. Firstly, teachers who were going to participate in special education for the gifted in science answered affirmatively, and they thought it seemed worthwhile. On the other hand teachers who were not going to participate in it, answered negatively, mentioning shortage in specialty or extra work overload. Secondly, only the Korean Educational Development Institute was too much preferred by science teachers for teacher training institute for the gifted education in science. Therefore, it is needed to extend the teacher training institutes for the gifted education in science throughout the country. Thirdly, the perception of science teachers on the constitution of a class for the gifted in science is very different among the teachers of formal schools for the gifted in science and the teachers who teach science part time when it is needed in the district institutes for the gifted education. Finally, the perception on the aims of special education for the gifted in science is very different between the teachers who teach the gifted in science and the teachers who do not teach them.

A Study on the Gifted Education System in North Korea (북한의 영재교육 제도 고찰)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the gifted education system in North Korea. The study analysed various literature, articles, and internet resources concerning education in general and gifted education in North Korea. The findings of the study are as follows: First, in recent years North Korea has emphasized gifted education to advance the level of science and technology, especially in the field of information technology and computer science. Second, North Korea already introduced the gifted education system by establishing music schools, foreign language schools, art schools, dance schools, and athletics schools in 1960. Third, North Korea has established special schools for the gifted in science since 1984. The schools play an important role in advancing the country's science and technology. Fourth, in North Korea there are special courses in colleges and universities for the gifted in various fields. Fifth, North Korea has implemented the consistent and interrelated system of gifted education from kindergarten level to higher education level.

An Analysis on Behavior Characteristics between Gifted Students and Talented Students in Open-end Mathematical Problem Solving (개방형 문제 해결과정에서 수학 영재아와 수학 우수아의 행동특성 분석)

  • This study is intended to reconsider the meaning of the education for gifted/talented children, the foundation object of science high school by examining the behavior characteristics between gifted students and talented students in open-end mathematical problem solving and to provide the basis for realization of 'meaningful teaming' tailored to the learner's level, the essential of school education. For the study, 8 students (4 gifted students and 4 talented students) were selected out of the 1 st grade students in science high school through the distinction procedure of 3 steps and the behavior characteristics between these two groups were analyzed according to the basis established through the literature survey. As the results of this study, the following were founded. (1) It must be recognized that the constituent members of science high school were not the same excellent group and divided into the two groups, gifted students who showed excellence in overall field of mathematical behavior characteristics and talented students who had excellence in learning ability of mathematics. (2) The behavior characteristics between gifted students and talented students, members of science high school is understood and a curriculum of science high school must include a lesson for improving the creativity as the educational institutions for gifted/talented students, unlike general high school. Based on these results, it is necessary to try to find a support plan that it reduces the case which gifted students are generalized with common talented students by the same curriculum and induces the meaningful loaming to learners, the essential of school education.

The Effects of Ill-Structured Problem Solving Program on the Social Self-efficacy, Democratic Citizenship, and Meta-cognition of the Scientifically Gifted High School Students (비구조화된 문제해결 프로그램이 고등학교 과학영재의 사회적 자기효능감, 민주시민의식 및 메타인지에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of ill-structured problem solving program on the social self-efficacy, democratic citizenship, and meta-cognition of the scientifically gifted high school students and provide an opportunity to consider how to improve students' social self-efficacy, democratic citizenship, and meta-cognition when comprehensive character education has been emphasized in science programs for gifted students. The subjects consisted of 17 students(10th graders) and 19 students(11th graders) who were participated in a science gifted program in a Korean high school located in Seoul and pre-examination on their social self-efficacy, democratic citizenship, and meta-cognition was conducted. After applying 12-class-time of ill-structured problem solving program, post-examination on their social self-efficacy, democratic citizenship, and meta-cognition was conducted and student's self-essay about program was also conducted. Paired t-test was used to analyze the data collected and students's self-essays were also analyzed. The results of this study were as follows: First, the findings showed that ill-structured problem solving program developed students' social self-efficacy and especially showed a significant improvement in asking for help. Second, they also showed that ill-structured problem solving program raised students' democratic participation especially in a democratic function. Third, in terms of meta-cognition, ill-structured problem solving program also played a positive role. The result of analyzing students' essays also showed students' positive perception on the program. The findings of the present study suggested that ill-structured problem solving program should be taken into consideration when developing a science program for scientifically gifted high school students.
