  • A new improved inviscid separation model to calculate the mean flow past circular cylinders is proposed. The wake region is modeled by a pair of vortex sheets which emerge from the separation points and are allowed to move freely with the local stream. The vortex strength assumes a constant value for some initial distance which is related to the pressure drag and gradually decreases to zero as the sheet moves farther away from the body. This vorticity distribution automatically takes care of the length parameter which has been one of the deficiencies in the existing models. The procedure is tested against various experimental data and the agreement is quite good for both sub and super-critical regimes. The comparison with an existing model is also given.

  • To integrate the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations numerically in multiply-connected flow regions, the vorticity-stream function formulation is used. The steady stream function value at the surface of the multibody, initially unknown, has been determined interactively by introducing a line integral which requires the single-valuedness of pressure at each interaction step. This procedure is relatively simpler and more efficient than the primitive variable formulation which requires much more computing time and shows poor convergence. Three doubly-connected flow problems are defined and numerically analyzed by the present method. The results have been compared either with earlier existing ones or with the experimental interferograms to demon-strate the validity of the presented method.

  • This paper deals with the procedure for developing a computer program which can predict the pressure fluctuation on the ship hull by solving the boundary value problem on the hull subject to the influence of the unsteady propeller and cavity motions. The program is applied to the solution of flow around a sphere under the influence of point sources simulating the propeller cavity, and then is compared with the analytic solution based on Butler's sphere theorem. The effect of free surface condition, either pressure-free or rigid-wall, upon the pressure distribution is studied. The computer code is also applied to a RO-RO ship, leading to the conclusion that the package may be useful for the analysis of excitation forces on the ship hull induced by the propeller in the design process.

  • A family of variational principles governing the dynamics of laminated plate has been derived using a variationally consistent shear deformable discrete laminated plate theory with particular reference to finite element procedures. The theoretical basis for the derivation is Sandhu's generalized procedure for the variational formulation of linear coupled boundary value problem. As the bilinear mapping to write the operator matrix of the field equations in self-adjoint form, convolution product was employed. Boundary conditions, initial conditions and probable internal discontinuity were explicitly included in the governing functionals. Some interesting extensions and specializations of the general variational principle were presented, which can provide many different finite element formulations for the problem.

  • In this paper, Electromagnetic scattering problem by a perfectly conducting strip grating with 2 dielectric layer on a grounded plane by incidence of a electric wave is analyzed by applying the PMM (Point Matching Method) known as a simple procedure. The scattered electromagnetic fields are expanded in a series of Floquet mode functions. The boundary conditions are applied to obtain the unknown field coefficients and the conducting boundary condition is used for the relationship between the tangential electric field and the electric current density on the strip When the incident angle is normal incidence the minimum value of the geometrically normalized reflected power according as relative permittivity is increased it should be noted that the value of the strip width gets moved toward high value. Them most energy by a normal incident wave is scattered in direction of the other angles except normal incident angle.

  • Impact forces are acting on the fore part of a body entering water and those are function o the shape of the fore part and entrance angle. In this paper, impact forces are computed for the flat faced body with arbitrary entrance angle The geometric characteristics of the wetted surface of the body are complicated. The surface is divided into several smooth parts and each of them is represented by a bi-cubic B-spline. The free surface condition, $\phi=0$, is applied at the undisturbed free surface and he boundary value problem is analized by using Green's function.

  • The linear tracking theory has a great merit that its solution can be analytically obtained under the quadratic performance measure. However, this theory has not been applied to reservoir system operation yet, because the tracking assumes no boundness of the control and state vectors. This paper presents deriving the optimal control law and solving the Riccati equations for the discrete time horizon, and its application to the real system. And the additional necessary conditions for the saturated vectors of the control and/or state are also derived using the concept of the Pontryagin's minimum principle. The logic and its algorithm in this work are not so positive to give a general solution. In fact, it is a matter of modeling in terms of relative magnitude of disturbance and time-step size. However its application to the real environment of the Han river, which comprises six major reservoirs in series/parallel, demonstrated satisfactory results over 36 monthly stages.

  • To analyze the diffraction properties of optical signals by periodic blazed 2D diffraction gratings, Toeplitz dielectric tensor is first defined and formulated by 2D spatial Fourier expansions associated with asymmetric blazed grating profile. The characteristic modes in each layer is then based on eigenvalue problem, and the complete solution is found rigorously in terms of modal transmission-line theory (MTLT) to address the pertinent boundary-value problems. Toeplitz matrix of symmetric and sawtooth profiles is derived from that of asymmetric blazed grating profile, and the diffraction properties for each profile are numerically simulated. The numerical results reveal that the asymmetric and symmetric profiles behave as anti-reflection GMR filter while the sawtooth profile works better as anti-transmission one rather than anti-reflection filter.

  • A least-square regression analysis is applied for the estimation of velocity streamfunction field based on discretely sampled current meter data. The coefficients of a streamfuunction that is expanded in terms of trigonometric basis function are obtained by enforcing the horizontal non-divergence of two-dimensional flow field. This method avoids Interpolation and gives a root-mean-square (rms) residual of fit which Includes the divergent part and noisiness of oceanic data. The Implementation of the method Is done by employing a boundary-fitted, curvilinear orthogonal coordinate which facilitates the specification of boundary conditions. An application is successfully made to the Texas-Louisiana shelf using the 32 months current meter data (31 moorings) observed as a part of the Texas-Louisiana Shelf and Transport Processes Study (LATEX). The rms residual of the fitting is relatively small for the shelf, which indicates the field Is Ivell represented by the streamnfunction.
