  • This study is a descriptive survey to examine the dementia related attitudes and dementia preventive behaviors in middle aged and to determine the relationships between the both sides. In this study, between October 1st and 9th, 2017, data were collected from the middle aged people in their 40s~60s in Korea through online questionnaires. Finally, 220 questionnaires were analyzed by t-test One way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and etc. The results of the study are as follows. First, 52.7% of the subjects were interested in prevention of dementia, but only 5.9% of them had experience of receiving education related to dementia. Second, fear of dementia was higher than cancer, cerebrovascular disease, and cardiovascular disease, but confidence in coping with the disease, expectation of the possibility of maintaining the daily life, expectation of the help of the family and the surrounding people, expectation of the national medical and economic support were significantly lower. Third, as the dementia preventive behaviors were implemented, the confidence in overcoming the disease, the expectation of the possibility of maintaining the daily life, the expectation of the help of the family and the surrounding people, the expectation of the medical and economic support of the country increased and the burden of the treatment cost was lowered. As a result, it is thought that this personal and social effort will improve the quality of life of the people by reducing physical, psychological, social and economic problems caused by dementia.

This study carried out a survey of 102 families of the mentally disabled registered in the mental health centers and social rehabilitation facilities in Seoul, Gyeonggi and Incheon areas. As a result, first, the burden of caring for families of the mentally disabled has a negative impact on the quality of life. Second, family resilience has a moderating effect on the relationship between the burden of care and the quality of life of families of the mentally disabled. The subscales of family resilience were all buffered. Finally, social support has proved to be moderating in the relationship between the burden of care and the quality of life. Based on the results of this study, it was suggested that the need for providing information for improving the resilience of the family is needed, and the institutional support to mitigate the economic burden of the mental disabled family's social support network is needed.

Data were collected from 323 grandmothers raising infant grandchildren who are under 6 years of age in double-earner households in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do and six metropolitan cities. According to the hierarchy multiple regression analysis, grandmothers' caregiving reward was found to be significantly high. It was also appeared that main factors of the rewards of grandmother were grandparents meaning, relationship with adult children and economic level. This study implies that improving grandparents meaning, relationship with adult children, and economic support may be a strategy to enhance the reward of grandmothers raising infant grandchildren. These findings suggest that there is a need to provide intervention and welfare policy for elderly caregiver.

  • Aids to Navigation(AtoN) Accident can reduce the credibility of AtoN by adding extra works to the administrators, and cause burdens and inconveniences to the users during their navigation leading to social costs (or economic losses). Prior research on social cost estimation model to determine the Encounter cost, Administrative cost and Risk cost on the Aton model was done to estimate the economic losses due to AtoN Accident. However, this research could not provide adequate study results on risk cost estimates. Therefore, this study complements the estimation model presented in the previous study, and the estimated social cost of 249 AtoN Accidents that occurred during the last 10 years (2008-2017) in the Busan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries jurisdiction area. The risk cost was estimated using contingent valuation method since the AtoN is a non-market goods. As a result, the social cost of AtoN Accidents for the past 10 years was estimated to total 12.4 billion won including Encounter cost of 3.1 billion won (25.38%), Administrative cost of 1.7 billion won (13.62%), and Risk cost of 7.5 billion won (61.01%).

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate parenting experiences among grandmothers raising their grandchildren from grandmothers' perspective, and a variety of their physical health, psychological and social challenges they were facing in everyday life. In addition, this study explored new issues, changes, and difficulties grandparents and their grandchildren were going through during the COVID-19 pandemic. Seven grandmothers raising their grandchildren without their cohabiting parents participated in an in-depth interview, and the qualitative date were obtained using semi-structured questionnaires. Analyses identified 5 main categories: 1) my emotion, worries, and coping with parenting grandchildren, 2) difficulties and obstacles facing in real life of the parenting, 3) conflicts and coping with growing grandchildren who showed new characters, 4) relationships and emotions among grandparents, parents, and grandchildren, and 5) needs and desires toward social services and support. Sixteen themes and 60 sub-themes were also derived. The majority of grandmothers expressed diverse difficulties in their dail y lives including ambivalent emotions regarding grandchild-rearing(rewards and burden), economic hardships, physical health limitations, and a lack of communications with their grandchildren. Further, findings indicated profound generation conflicts which had been even deepened during school close period in COVID-19 pandemic and had been associated with increased hours of using internet and playing computer games. The top priority of the social service needs among interviewed grandmothers was learning support for their grandchildren. Emotional support and social support to cover their lack of family interactions, and financial support were the next of their desired social services. Implications to improve social services for grandparent-headed families are discussed.
